What are the best late round drafts of the past? Players that come to my mind, are at least

Demitra, 227th, by Ottawa
Datsyuk, 171st, by Detroit
Zetterberg, 210th, by Detroit

Of course you could see it a different way. For example, Jari Kurri was a great steal, being drafted 69th overall, but that isn't really that late. But then again, he did put up amazing performance in the league. :handclap:

Patrick Roy was a third round pick back in '84. That was a steal

Here's some fairly recent Bruins picks-

Hall Gill- 207 overall 1993
PJ Axelsson- 177 overall 1995
Andrew Raycroft- 135 overall 1998

And here are some other late round steals:

Pavel Kubina- 179 overall 1996
Tomas Kaberle- 204 overall 1996
Ladislav Nagy- 177 overall 1997
Daniel Alfredsson- 133 overall 1994
Steve Sullivan- 233 overall 1994

Also in 1994, there were several good goalies taken pretty late-

Marty Turco- 124 overall
Johan Hedberg- 218 overall
Evgeni Nabokov- 219 overall
Tomas Vokoun- 226 overall
John Grahame- 229 overall

Another good question would be the best players who were never drafted.

Curtis Joseph, Ed Belfour, Mike Keane are a few to come to mind.

Was Martin St. Louis ever drafted?

Nope..

Tomas Holmstrom was selected in the 10th round in '94, at 257th overall. Detroit's pretty good at drafting no name players very late and seeing them become pretty big. Unfortunately we don't have the same success with our early round picks :p.

I still don't get why Nagy went that late in his draft year.

Hes undersized...and he was in Slovakia so he didnt get the same attention. Same reasons why Zetterberg and Datsuyk dropped. Guys that are borderline small, 5'11 and 5'10

no year is better than 94 for late rounders. vokoun, nabokov, grahame, turco, sullivan, zednik. yowzerz.
Dick Tarnstrom, 11th Round 272nd overall '94.
Tomas Homstrom, 257th overall in '94

Luc Robitaille has to be the bes ever, though. A ninth round pick who's a lock for the hall of fame.

Mike York 136
Henrik Lundqvist 205
Marek Zidlicky 136

I wouldn't say, that Lundqvist is a steal, at least not yet. He has played in one IIHF World Championships, although he was good there, I still wouldn't say, he has proven himself in an international level. Many wonder, including me, why Hardy didn't play him in the WC. IMO he was the best goalie in Sweden's roster. :dunno:

Gretz was part of the Oilers organization when they came over from the WHA. So technically he wasn't drafted, at least not by an NHL team.

He played in the WHL with the Oilers before the team came into the NHL. That would be the reason he didn't get drafted. He was already part of a team.
