After a disappointing conference final lost, the President’s Trophy winning Blues are once again settling in for an off-season of discontent.

After taking game 1 of the conference finals in OT, the Blues lost home ice following a disappointing game 2 loss where they out shot the Kings handily. But from that point forward, the Kings took control of the series, finally closing it out with a decisive game 5 win where they were clearly the better team.

The Blues now being their off-season with some major questions regarding expansion draft and the cap. While the protected list of the team is far from final, it is anticipated some key veterans may be exposed in the expansion draft, along with their hefty contracts.

The Blues are currently in trade discussions around a few players, and a few notable names who are currently available via trade given salary cap and expansion draft ramificaitons:

Nikita Zaitsev – the young rear guard just signed a long-term contract with the Leafs after a stellar rookie season and seems destined to produce an even better clip than the 36 points he registered this season. He is plays in all situations and has been a hot commodity in trade discussions. Zaitsev does NOT have to be protected in the expansion draft, making him an even more valuable player for a team looking to lock down their top 4.

Anthony Duclair – the young winger had a disappointing sophomore season, but remains a young talented goal scorer, who at 21, already has a 20 goal season under his belt. He’ll be a key winger for the NHL ‘Yotes moving forward, surrounding by a talented cast of play makers.

Andrew Shaw – a gritty two-way forward with salary certainty given auto-sign. 35 point pace last season makes him a strong top 6 roll player, or a key checking line forward. Can play all forward positions.

Shaw could be had a for a pick or futures.

Duclair and Zaitsev, along with the 25th overall pick, have been involved in discussions around a young NHL forward.

Congratulations on a great run, Nick. Your team was built in a way that could have easily pushed you into the SC finals.
