So when you buy The Hockey News and see a guest editorial from someone like me, you know that the news of the business has overwhelmed the news of the sportÅ and that's a shame.

In an ideal hockey world, this collective bargaining negotiation would have been completed long ago. In an ideal hockey world, this negotiation would have been conducted far from the spotlight, by people whose names you never needed to know. Ideally, this space would be devoted to the excitement of training camp, the anticipation of the 2004-05 season, the potential impact of new rules.

It looks like THN will have alot of space to fill this year. Hopefully more coverage of all NHL feeder leagues and prospects.

Saskin, Daly, Goodenow, and Bettman only represent the wishes of the players/owners. If the latter had different agendas (like not wanting a salary cap in the owners' case) or caved in, these negotiators would have hammered out a new CBA by now. So, its not their fault a lockout has taken place imo.

However, I'm sick of their rhetoric. Save us the lying and get back to the negotiating table until an agreement can be reached. These lawyers should be creative enough to give the owners the control they want over player salaries while maintaining a market-like system for the players.

In the end, I think a new CBA will be established quickly in 2006. Both sides have too much to risk worth losing. On one hand, the owners could suddenly see the de-stabilization of the league if the lockout lasts long enough. As much as six teams could move/contract thus jeopardizing the health of the league. The players, on the other hand, will sure miss their daily NHL income during the dog days of the lockout. Suddenly, an average salary of 1.3 mill could seem very appealing (just as Viagra is to men who can now reclaim some of their prowess of past years).

One day there is a mix up and an engineer dies and is sent to hell. He asks the Devil if he can fix up a few things, Devil isn't paying attention and lets him go. He harnesses the fires of hell and gets a generator going, runs powerlines, installs aircondition, plumbs running water, and a bunch of other tasks. Sudddenly hell isn't looking to bad, even the Devil is loosing up and enjoying it.

God calls up the Devil to find out what is going on.

g: "Hang on, hang on, you aren't supposed to get any engineers..."
d: "Well I'm not just going to give him back. Ha!"
g: "Well then I'm going to sue to get him back."
d: "And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?!?"
