One good thing is that no country looks like it has a strong 2017 draft, just like the 2016 draft. Canada's talent edge will not be great in 2018, but no country is going to look that great.

That to me looks like the selection camp roster to last year's Ivan Hlinka tournament. The vast majority of those players will be unavailable due to CHL playoffs. Or maybe it is a different roster. I'll pay a visit to HC website. I checked. It's last summer's Hlinka selection camp roster.
oh, and BTW, the Ivan Hlinka team didn't perform too well finishing 5th. So, I wouldn't be expecting miracles here at this upcoming tournament. Just competing for a Bronze medal is all Hockey Canada aims for here at this tournament. So, 3rd.,4th., or 5th unless they really overachieve and through great coaching, hard work and a lot of luck manage to work themselves into a gold medal game.
I usually do a roster for the U18 spring tournament, but just no interest in it this year.

Colorado signed Jost and is going to have him play with them this year, so he is not returning to university. Only options next year are NHL or AHL.

I'll get around to watching that clip later this morning...so not sure if it's mentioned or not...
but I wouldn't be surprised if Hockey Canada takes him to Europe for camp + pre-tourney game to see how fares. I like the player, but there are some at HC who dip into the Jost juice a little too much.

you know you can create your own "Team Canada U18 roster" to get the ball rolling.
I'm waiting for a few other series to finish up this weekend before posting a possible roster. currently I think I have half a roster of players that may be available as of right now.

Seems that I was wrong about AHL and NHL being Jost's only options next year. Anaheim can also assign him to Regina in the WHL. If that happens, a combination with Steel becomes very enticing, even though I would have to think that Regina mostly keeps them apart.

by the way, jost is a center...if colorado picks that center first over all...Patrick..that means Jost might not make colorado next year? or will he?

Jost can also play the left side as Patrick can play RW.
if both make the Avs next year, a mistake in my opinion, but if both are in the NHL next year, starting on the wing would be the smarter play.

Considering how slow they have been to put MacKinnon at centre despite him being a successful centre in junior, which I agree with since he very clearly plays like a winger and has a skillset better for a winger, I would expect Colorado to keep Jost on the wing at first.

Michael McLeod looking real good in the OHL playoffs right now. Clearly worked on his goalscoring, though I remember him potting 2 at the last WJC's with limited minutes.
Should be a top 2 C for us this year.

Girard has joined the Milwaukee Admirals for the AHL playoffs. It probably has no bearing on where he plays next year, but it is an interesting move.
This is the next tournament coming up other than the Hlinka. What are we looking at next year? It's obviously weaker than previous years, but that is basically the same thing for every other country, so it kind of cancels out. Steel and McLeod really stepped up big this year for their CHL teams. Howden had a good year. Jost and Dubois are probably in the NHL. I'll spit out a rough potential roster for next year.

it would be a shame to lose Girard if he manages to stick with the big club. I can't see it happening, but who knows these days.
one of the positives of a weak draft year for Canadian players is that few junior age players will be unavailable. I have the count so far at 3, (Dubois Patrick Jost) and one can argue that 1, 2 or maybe even all 3 could very well be available come December 1 when the invites go out. And how often in the past 10-12 years has a Team Canada WJ team gone into a tournament with only 1 or 2 players missing due to NHL commitments or NHL GM stupidity? Normally, I'd be happy with those kind of numbers, but I have to say, I think I'd prefer 7-9 Canadian teenagers vying for NHL roster spots.

Regarding Girard and the AHL, I don't think he is destined for the NHL next year, but it was an interesting move. I am also interested in Jost (NHL or WHL) and even Detroit prospect Dennis Cholowski, who left university and played a game in the AHL. I don't think that Cholowski is a huge prospect for this team, but it's possible. Brett Howden and Givani Smith also played AHL games this year after their junior seasons were over.
Regarding NHL guys, we know that Chychrun won't be available. I would guess that Patrick (potential #1 pick, good size, 19 years old) could stick, probably Dubois for similar reasons. It does sound like Jost will be given every chance to stick, though that might be a mistake given the Colorado situation. Among the 2018 draftees outside of Patrick it's difficult to project. This does look like a lean year for Canadian teenagers in the NHL. A far cry from the 2007-2012 era.
One other thing that I've noticed, and it isn't significant for 2018 but it is for 2019, is that strangely the top Canadian defencemen projected for this draft are all 1998s. Makar, Timmins, Foote, Hague. That's pretty uncommon.

why would the 98s be significant for the 2019 team? you mean very few returnees for the 2019 team?
I think at least 1 99 defenseman makes the 2018 team. not sure who that will be. none were really that impressive at either last summer's Hlinka or this spring's U18 tournament. The spot may go 2000 birth year. Bouchard a 99 or McIsaac - a double underager. unlikely to happen.

Yes, I meant that it's a problem that the 99 born defencemen seem very weak. It isn't a problem for this year because there is good depth among the 1998s. As for 2000 defencemen the only one I thought of is Merkley, but I am not all that well informed on him or any guys that young.

You forgot Gauthier- Choloswki might be available if he's in AHL if they are correct in age.

Choloswki is a wild card. He could get a spot, but hasn't been on the radar recently. Gauthier is a '97 he is too old.

Has he ever been on Hockey Canada's radar? I don't think he's ever participated in U17 or U18. He wasn't even on the summer camp roster for the Hlinka tournament. the one where they bring in practically everybody.
I don't know the player. I've never once seen him play, so who knows. I certainly would like if Hockey Canada cast a wide net and scoop up some NCAA talent. We sure could have used Parayko in Ufa, Russia in 2013. Hockey Canada has ignored a lot of players that opted NCAA over CHL to its own detriment on more than one occasion.
I'm not holding my breath for the bureaucrats at Hockey Canada to change their tactics anytime soon.

Cholowski was picked as a big of a project by Detroit. He has good puck skills but needs to improve physically (size and skating) and defensively. As for the NCAA, Hockey Canada doesn't tend to ignore NCAA players when they are highly touted. They don't dig out diamonds in the rough as they might in the CHL, but that isn't shocking. Off the top of my head in the last ten years we've seen we've seen Toews, Leblanc (woof), Schwartz, Olsen (woof), Hickey, Fabbro, Jost. There aren't many high NCAA picks who don't make the team or at least get serious consideration.

I don't know if it's just me being uninformed in regards to lof of these players as of now but to me, this potential roster for Team Canada looks really mediocre for Canada's standards, doesn't it?
