The Binghamton Senators were locally-owned from their inception in 2002 until they were sold to Ottawa earlier this year.

With Ottawa wanting to move the team north of the border, I'm sure they paid a premium to obtain the franchise. No idea why the local group wanted to sell, but I have a feeling they saw the successful model that was being used in Utica, and thought it made sense for them here as well. NJ really wanted to be here, and didn't seem inclined to sell their franchise, so it works for both parties.

Direct flights from Binghamton to Vegas? Hahahahahahahahaha, that's a good one. The only direct flights from Binghamton are to Detroit. Its a regional airport, with only Delta operating currently.

Well I would be cautious saying NJ really wanted to be there, all that sounds well. If Buffalo found a better model then their set up in Rochester they to would be elsewhere. The Devils are there because Tom Mitchell and his group assume all financial risk. The coach of the team is not even locating to Binghamton, instead opting to remain in an Albany suburb for family reasons. Wanting to be here makes good PR, it's a feel good statement.

Keep your denial going if you wish, but the fact that NJ wanted to be here isn't a feel-good PR statement. Albany could very well have been without a team the previous season, if NJ had their way. I'm sure NJ not having a financial risk is a big incentive for them to be here, so why would you say they wouldn't want to be here? Kinda contradictory.

What does the coach not uprooting his family have to do with anything regarding NJ wanting to be here or not? Its only a two hour drive back and forth. I probably wouldn't move my family either, if they were established in schools, neighborhoods, sports, etc.

Denial is the false belief that any Podunk town like Binghamton, Smallbany, Utica, Worcester, Springfield, Adirondack, and like cities are places NHL teams can't do without. Binghamton just was in such a position they had little choice but to make a no risk offer to NJ . Hey that's ok, they did what they had to do, that's business....its ok lol, it is what it is.

You do realize that two of the local guys also have bought a share of the Devils AHL franchise. Also realize that we were so close to having two aHL teams here in Binghamton last year. Mitchell didn't want the drama but the Devils tried like hell to get here. This is fact as I am on the local arena board and we just could not pull it off.

"Mmazz#22":

What % did they purchase "Mojo" IF you can say?????

Well IF New Jersey did come to Binghamton last season Ottawa would of moved the Sens to Cornwall and played some games @ CTC...... With the manure team they stuck KK with it would not of been any great loss for Binghamton~~!!!!!

Although 2 AHL teams in Binghamton would have been interesting?????

I've actually heard that same rumor here in Utica that NJ wanted to move the AHL Devils to Binghamton this past season before the Senators moved out. I have a hard time believing how that could even happen but that is something that I heard.

"Utica Hockey":

I do NOT think the AHL would of allowed it...... That would have annoyed Melnyk he would of had a fit just like #45 here does!!!!!!!!

Come to think of it this AHL beer league allows the West teams to play less games So Hell they could of allowed it~~~!!!!!!!

Yea no way it would have worked but would have been wild! Nj was even willing to pony up some cash to make arena capable of housing two teams

Stop please, just stop while you think your ahead lol. NJ was willing to spend money just to share the same outdated arena with another AHL squad. Binghamton you said doesn't even have a workable airport, and the population to even sell out AHL hockey let alone the Rumble Ponies AA ball club. Yet when the Rangers wanted the Devils three years ago to voluntarily relocate from Albany elsewhere so the Rangers could locate to Albany the Devils put the kabosh to the plan. Dont get me wrong, I hope the Devils work in Binghamton for the sake of its fans but lets be quite honest, the AHL hasn't been a routine sell out in Binghamton in many a years so there was no room for two AHL teams, wasn't even a thought unless the Devils organization is just that stupid. The AHL cities who host nearby D1 college teams all have to adjust their business plans if they want to survive given the market share squeeze. Let's be realistic here....

It wasn't that the Devils wanted to split the arena - they have wanted to come in but were willing to wait for the Sens to leave. There had been talks previously, but the Devils weren't going to move in to an occupied city. When the Sens made their plans known, though, NJ was the first phone call.

Mazz is right on with his post. NJ wanted to split the Binghamton arena last season. No way in hell it would have worked, but they definitely wanted to.

Hoping they sign a few good vets this month.
They could use the experience to show the prized prospects the way.

Hoping for the same. The first year of the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa brought in some quality vets to go with the young kids (Spezza, Vermette, Emery, etc.), and the team was good and fun to watch.

For the NHLDevils sake, hopefully it doesn't happen, but there may be a chance of Zacha spending some time in the AHL next season.

Regardless, there should be a steady flow of young talent (especially offensively) in Binghamton for the next few years at least.

Not to change subjects, but has anyone close to the Devils heard of the possibility that former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds' defenceman Colton White being returned for his overage year with the Greyhounds this year? This rumour has been floating around Sault Ste.Marie in the recent past.

Haven't been any rumors that filtered to the level of the HFBoards Devils hockey community. Wouldn't surprise me either way. There's a lot of depth for the AHL Devils at defense at the moment, so it might make the most sense for his development.

I find it interesting that Binghamton has only eight D on their roster when in the past, even as recently as last season, Albany has carried 9 or 10 D. This practice helps for three-in-threes when fresh legs are needed for those back to back to backs. This season Binghamton doesn't play their first 3-in-3 until mid-February. They have three 3-in-3s in March and finish the regular season with two 3-in-3s in April.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Binghamton expand their roster when their schedule becomes more compacted in the second half of the season. Colby Sissons is the only junior D in the organization expected to be available when Swift Current's season ends, and with their dominant start, the Broncos could go deep in the playoffs.

This is also the first season NJ has had an "official" ECHL affiliate since I think the Trenton Devils in 2010-11, so there may be less urgency to have extra players on the current AHL roster since they have a larger pool of players to draw from in Adirondack instead of just a few assigned players when they were sharing ECHL affiliates with other teams as the "unofficial" ECHL affiliate as Tampa Bay is with the Thunder this season.

However, Binghamton can draw players from the entire ECHL on an "on loan" basis as PTOS as long as they are on ECHL contracts. Albany did this last season with D Jacob MacDonald, D Justin Agosta, and F Tylor Spink from Toledo. MacDonald earned a two-year AHL contract midseason from that tryout. So the "official" affiliation may be less of a factor in the decision to start the season with only 8 D.

Yaroslav Dyblenko was listed as injured for the last Binghamton game bringing them down to 7 available D. They don't play again until Friday so he may be healthy by then. Tim Erixon is still on a PTO so technically they only have six contracted healthy D at the moment.

Edit: I could see NJ leaving room for Will Butcher if they thought he wasn't ready for the NHL or if he drops off significantly after his record breaking start. Also if Steven Santini starts getting scratched more frequently and they would rather have him getting more ice time. Mirco Mueller could also sink to a level that he would be safe to waive which would be a shame considering the picks that were given up for him. I doubt any of those three D are sent down though.

Little unrelated but somewhat Albany and NJ Devils related lol but looks like some of the Devils organization along with investors from down here in PA and some from Albany area are bringing arena football back to Albany. That's sends a message that the area might not be interested in bringing hockey back anytime soon, instead opting to give Adirondack breathing room for the ECHL, excellent move for that region since Albany and Adirondack are too close to each other. Its funny though that the Devils organization ownership is involved and may also bring an AFL team to Newark.

In before this tangent gets deleted for being completely off-topic...

Where on earth are you getting the idea that the Devils' ownership are involved in the Albany AFL franchise? Yes, it has been reported that Newark may also get an AFL team and it makes sense that the Devils would be involved in that, but Albany's ownership group is a combination of locals and the Soul's owners. Nothing to do with the Devils. And since the AFL's season runs from April to August, it wouldn't interfere too badly with a hockey team. (With the exception of Baltimore, all the other AFL teams play in NHL or AHL arenas.)
