thought process on this one is you definitely get what you pay for defensively. Sadly, aside from lucking out with an ELC on Faulk, we see exactly what this means. We actually have less then the given cap count to play with right now due to the Jokinen trade, though the most that can bring it up to is 58.9 and change, still room to sign some plugs.

Right now I'd expect to enter next season looking at this group:
Tlusty - E Staal - Semin
Skinner - J Staal - Ruutu
Bowman - Nash - Dwyer
????? - Welsh - Westgarth

Pitkanen -McBain
Harrison - Faulk
Gleason - Murphy

Ward
Peters

now what I would do here is try to shop McBain for a youngish forward, someone who can fill a bit of a grinding role on the 3rd line without being a black hole offensively. Someone like Klingberg from Winnipeg or Alex Chiasson from Dallas assuming we can get either. Defensively are where the biggest holes are that need plugged, despite having a complete 6 right now, possibly with a top pick in this draft if we go in that direction, I'm personally hoping that we do.

looking at this, Pitkanen might be a prime candidate to be moved some time next season, closer to the deadline, if only to make room to re-sign Faulk and Tlusty. But aside from MAYBE Ruutu, this is our forward core going forward, for at least another 2 years but probably well beyond that until Semin's a UFA.

Rask COULD if he really impresses in camp next season, and there's a couple of dmen that could get a sniff if they have a great camp (Levi, Lowe), but otherwise it's the same cast of characters that haven't managed to stick yet in their pro careers: Dalpe, Terry, Boychuk, etc.

Really hope they offer Dadonov a cheap one-way contract, might be able to pluck him from the KHL and he could be a nice skillset to add to this lineup.

I think we're going to see some interesting player movement this offseason. Some teams were willing to go crazy at the trade deadline, but 9 teams are now over next year's cap and several more are pushing it. So some of those rental contracts will come off the books and stay off the books.

What we'll probably see is a rolling-back of salary levels for the Jokinens of the world, middle-6 guys who might be getting bottom-6 offers, as well as the Gleasons of the world who will be getting about a mil less per year than they would have in 2012.

So, while Ruutu's contract puts us in a bit of a bind, I think we might be able to wiggle around and be OK. If he can find a way to stay healthy and be the serviceable 2nd-liner he's being paid to be, we're ok in our top-6. Our bottom-6 is going to be filled with deals in the range of about $1M (it's critical that LaRose takes a cut, BTW) and it seems likely to me that we sign a 7th defenseman for under $1M.

If all of that shakes out, and you factor in the portion of Jokinen's salary we ate, I think we end up around $1.5M to sign one last defenseman to complete the group. And really, it's likely that we get a decent defender for $1.5M considering the market rollback.

It might work out ok.

That's assuming JR doesn't do something stupid. And that's a real possibility.

Agreed, we've got our top 6 (Tlusty-Staal-Semin,Skinner-Staal-Ruutu), so we're looking at bottom 6 tweaks now. I'd say JR is looking at this as a 3 (possibly 5) year window to win the cup, after that, Staal, Ward, Ruutu, Gleason, and Harrison all come off the books, and there could be a good amount of roster turnover. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the time when JR steps aside, and lets the new guy (presumably Francis) build from there.

I'm not so sure about the Top 6 being set. I guess we'll (finally) get a look at Skinner/JStaal/Rutuu down the stretch.

That something stupid would be paying LaRose anything north of a million per, and that's the one thing I'm REALLY worried about heading into next season. LaRose making half of what he is now is a solid 3rd/4th line tweener (which he is in reality), anything more then that is too much.

I think we'll see some defensive tweaks this offseason. We're not going to go into the season yet again with 3 offensive dmen, 2 defensive dmen, and jack of all trades Justin Faulk. No matter how good Joni CAN play in his own zone when motivated, with Murphy coming onto the team they're going to look to move someone to make room for a more defense oriented guy, and that's probably going to be McBain. I can see someone like Dallas or Nashville having interest, sadly I think the team we could get the best out of in a trade like this (Philly) also can't afford it. Would love to see us go after Jamie McGinn for McBain but I doubt Colorado would bite.

Missing the playoffs this year will be the best thing that ever happened to this team.

It's clear that even with a ton of money committed that this team isn't good enough. There isn't really any money left over to fix any holes, so we need a high potential young player who can provide quality play for cheap, like Faulk and Tlusty do and Skinner did at one point before his brain got scrambled.

(Of course we'll only get three cheap years out of that player before Rutherford pays a UFA price for him because he can't negotiate, but for those three years it would be a huge positive.)

Another 1-8-1 stretch needs to happen.

I count 10 forwards and 6 defensemen already signed for next season. So even if th $57+ million is entirely accurate, we really only need to add two bottom sixers to the list, and they'll still have plenty of wiggle room for call ups or trades.

Not sure where some of the panicking about the cap is coming from?

Yes, but that includes Ryan Murphy, Kevin Westgarth and Jeremy Welsh. Three players who should absolutely not be penciled into a full-time roster spot BEFORE we hit injuries. And that also has us continuing to roll along with Justin Peters on the roster.

God help us if the plan is to just sign two more players and call it an offseason.

Not sure where some of the panicking about the cap is coming from?

What panic?

This. That's why you build through the draft, you can control the contracts and keep the cap hit at a manageable level until players are 25. I don't know who's to blame, maybe Kevin Lowe with the Penner offersheet started it, but the disappearance of the second contract is starting to kill this. Hell, even Ward and Staal got second contracts before we overpaid them. Now we're buying out UFA years for a 20 year old Skinner, paying twice as much as we should. Like you said, now we only get 3 years of cheap ELC before we have to pay over 5 million for good, young players. Funny how Montreal can do this with PK Subban, but we can't with Skinner. Can't wait to see how much we throw at Faulk next year...

Nothing special, pretty meh. But Ruutu at third line with Nash and another good two-way scoring winger, at least, give us some good scoring touch as a secondary offense. I know everyone dream of Seth Jones but we could fine pretty good playmaking winger if we draft Drouin/ Barkov/ for example.

They really have to trade Luongo during the offseason. This is getting into ridiculous, Rick Nash territory.

No wonder why Toronto turned down Scrivens and two seconds. Some team is going to basically get Lu for free.

I wonder how Pauser will feel about that....

Also, if we wanted, we could retool our defense this offseason. Target a guy like Aaron Rome, Andrew Ference or Mark Fayne.
