The problem with the Habs isn't all on Bergevin, It's on Molson for letting him do the things he has done. The organization is too much like a friend's club where key positions are filled on what it seems based on friendship and personal connections rather than merit and Molson had allowed Bergevin to let go of key players like Markov and Radulov for nothing and then letting Bergevin sign bad contracts like the Price extension and Alzner deal. Molson could have interfered with all of those moves and it's within his right as President of the team and owner. But he choose to give Bergevin full autonomy to run wild.

It's time Molson hires a real hockey knowkedged individual to be team president and oversee hockey operations. That's what the Leafs did and it's the right approach. Clearly Molson is only team president to handle the business side of things, it's time to bring in someone to manage the hockey side of things.

The equivalent to what Molson has allowed Bergevin to do is like leaving an unqualified cook in the kitchen, it's clear the guy can't cook, It's time to get a new cook entirely to denote the one now and bring in a real chef to oversee the kitchen before a full house fire burns down the place.

Or just like Homer Simpson being in charge of the reactor's safety.

I wonder if Bergevin has been watching Seinfeld re-runs. In particular the one where George is trying desperately to make Steinbrenner fire him, but Steinbrenner insists on being lenient. Maybe he and Molson are both fans of the show.

Meh. Maybe Molson doesn't even take a glance at what's going on on the ice. Maybe all he looks at are the balance sheets prepared by the accountant. We're in the green? I trust the GM. We're in the red? Fix it or get fired.

Maybe that's part of the reason for this cap space.

I miss George Gillet.

After the nightmare that was Jeffrey Loria, a lot of people didn't trust Gillet. A lot of people thought he would be a new Loria. But in hindsight he was really good. The team sucked horribly before he came. And now that he left the team is back to what it was back in the late 90s and worse. Woohoo.

Really his regime was golden if you think about it. The guy is not stupid, he got rich by putting competent people at the right places so his business would be successful. Molson grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, he doesn't really know how business really work. He is doing what he learned, reward people cause you like them, not cause they deserve it.

Well now that's just great.

Basically, Renaud Lavoie learned "from a very reliable source" that MB still has Geoff Molson's complete trust and can make all his decisions freely, knowing that his job is not at stake.

Marc Bergevin bien en selle à Montréal - TVA Sports

I'm not hopeful he'll be replaced soon. I heard the same thing months ago "from a very reliable source", MB is staying and will be gone next season if the team falters again, last chance for purple pants during next regular season.

No one can tank as well than MB trying to create a competitive club of grinders, we are in great hands! Galchenyuk is probably out soon for some character guy with an overblown reputation; will get Lafreniere in a couple of years ;)

AKA Lavoie is a part-time employee, full-time mouthpiece for the Habs. I can't believe we have a thread started, based on something Lavoie said.

You underestimate Bergevin's charisma. Dude knows how to say all the right things so that you can't win a debate with him if anything uncertain is involved. Spew a few cliches, draw an analogy to Washington, and Molson is sold on giving him a chance to rebuild.

It stings really bad, knowing that the owner can't see what is obvious to everyone else, and has been for many months already. :help:

Hopefully it's like that time Bob Gainey reassured everyone that Carbo was his guy to be the head coach, and Guy was fired in the following days/weeks.

If only he were 100% dedicated to being a hockey executive, he might have been learning something and not be as captive on the pablum his GM feeds him.

Also, the company is becoming more and more diversified and Geoff doesn't seem to want to to give any of sectors that he might have been able to handle before it expanded.

What is clear is that Geoff cannot continue to be a part-time overseer and that he'll need check and balances to reign in his GM. It's going to take performance reviews and accountability -- they'd need to empirically establish who is not doing the job relative to hockey world parameters and begin a process of aggressively poaching the best from competing clubs.

Habs have a massive revenue advantage that they absolutely have to wield in all areas where there are no cap restrictions.

They are squandering opportunities simply by continuing to trust the same people over the same responsibilities. There is enough of a track record to know what went wrong -- they need someone who is not within Bergevin's circle to establish the areas of discrepancy and begin the most important and pressing retool of all -- that of the management group.

It will be something like Galchenyuk for Scott Laughton.
