I'd be interested to know what you make of On the Road and Zadie Smith. I've never read the latter.

I think so. Almost everyone seems to like White Teeth and I really enjoyed NW. How did you like her short fiction?

Definitely enjoyed. As a general rule, though, I tend to prefer short stories to novels.

Many thanks to all recommendations in this thread. I read " The lost city of the monkey god" last week and it was fun read. I picked up black flags and third into the book.

Black Flags is excellent. It's being turned into an HBO mini series with Bradley Cooper.

Am reading John Irving's Avenue of Mysteries, but I think I will give up on it. It gets off to a good start with some intersting characters and then it's like the author loses interest in the plot/story. Irving has a (very) few duds, and this is one of them.
