Protecting a 3 goal lead with 30 seconds to go is garbage minutes. That line wasn't protecting anything other than their more important teammates from suffering a needles injury in a game that has been decided.

Pyatt wasn't soft by any means....just too small and weak to inflict any punishment. It is a moot point in the end as any team that has either Pyatt or Dumont in their lineup have no chance of winning a cup.

I always laugh at statements like these. Teams have won cups with equivalent or worse players before, you could replace one of the worst players on any recent cup winners with Dumont and they would likely win anyways. Besides we don't know yet what Dumont can do at the NHL level so its unfair to judge him too fast, especially since he's exceeded expectations so far.

Pyatt was still a good defensive forward, if Dumont is anything like him with a little more offense and a lot more grit then he should be a decent 4th liner.

The point that I was trying to make is generally if one of these players is a regular in your lineup then you are in trouble. It is hard to say that Dumont is better than players who were regulars on a Cup winning team when he has yet to even make the NHL. IMO Dumont is going to be primarily a career AHLer.

What makes me laugh is when a grinder like Dumont has a big game in the AHL this board is flooded with over exuberant posts about his potential. I love his work ethic and attitude but he doesn't have the size/skill/speed to be a quality NHLer.

Max Talbot and Steve Bégin are both bottom six players under 6 foot I'd go to war with (Bégin in his prime)... Pyatt was as soft and weak as Palushaj ! + he had no IQ, although he was good on the PK, thanks to Gill.

As for Pyatt, he went to the dirty areas and took his lumps. Soft players stay away from these areas. Just because a player doesn't throw many bodychecks doesn't make him soft. If Dumont could skate like Pyatt then this would be a very different conversation but alas.......he can't.

As of Pyatt, he always lost puck battles. If he had Dumont's tenacity and courage... and skills.

The main thing is that Dumont isn't a chicken head like Pyatt is. Pyatt never had the toolbox Dumont has.

Dumont is listed at 5'10, 186. Talbot as 5'11, 185. Dumont is 6 years younger... Let's see what happens next training camp. Dumont isn't any slower than Leblanc... 2013-2014 will be his year.

PS, Pyatt sucks, and always will be a fringe warm body with no brains.

Pyatt was DEFINITELY not soft, just not very strong physically despite being 6'. He would get run over but still go back, that's the opposite of soft. He was also a very smart player, just didn't have great hands.

Dumont has a way to go before we can compare him to Pyatt. Pyatt is already an experienced nhler who's improved every year. He gets tough assignments as a defensive specialist and scored 12 goals last season. Right now Pyatt is the better player until Dumont can show that he can do the same.
