Biggest Dinosaur Ever Discovered - 130ft long, 65ft tall, 75 tons

A film crew from the BBC Natural History Unit was there to capture the moment the scientists realised exactly how big their discovery was.

By measuring the length and circumference of the largest femur (thigh bone), they calculated the animal weighed 77 tonnes.

"Given the size of these bones, which surpass any of the previously known giant animals, the new dinosaur is the largest animal known that walked on Earth," the researchers told BBC News.

"Its length, from its head to the tip of its tail, was 40m.

"Standing with its neck up, it was about 20m high - equal to a seven-storey building."

Finally named:

A report published Wednesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. calls it Patagotitan mayorum. “Patagotitan” can be interpreted as “giant from Patagonia,” and “mayorum” is a tribute to the rancher family that hosted a team of paleontologists, geologists, students and volunteers as they excavated dozens of fossils from the area.

Physically, something this big shouldn't be able to exist on land. Whales get supported by the buoyancy of salt water, but the sheer physics involved in an organism this size are mind-melting. Surely this has to be the size ceiling of a terrestrial animal.

Although 77 tonnes is relatively light for something that long. Compare with a blue whale which is 10 meters SHORTER but nearly twice as heavy.

Well from the skeleton it doesn't look that bulky. It's got a really really long neck. I wish there was a rendering somewhere of what it may have looked like.
