Also I should say in advance, apologies for not including Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water, as I know that's the content y'all wanted.

Easily the most shameful album purchase of all time for me was a Limp Bizkit one like 2 decades ago (and this is coming from a guy that spent allowance money on VANILLA f***ING ICE when he was in elementary school.)

I challenge anyone to go back and try to listen to any of their content for even 10 seconds without coming out traumatizedEDIT: Never mind, spend that time on good music instead. The fact that that kind of ear sodomy was ever popular...I don't even know what to say.

Good shout by OP to include Lost Souls by Doves in there, not my favourite album but still solid. Kid A and that PJ Harvey album have the bigger critical acclaim but my vote goes to Idlewild's 100 Broken Windows. The second album by the Scottish band is still one of the best and most consistent pure 'indie rock' albums I know. Though kent's Hagnesta Hill would win but it was an English version of a 1999 album that they released in 2000 so not really a 2000 album.

Hey John Otto, take em to the Matthew's bridge!

Pretty sure someone bought that album for me. It was a big reason why I never got into garbage like Slipknot and completely lost interest in Korn heading into my teens.

White Pony was the Deftones' giant middle finger to that dying genre.

I've given that Quasimodo album a few listens over the past few days and I can't say that I get the hype behind it. I'd heard one of the tracks on an 'Another Late Night' recording before. It's interesting, but hardly anything groundbreaking IMO.

Edit: Because it's Madlib. It's actually pretty solid after a few more listens.

1999 and 2001 both had great top-end quality. 2000 was pretty bad. I put votes in for Godspeed and Silver Mt Zion (and "other" of course) because I was happy to see them listed, but that's really a weak year.

1. Ruins - Pallaschtom
2. Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors
3. Cex - Role Model
4. The Olivia Tremor Control - Singles and Beyond
5. The Young Gods - Second Nature
6. Arthur H - Pour Madame X
7. René Lussier & Martin Tétreault - Qu'ouïe-je?
8. A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms
9. Louise Attaque - Comme on a dit
10. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

Edit:
Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - FAKEVOX should be at #3 or 4

As I just said in another thread, these threads by @Saturated Fats were the most fun I've had on HF. A few months ago, I went back through them, and noticed that my selection for the year 2000 was atrociously poor. So I went on and listened or relistened to over 160 albums from the year, and rated/ranked them all.

So here goes nothing - my ratings are the same as for my film comments, but contrarily to movies, I have absolutely no objective knowledge of music, so it's really only my tastes and I couldn't really argue why I feel this or that way about an album... In other words, might not be of much interest, but I don't give a shit...

My scale (I prefer to distinguish between good and great works than between mediocre stuff)

10 - Masterpiece that hits target on my personal preferences
9 - Masterpiece
8 - Great
7 - Very good
6 - Good
5 - Worth your time
4 - Somewhat ok
3 - Bland, common
2 - Poor
1 - Atrocious

* means it's really not my type of music and might be rated too low
+ means I'm aware this should probably be higher, but just couldn't
