We always do this a lot with defenseman saying who was the best to never win a Norris but we rarely do it with goalies wondering who was the best to never win a Vezina. Of course prior to 1982 the Vezina went to the goalie with the best GAA so I'm going to include 1st team all-stars. For example Rogie Vachon had two 2nd team all-stars in his career and he shared a Vezina in 1968. He isnt counted. Chuck Rayner - Hall of Fame goalie had three second team all-star selections but never a Vezina despite a Hart Trophy in 1950. Gerry Cheevers - Despite the rep as a money goalie Cheevers never got an all-star selection. Not one. Therefore no Vezinas either, in fact he only played in one all-star game too ('69). Hard to believe. Curtis Joseph - Although I never have campaigned him as a Hall of Famer its still hard to believe he never had any all-star selections. Not even a 2nd team. Mike Richter - Just like Cujo no all-star selections for his career. But most importantly no Vezinas. Never was considered the best goalie in the game. Mike Vernon - Won 385 games. Only has a 2nd team all-star in '89. It surprises you that Vernon only has that one selection. If there's a guy you consider better feel free to name him. But who in your mind is the best goalie to never win the Vezina/1st all-star team?
Although Cheevers never received an All-Star nod, it could be argued that he received the higher distinction of being chosen a member of the 76 Canada Cup team -- Roggie got the ice time, but Cheevers (and Resch) were on the squad to back him up....
Those guys were only in the running for Team Canada because the two best Canadian goalies, Ken Dryden and Bernie Parent, couldn't attend the training camp because of injuries.
Martin Brodeur got robbed a couple times i think (Hasek won even though Brodeur had better stats) Hasek had a weak team though....(But still...It's not about team, it's about goalie) EDIT: I didn't read the title carefully. It says Best goalie who NEVER won Vezina... Whatevere!!1
