There is no silver lining to this, but he did get to go doing something he loved. RIP, Butch

From reading the various statements on the WCHA's website, there's no question he loved what he did and made the game more enjoyable with his admirable personality. He will no doubt be missed and well-remembered among every league he worked for.

This is heartbreaking..such a freak accident

.refs are just as big apart of the global hockey family as players, coaches , staff and fans....such a loss is a crucial reminder that we must remember to appreciate them more, and a even more terrible reminders of the danger of head injuries....

my thoughts are with his family and friends in this terrible time.. hope the ncaa and the rest of the hockey world will give him a fitting tribute. He also reffed at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in 2007 and the 2006 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group B.

i didnt have the pleasure to meet this man but you can tell from the mic'ed up video, that we not only lost a great referee but also an amazing man.
