I think that a cap is what the league needs to save itself.
However, I would be open to discussing cap alternatives with the union if I were Bettman, as long as these alternatives acheive the same benefits of a cap.
In the shower, I started thinking about what these could be, and I came up with 2 ideas.
There is no salary cap, but teams are rewarded for keeping payrolls under a certain number. Teams over this number can do so, but lose certain rights.
For example...Teams under the number get to participate in a very profitable revenue sharing program. Teams over the number must still contribute but cannot get any money from it. I was thinking of this so that players have some motivation to keep their salaries in check.
Second, and more interesting, is that all teams over the number cannot participate in that season's draft. No draft picks at all, you lose them.
