Aqueduct (New York):
  • Closing Day of the 16-event Meet: Onto.... Aqueduct or the revamped Belmont at Big A meet.
    • Aqueduct's "Belmont at Big A" Spring/Summer Meet runs May 2 - July 7 but will be closed May 28 - June 13.
    • There will be no racing at any NYRA track (Aqueduct, Saratoga or Belmont) from May 28 - June 5.
    • Saratoga's 4-Day Belmont Meet runs June 6 - June 9.
    • NYRA tracks will be dark June 10 - June 13, the latter date when Aqueduct re-opens.
    • Saratoga opens its annual Summer Meet July 11.
    • Belmont is currently undergoing a massive construction project and will not race in 2024.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick paid $34. That is as low as I recall.
  • Races 6 through 8: Tyler Gaffalione and Flavien Prat, who excel elsewhere throughout America but ride infrequently at Aqueduct, were the winning riders.
  • Race 6: Sweet Rebecca (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) won the feature race. Gaffalione had just one other mount this meet.

  • Races 7 and 8: Flavien Prat was the winning rider both times, a rare time for him as well at Aqueduct. He was 3-for-7 at this meet.
  • Leading jockey: Manny Franco with 28 wins. It was the 11th riding title for Franco at a NYRA meet.
  • Leading Trainer: Linda Rice with 18 wins. Rice celebrated her 15th training title at a NYRA meeting and her seventh of the past eight NYRA meets,
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 2: Dollar Liberty (Cipriano Gil/Nader Moubarak) won at 42-to-1, the rider picking up the mount earlier in the day. Gil began riding in the US last year and never away from Gulfstream. Moubarak is also in his second year in the US.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid an enormous $122,000+.
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid a gigantic $90,000.
Woodbine (ON):
  • Sahin Civaci rode three winners for the second straight day.
Monday, April 29, 2024

Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Opening Day: Closing day is November 27. Finger Lakes, not part of the three-track NYRA circuit in New York, usually runs early in the week.

Much is made about post positions in Kentucky Derby history but some of that data is misleading. There are higher numbers that have not been established as much as inside posts. Sierra Leone (2) and Fierceness (17) are vying for race-time favorite status yet are in historically bad posts.
  • Number 1: Ferdinand in 1986 will be mentioned as the most recent #1 winner.
  • Number 2: Often overlooked is the #2 has not produced a winner since Affirmed -- arguably the greatest Florida-bred of them all -- in 1978.
  • Number 5: The winningest post with 10 wins.
  • Number 6: The abysmal plight of #6 (2 wins in 94 starts).
  • Number 9: 4 wins in 90 starts has been dormant from the winner's circle since Riva Ridge in 1972.
  • Number 17: This year's favorite is entering from the #17 which is the only number not to win (44 starts) from 1 through 20.

Turf Paradise (AZ) starts today's card with a Pick 6 carryover of $631,010. The track races on Saturday as well, maybe they will get a boost from Derby bettors.

Breaking:

scratch the 9 Encino; add the 21 Epic Ride(who now loads as the 20); 17-Stronghold now takes that post and 16-Fierceness can now be betted on as well due to the scratch; Fierceness retains the 17 silks but will load into post 16

$11.5 million bet today at Churchill. I will guess somewhere around $350 million wagered Friday and Saturday combined. Under the lights tomorrow (Thursday).
