If you go to visit any type of dogs you will get a feel for them and just know. I know the research with puppies is that they’ll pick who they want to be with just by how they act around you. Not sure that translates to older dogs though.

I just went to “look” at some pug puppies with a friend at a house in Surrey. They had two fawn and two black ones. 3 of them were pretty shy but one of the black ones was all over me. I left called my boss for an advance he said no worries. Went to the bank and used my rent money to buy a pug and he came home with me that night. I hadn’t even got permanent residency yet but I had to have him.

It's tough finding a good shelter here in Vancouver. There was this one place that had this adorable little dog, but then I read reviews on google, 25 reviews, all horrifying statements of being a puppy mill and they run as a shelter.

Disgusting.

I’ll ask my friend. She’s a vet tech. She’s in Victoria but is quite knowledgeable.

**** puppy mills. If I ever won the lotto I think I’d by some land and turn it into a dog rescue. Probably a pug rescue to start lol.

May the burn in hell for even THINKING that.

We met Leslie Nielsen in the lobby of a hotel in Hilton Head many years ago. I think he was there for a celebrity golf tournament. Guy was really cool.

Best part: He had a whoopie cushion and was using it. Here we are, in this fancy hotel in a crowded lobby, and he kept slipping it on chairs before people sat down.

EDIT: One thing some people don't realize is he actually was a straight dramatic actor for YEARS until Airplane. That's part of what made it so brilliant, him and guys like Robert Stack playing all the punchlines straight.

Police Squad!

That show is still funny as hell today.

How about John Carpenter's The Thing? It's one of my favourite horror films.

Not bad.

You know, I actually was thinking about this. How many remakes are there where you can say 'yeah, this was really good' instead of WTF when you think about the original?

I thought for 5 minutes, and the only one I had was Ocean's Eleven.

There have to be others, of course, but they're not readily coming to mind.

Puppy mills are awful. My wife and I got a rescued mix (husky, bernese and some other unknown working breed) a few years ago (I actually got him for her as a Christmas gift after she had to put her old dog down) and it's feels great seeing the changes in this dog. He was essentially a stray living on a reserve in northern Ontario. He had patches of fur missing, was very very shy and timid but we fell in love with him. He's much healthier now, has gotten much more confidence and is basically a new dog. Very rewarding giving an animal a second chance at life as opposed to supporting a puppy mill that just uses dogs as a way to make money and through poor breeding practices churns out dogs with lots of health issues.

Rescue dogs know they've been rescued.

My Aussie/Rottie mix I've been talking about, she actually was discovered under our car about 8 years ago by our old Frenchie. She started barking and dragged her out by the neck. She was 5 pounds. You could feel her bones. We didn't plan to keep her because our old Frenchie, Coco, was an ornery ***** (most lovable Frenchie you'd see with us, but didn't play well with other puppies or people). Took her to a local vet next day. They guessed the age. Got her shots and started on worm treatment because of the puppy worms. We found a home for her with a girl who had a year old lab. She weighed 8 pounds when she left. We went on a two week vacation and came back, called the girl to see that she was well, and this girls did a 'my apartment won't let me keep her' routine. Basically, I called it 'I forgot what it was like to have a puppy pee on my carpet'. She came back weighing 11 pounds and was almost the same size as our Frenchie, so it was a fair 'fight'.

As sweet a disposition as I've seen in a dog, and when our Frenchie passed, she did more than anything to help us grieve. Would've been 10 times rougher without her. She's given us every bit as much as I hope we've given her.

Okay, I'm feeling mushy . . . here's a pic of her when we lived in a Brisbane suburb . . .

Yeah dogs are great for that. They are really good at recognising human emotion (this is backed by scientific studies) and they try to help being family and all.

I woke up from a coma and the first thing I asked was where are my dogs are they ok. My Mum was at the hospital and she said they were fine. I wouldn’t believe her (or calm down lol) so she brought them to the hospital. Even though I felt like crap it was one of the happiest days.

The 2011 remake? That one was just garbage. Proof that technology and special effects doesn't fix horrible acting. The 1982 version is far superior.

I have never seen - The Thing from Another World, of which The Thing is based off of (from the novel that The Thing from Another World was based off of). But yeah I guess in that case, the remake of that (or rather a better adaptation) is the exception for sure.

I think he meant the 1982 version being a 'remake' of The Thing from Another World.

I think 2 weeks. I couldn’t breathe on my own so I think they got me awake to see if I could breath because you can only have the breathing tube through your mouth for a limited time. Then they cut the throat open. On the last day before they were going to do that I started breathing on my own. Phew!

They wouldn’t let me go home for another week. Didn’t stop me asking everyday “can I go home”

Lost 30+ pounds on the IV diet

Awwww. Mine is a little under 60lb and targets men's bits if ignored by them, too.

Madison, the one from the pic above, weighs about the same (when we did the Australia move, she weight about 54 pounds and dropped as low as 41 pounds in two weeks). Best I figured, she probably didn't eat for 3 days between being picked up in LA on a Monday US time and getting to quarantine in Australia on Friday their time. By Sunday morning, their people acted . . . one rubbed her belly while the other hand fed her. She was still barely eating when we were allowed to first see her on Tuesday, but she ate for us. By the Thursday, she was eating normally, but that was like 9 days that led to the weight loss. Obviously, as noted, she gained it back. BTW, here's a puppy pic of the Frenchie (she's hit the terrible 2 now):

upload_2017-12-15_18-24-48.png

Kind of what our previous one looked like. I had no intention of using a breeder, however reputable, but we went to Australia after our old Frenchie passed, and a few years later, after we'd returned to the US, my wife started to miss her a little. So this was her birthday present.

Aside from the minor inconvenience, IV diets are the best . . . did one once myself when they thought my appendix was about to burst (thankfully, the elevated white cell count was for another more innocuous reason).

I could use one right now  (without the injury of course). Although there has been a bit of Keto talk on here lately seems to work for some so might give it a try.

I meant the 1982 version is better than the 50's version. Certainly the new one wasn't good.

That’s so sad. It took them 3 days to damn well act?

The little tyrant would probably handle being removed from me like a champ. As long as there’s attention and comfort. She was a bit difficult about eating after moving but still did it and I think was mostly bothered about the direction she was facing... she’s a weirdo. I don’t think she’s ever missed a meal. She’s from a breeder who wanted to put her down but was dying and couldn’t fight with the owners of the parents.

Remarks aren't exactly new, and there are some classics that are remakes themselves. The Wizard of Oz . The Man Who Knew too Much. Ben-Hur. Scarface. The Maltese Falcon. Cape Fear. Speilberg's War of the Worlds. Scent of a Woman. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Then some other good movies that may not quite be classics like The Departed, Casino Royale, The Birdcage, Heat, True Grit.
