Mike Smith has stuck around to ride a 24/1 shot in race 13 at Belmont. This guy is off the charts professional.

Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts):
  • Opened its brief live racing meet with a 13-race card that sported riding incentives to jockeys. Dylan Davis and Edwin Gonzalez each won twice. Davis won a race in which his 56-year-old father Robbie also rode. No trainer won more than once.
  • Race 5: Khan of Khans ran for the 107th time (29-20-7) and is 12-years-old. He had won his last three races before finishing 5th here.
Belmont (New York):

  • Another Triple Crown. Awesome! Justify, the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown, is now 6 6-0-0 and has earned over $3.7 million.
triple-crown-winners1.jpg
  • Races 3 through 11 all had purses of $400,000 or more. including a half dozen of $700,000+.
  • Attendance was 90,327.
  • Money:
    • $137,954,895 was wagered on the card, second largest in NYRA history only to Belmont Stakes day 2014 (California Chrome).
    • $72,702,815 was bet on the Belmont Stakes.
    • $168,975,295 was bet in the three-day racing weekend.
  • Bob Baffert won three of his four races and combined with Santa Anita was 7 4-0-1.
  • Javier Castellano won the opener and finale. Mike Smith and Irad Ortiz, Jr. also won twice. Following the Belmont Stakes, Smith was replaced by Junior Alvarado on board the outside horse in race 13, the finale. I guess he was too busy doing something else to ride. :sarcasm:
  • Race 13: The $.50 trifecta returned over $1.300. The $.10 superfecta was over $2,100.
  • Race 11: I limited the bets to Justify over New York connections (riders/trainers) as mentioned in an earlier post and that is how it played out though, of course, getting the correct order of finish was key. Still the $.10 super of $105 was a solid amount with the assistance of a price (Gronkowski) finishing second. The $2 Pick 6 was $81,000+. The $.50 Pick 5 was over $5,000.

  • Race 10: Edgar Prado, in his lone ride of the day, won for the 7,002 time and deserves extra praise for an outstanding effort on board an 18-to-1 in the 117th running of the Manhattan.

  • Race 9: Bee Jersey (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $1.2 million Met Handicap gate-to-wire. The 4-year-old colt is a perfect 4-for-4 in 2018 and has not trailed in any race. That is a superb feat. Among the defeated in this race were Bolt d'Oro (2018) and McCracken (2017), two colts who ran in Kentucky Derby races.
  • Race 5: Hoppertunity (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) has surpassed $4.6 million in lifetime earnings after his 9th victory in 32 races. The 7-year-old is 2-for-3 this year and has won both races in his life at Belmont. He trailed in the stretch then opened a 2 1/2 length win.
  • Race 4: Monomoy Girl (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) is developing into a dream girl. The filly is now 8 7-1-0 after winning the Grade I Acorn Stakes. She has three consecutive Grade I wins. Remarkable achievements to date and is nearing $1.4 million in earnings.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 4: A 101-to-1 came in second place.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Daniel Centeno won three times in seven starts. He is one of four riders with 5+ wins in the early part of the meet. Steve Hamilton and his son Weston, the latter whom leads with six, are also on that list. Fergal Lynch also has five wins and is at 36%. I think Weston will be a finalist for Apprentice of the Year, as we near the halfway point of 2018 and maybe is the leading candidate at this point.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Karl Broberg is human! The leading trainer in North America in 2018 was 8 0-2-2.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 11: The $2 Pick 6 paid more than $33,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 2: Was won by a 70-to-1 shot which was the highest odds in a field of 10 and paid $142.10. The $2 tri was a mindboggling $22,733.40. The $.20 super was over $10,000. The $2 exacta was $1,193.80. The winning rider was Kazushi Kimura, a 10-pound apprentice, who won for the first time in North America in 11 starts.
  • Race 3: The second highest odds on the board won at 15-to-1. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $1,600.
  • Race 4: The $.20 Pick 3 paid over $4,000.
  • Race 6: The $.20 Pick 5 paid over $69,000.
  • Race 10: A 75-to-1, the second highest odds in a field of 10, finished second.
  • Race 11: In the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, all Ontario breds, Dixie Moon (Eurico da Silva/Catherine Day Phillips) scored a win at 3-to-1 and bested four opponents including Wonder Gadot (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) who was sent off the favorite. The winner finished ninth under Mike Smith at Keeneland back in April. The runner up had a 1-to-5 morning line and is now winless in six starts in 2018. She received much attention for her successful 2017 campaign in which she won three of five races.

Justify's schedule:
  • Monday, June 11: ship to Churchill Downs (Kentucky)
  • Saturday, June 16: expected to be paraded around Churchill Downs
  • Rest for about a week
  • Monday, June 18: ship to Santa Anita (California)
  • Next race: undetermined
June 10, 2018

Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts):
  • The first of three scheduled summertime weekend cards concluded.
  • Dylan Davis won four times this weekend to lead the jockey's standings.
  • Race 12: Dr. Blarney (Tami Piermarini/Karl Grusmark) won the pre-card opener though listed as race 12 in the program, a rare non-betting race run for purse money only. The victory was by a dominating 12 1/2 lengths. The Mass-bred is 19 13-0-3 lifetime including a perfect 7 7-0-0 at his hometown track.
  • New York-based trainer Rudy Rodriguez went 6 2-2-1. He was a combined 13 4-4-1 at three tracks.
Belmont (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won five times and was a combined 10 5-1-1. Ortiz is the leading rider in North America with 167 victories, 31 more than Timothy Thornton who is in second place.
  • Race 8: Irad Ortiz, Jr. finished second at 10-to-1 in a race that had a 23-to-1 winner ridden by Pablo Fragoso. The $.50 tri paid over $1,400. The four longest shots on the board topped the superfecta ticket which returned over $11,000 for a $1 winning bet.
  • Race 9: In the $150,000 Jersey Girl, Sower (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Linda Rice), who was 2-for-2 lifetime in Maryland, won by more than four lengths and at 9-to-2.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $67,000 when Steelersfanforlife, ridden by John Velazquez, won. The track announcer said the victor "won by the length of a football." Velazquez entered the race with just one win in his last 29 starts.
  • Winningest riders at the meet: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (33), Jose Ortiz (28), Manny Franco (25), John Velazquez (24).
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 1: The winner in the opener was named Sports Betting, a 2-year-old colt who was out for the first time.
  • Race 8: In the lone race in which the favorite did not win or finish last, Joe Bravo edged Antonio Gallardo in a race in which trainer Chad Brown finished 1st and 2nd. Favorites won seven of the 11 races and finished dead last in three of the four losses.
  • Antonio Gallardo won three times and hit the board on each mount 5 3-1-1.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Races 1 and 10: Weston Hamilton won the opener and finale which adds to his resume for a 2018 Apprentice of the Year candidate.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Luis Quinonez had a natural hat trick en route to a 7 4-0-1 night. In 2017, he had the second most starts (Irad Ortiz, Jr. had 42 more) of any jockey in North America and was third in wins.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 1: The winner paid over $68.
  • Race 2: The $1 double paid over $600.
  • Race 3: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $740.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $8,000.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 Jackpot returned more than $60,000 to winners.
  • Race 7: A 1-to-9 favorite ran off-the-board.
Golden Gate Fields (California):
  • The meet ended today. The track reopens in late August.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 was hit for more than $54,000.
  • Race 8: In the Grade III $100,000 Affirmed Stakes. Draft Pick (Joe Talamo/Peter Eurton) pulled a mild upset in a race that included Solomini (Martin Garcia/Bob Baffert) who was a 4-to-5 morning line favorite and sent off as the prohibitive favorite in a short field. The $1 exacta of $71.80 is noteworthy.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 4 exceeded $41,000. The $1 Pick 3 was over $5,000. The $2 tri was over $3,000, helped when a 93-to-1, the longest shot of 13 in the field, came in third. The $1 super was over $18,000, a race won by the 3-to-1 favorite.
  • Race 8: In the $125,000 Grade III feature, Code Warrior (Luis Contreras/Michael DePaulo) pulled an upset with the fifth highest set of odds on the board at 6-to-1 in a field of seven.
  • Race 5: The $2 tri paid over $3,000.

It's like once American Pharoah broke through, the Belmont aura/mystique as a Triple Crown graveyard was shattered.

Baffert lost 3 Triple Crowns in 6 years at Belmont- now he's got 2!

I enjoyed reading Baffert's comments recently about his Triple Crown failures. Silver Charm did run his heart out as the trainer said and 1997 was one of the deepest years for 3-year-olds maybe going back to the late 1970s. War Emblem was called "light" which was an interesting term but that was a race in which he was doomed at the break. I recall during that T.C. year that the horse had a vicious reputation where he liked to bite things including horses and people. Real Quiet almost won the Triple Crown but really wasn't an overpowering horse in the likeness of some of the recent greats. Though he lost the Derby and not the Belmont, Point Given may have been better than those mentioned.

Justify
did something not accomplished since 1882 when he won the Kentucky Derby and that is win the event as an unraced 2-year-old. I remember his first race but had no idea of what was to occur 16 weeks later. To be 6-for-6 in that time in phenomenal. No small achievement. He may not have hit his peak yet.

Gun Runner retired as a sensation and performed better as he aged. Only time will tell if Justify will finish a glorious career unbeaten or not. As I said about American Pharoah, let's enjoy the moment. It may be a year or five or three decades before we see another Triple Crown. This is the hardest event to win in sport, or at least in a category of a few.

After the dust settled, many observers discussed the tactics of Florent Geroux in this race. Others questioned why Javier Castellano opted to sit back when he had a horse that was supposed to set the pace.

The DRF had an article which mentioned both strategies including one most interesting quote from owner Mike Repole. Castellano has switched agents twice in the last three years.

GEROUX

Mike Repole, co-owner of Vino Rosso, who finished fourth, and Noble Indy, who finished last, said he was confused by Geroux’s tactics on Restoring Hope, who ultimately finished eighth.

“It baffled me,” Repole said. “I would have thought Baffert would have wanted Restoring Hope nowhere close to the pace. When Geroux broke next to last I would have thought that was a great scenario, he doesn’t have to worry about him. We watched him rush up like he was a Quarter Horse, make a quick right-hand turn, then turn left, pinned [Bravazo] on the rail. He looked like a bodyguard making sure nobody got close to Justify.”

John Velazquez, the rider of Vino Rosso, said he felt Geroux rode Restoring Hope in a manner to protect Justify.

“Why would you send a horse that breaks bad and take everybody out, then come back in?” Velazquez, a Hall of Fame rider, said. “That’s his job, to protect the other horse and it worked for them. You have to give it to them.”

-----------------------
CASTELLANO

Castellano said his horse broke slowly and hit the side of the gate. He said he tried to get the horse forwardly placed, but soon realized he wasn't going to be able to get ahead of Justify.

“He wanted me to be on the lead, but I didn’t have enough speed to get to the lead,” Castellano said. “I made an effort, but I got to the point where I had to give up. How far can I go - 10 wide - and try to go to the lead? I can’t.”

Pletcher, the trainer of Noble Indy, confirmed that the plan was to have that horse in a forward position early.
“Javier opted to go to his plan B,” Pletcher said. “Mike and I didn’t discuss a plan B.”

Repole said Castellano will likely not ride for him for the near future.

“You get to run in this race one time in your life, you would expect to follow directions,” Repole said. “He chose an audible, that doesn’t sit well with me. It’ll be awhile before you see Javier in the blue and orange silks.”

The winner in the opening race at Monmouth on Sunday was named SPORTS BETTING. Somehow apropos.

West Virginia has race tracks but Mississippi is void of any to my knowledge though casinos are available.

MGM reportedly bought Yonkers (harness) and a related casino property a few days ago for about $850m which could get that entity the proper framework to offer sports betting should New York eventually approve.

Monmouth set to begin taking sports bets Thursday | Daily Racing Form

Dennis Drazin, the head of the company that operates Monmouth Park, said after the legislation was signed that Monmouth will open its sportsbook on Thursday. Monmouth has already built a sportsbook, in partnership with William Hill, the British bookmaking company, which will manage the sports-betting operation.

“Today is a great day for New Jersey,” Drazin said.

Monmouth officials have said that they expect to offer straight bets with point spreads and money lines, along with over/under wagers. The track also plans to offer prop bets on specific outcomes within games, plus parlays, future bets, and teaser bets. For straight bets with point spreads, Monmouth plans to pay $10 out on each $11 bet.

------------------

A number of other states are seeking to authorize sports betting through a variety of initiatives, with Mississippi and West Virginia considered the likeliest to approve the practice next. In New York, legislation has been introduced to allow for sports betting, but New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said that the issue is not a priority for this year.

Rich complaints from Repole.

Everyone ganged up on Smarty Jones in 2004 and ran outside of their tactics, most egregiously Jerry Bailey, who is so full of shit every time he brings it up

I mentioned a couple of these horses above. Bee Jersey has not trailed in a race this year in four starts.

Monomoy Girl is a "dream" 3-year-old filly. Other than Justify, she is the only 3-year-old to make the cut and that in itself is outstanding.

NTRA poll released of the top ten horses in North America.

The link to the 3-year-old poll on NTRA worked this morning, however, the ranking for the list posted below is broken on the NTRA site. Four people do not have Justify as the top horse from what I gather based on the first place votes in parenthesis.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Frankie Pennington won four times.
June 13, 2018

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Team Colors (Junior Alvarado/Jimmy Jerkens) was a sleeper pick at 8-to-1. He went into the gate at 7-to-1, all fine and dandy. And then, went 7-to-2 during the race. Yikes. A dramatic shift. Alvarado, caught the rail, not exactly his normal preference, and won. Good price and a win in a win, but not priced as advertised. Andy Serling saw the glass as half full.

  • Race 2: The second longest odds on the board beat the favorite and paid $18.00
  • Race 3: Javier Castellano romped by more than 4 lengths and once again the favorite was runner up.
  • Race 4: This is where the fun began or increased depending on who played what. The top five finishers were sent off at: 14-to-1, 12-to-1, 70-to-1, 44-to-1 and 45-to-1. Dylan Davis/Gary Sciacca won the race. The star may have been Mike Luzzi, in his lone race of the day, who rode with energy to get third by a head at 70-to-1. Due to the stunning odds at the top of the ticket, Luzzi/John Toscano's third place got bettors $44.60 to show. Incredible! The $.50 tri was over $2,200. The $1 super returned more than $145,000 or whatever was in the pool. A $.10 super paid over $14,000.
  • Race5: A 60-to-1 ridden by David Cohen had the lead at the 3/4 pole but faded to third yet still paid $20.60 at the end. Joe Bravo won the race. The $.50 Pick 5 paid close to $15,000
  • Race 6: American Power (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Jason Servis) looked like a cinch and won by over 5 lengths.
  • Race 7: It was the brother's turn. Jose Ortiz won with a favorite. The runner up, ridden by Junior Alvarado, finished second for the fifth straight time.
  • Race 8: Second win of the day for Dylan Davis.
  • Race 9: An 0-for-14 maiden broke her skid with a victory under Abel Lezcano. The winner paid $40.20. The $2 Pick 6 paid over $35,000.
  • Joel Rosario finished second in four of his six starts.
  • New York handled over $7,000,000.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 2: The prohibitive favorite won by more than 15 lengths. His name? Antley's Courage. I have inquired to see if it is named for one of my all-time favorites. The horse was out for the second time and had a large class drop from his maiden race at Belmont last month.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Sports betting is advertised during the simulcast feed.
  • Race 5: The longest shot on the board wired the field at 25-to-1.
  • Race 7: Among the entries was possibly the only New Hampshire-bred currently running.
  • The trainer's standings is tight. Two trainers have four wins while eight others have three victories.
  • Carol Cedeno leads the rider standings with seven wins. She won the 2015 meet and finished second last year.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Race 6: I am not sure the last time a horse won with just three days in between starts but it happened tonight. Sunday Dinner, a 6-year-old mare, ran Saturday at Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts) where she finished 6th in a field of 12.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Race 7: The winner paid $67.20.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • A power outage canceled live racing.
An update with Justify:
  • June 16: He will be paraded at Churchill Downs. NBCSN will air two races starting at 8:30 pm ET.
  • June 17: He is scheduled to arrive in California, likely early afternoon.
  • June 23: He will be paraded at some point during a special ceremony on Saturday.
  • Next race: Still unknown.

Somethings going on out at Golden Gate Fields tomorrow. Doesn't sound good.

Simulcast issues with the track, a board, horsemen and Stronach's Group/Ritvo (Gulfstream, Laurel, Santa Anita, etc.).

"The (California Horse Racing Board) has threatened our license if we do not operate (with NOTWINC), which costs the industry money," Ritvo said. "We want to inform the horsemen to get involved. Otherwise, there will be no more racing at Golden Gate Fields."

Ritvo: Golden Gate Could Close Over Simulcast Issue - BloodHorse

=============================
Future In Doubt For Golden Gate Fields In Northern California - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Officials with The Stronach Group have called what it refers to as an “urgent meeting” with horsemen at Golden Gate Fields to discuss the future of the Northern California racetrack it owns.

The Stronach Group and the California Horse Racing Board are at an impasse over the company's application for a license to its upcoming meeting at Golden Gate. The company wants to run its simulcasting business – a big share of handle in Northern California – without going through an entity known as Northern California Offtrack Wagering Inc. (NOTWINC). A similar business, Southern California Offtrack Wagering Inc (SCOTWINC) exists in Southern California.
The CHRB has said it cannot license Golden Gate Fields for its live meeting unless it works with NOTWINC.

Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer for The Stronach Group, has made no secret of his desire to run year-round at Golden Gate Fields, following a similar model at the company's racetracks in Florida and Maryland. That would likely put an economic squeeze on county fair races that currently operate during the prime racing dates in summer and have significant clout in the state capitol in Sacramento.

The purpose of Thursday's meeting, scheduled to take place in the Golden Gate paddock at 10 a.m. PT, is to rally horsemen behind The Stronach Group's efforts to operate without going through NOTWINC and expand dates. “We want to inform the horsemen to get involved,” Ritvo told Bloodhorse.com. “Otherwise, there will be no more racing at Golden Gate Fields.”

Looking at Churchill's card for Saturday, there are five races at $100,000 or more. Mike Smith, John Velazquez, the Ortiz brothers, Luis Saez and more are scheduled to ride. One of Todd Pletcher's starters, Patch who ran in the 2017 Kentucky Derby, will be picked up by Saez. Javier Castellano is riding at Belmont and doesn't have a mount in the feature race which is small by comparison to what Churchill is offering on Saturday. He has changed agents twice in the last three years. Maybe he has a commitment in New York but his absence at Churchill is noticeable.

Belmont (New York):
  • Junior Alvarado, Dylan Davis and Jose Ortiz won twice. Nine trainers won, no one repeated.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $16,000. The biggest winner $14. That is a healthy return considering.
  • Race 6: A 2-to-1 morning line entry was sent off at 5-to-1. One of the two paired was victorious.
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $21,000. A nice figure but overshadowed by what happened at Churchill and Santa Anita today.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 7: Chalk ruled the day with favorites or even money shots winning each race with one exception when Mario Pino won on board a 9-to-1 shot. The 56-year-old native of Delaware rides sparingly but is 34 9-3-8 (26%/59%) in 2018.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Down goes the jackpot! Someone nailed the latest $.20 Pick 6 'pot for $549,774.80. Not bad for twenty cents or whatever the investment which I would gather is a wee bit more. EDIT: It turns out none other than Ron Paolucci hit the jackpot with an investment of $1.764. Paolucci owns race horses and also has been known to dabble into handicapping at high volumes.
  • Churchill unveiled the 2019 Kentucky Derby logo today:
DfqltUZX4AELOE2.jpg
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $37,000. The $2 Pick 4 paid over $7,000. An 11-year-old was out for the 109th time and finished fifth.
  • Race 7: Won by jockey Jesus Rios who entered the race 1-for-99 in 2018. He was on a 44-race losing streak. The winner was the favorite.
  • The $.20 Rainbow Six Jackpot will begin in excess of $502,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 5: The ticket was topped by 17-to-1, 10-to-1 and 46-to-1 with the even-money favorite finishing fourth. The $.50 trifecta was over $2,700. The $.50 Pick 4 was over $2,500. The $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $7,500.
  • Race 8: A seismic payout in the $2 Pick 6 when someone walked off with $236,857.80. The winning ticket was purchased in Inglewood, California. The winning combo was 7-4-2-1-1-6.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Jose Lezcano has a long established reputation for success of turf. He won at 23-to-1.
  • Race 2: Pablo Fragoso doesn't win many but when he does they usually seem to be bombs. Today it was a 39-to-1, $78.00 winner. The double was $656.00.
  • Race 3: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $2,400.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid in excess of $54,000. The $.50 Pick 4 was over $3,500.
  • Race 7: Paco Lopez, who won the fifth race at 16-to-1, brought home another high price at 15-to-1 and set a track record while at it. He finished a successful day 3 2-0-1. Axtell ran the 6 furlongs turf race in 1:06.78 which barely nipped the prior mark. Trainer Kevin Boniface was 0-for-22 in 2018, had lost 46 in a row and last saw victory in August.
  • David Greening on DRF pointed out that of the last 27 races, only trainer Phil Serpe has won more than once. That means 26 trainers have won 27 races.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas won three times, all by the fifth race. He surpassed Tyler Gaffalione (54) as the meet's winningest rider with 55 victories.
  • Race 5: Trainer Mark Casse had two entered at 12-to-1 morning line, which in itself is a rarity. He won with Edgard Zayas riding and paid $58.60. Casse is a Hall-of-Fsmer in Canada and has an extensive relationship with the Florida t-bred racing including breeding.
  • Trainer Antonio Sano brought home the early daily double.
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 8: The winner paid $93.40. The $2 Pick 4 paid over $9,000.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 1: Trainer Daniel Peitz won for the 400th time in his career and at 10-to-1.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Flavien Prat, who is the meet's leading rider, is expected to move his tack to New York for at least two weeks. The move seems imminent.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: The $1 Pick 4 paid in excess of $13,000.
  • Race 7: The winner paid $55.40. The $2 double paid $824.50. The $2 Pick 5 paid $10,666.60. The $1 Pick 4 returned close to $5,000. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $2,200.
  • Race 6: The winner paid $37.40.
  • Eurico Da Silva, who began the meet suspended, won three times and is second in victories among riders.

A preview to tonight's entertaining card at Churchill includes race 9 and the Regret Stakes (Post Time is 10:11 pm ET). The morning line favorite has the inside post and at 5-to-1. A 5-to-1 morning line favorite is something rare.

Belmont (New York):
  • Kendrick Carmouche shined today with four winners on five mounts. He was 5 4-0-1.
  • Race 10: The $2 pick 4 was over $11,655.00. The $2 Pick 3 was over $2,300.
  • Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr. Luis Saez and John Velazquez all booked it to Kentucky following the fifth race for the stakes card at Churchill tonight.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 5: A $100.00 winner (exactly). The exacta was $841. The tri returned over $1,700.
  • Race 6: The $2 Pick 3 returned over $3,900. The $2 double was $777.
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 4 was over $13,000.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Victor Carrasco is due to return tomorrow. He was injured with multiple fractures in a broken right leg back in September.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 7: Trainer Gary Jackson is now 1-for-30 this year after winning with a 32-to-1 shot. The superfecta returned over $24,000 for $1. The $.50 tri was over $3,000.
  • Race 8: A first time starter and Florida-bred has the interesting name of Joe DiBaggio.
  • Race 12: The $.20 Rainbow 6 paid out in excess of $14,000. Four horses were singled in the finale but alas the Fathers' Day card sports a Rainbow 6 carryover of $597,239.
  • After winning three straight starts earlier this month, Luca Panici has lost his last 24 mounts.
  • One ominous note about Gulf's post positions this meet: avoid the far outside in sprints. In dirt races, posts 10 through 12 were a combined 0-for-42 at a most recent check. In turf sprints, those same posts were a combined 3-for-56. Three wins in 98 races for posts 10 through 12 in short races.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 5: King Zachary (Robby Albarado/Dale Romans) topped a $2 exacta that paid $189.40. Romans finished 1st and 2nd in the race. The second highest price on the board paid $26.60 in winning the $100,000 Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes for 3-year-olds. It was the rider's second win on the card. Ax Man (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert), who entered the race with 3 wins in 4 lifetime starts, finished third as the 1-to-2 favorite.
  • Race 6: Mr. Misunderstood (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) recovered from an early bump and won the $200,000 Grade II Wise Dan for 3-year-olds and up. The winner was 0-for-3 in 2018 after a sensational 2017 in which he won 7 of 8 races. He loves the turf with a career mark of 12 9-1-0 on the surface. It was the third win tonight for Geroux and the second victory for Cox.
  • Race 7: Blue Prize (Jose Ortiz/Ignacio Correas), bred in Argentina, improved to 14 4-7-1 and will head to the Breeders' Cup after a "Win and You're In" victory in the $200,000 Grade II Fleur De Lis for fillies and mares.

  • Race 8: Pavel (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) advanced to the Breeders' Cup Classic after winning the $500,000 Grade I Stephen Foster, a "Win and You're In" race. The four-year-old won for just the third time in 10 starts and first time since September at Parx. He was sent off at 6-to-1. Same owner as Nyquist. Backyard Heaven (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) was sent off the favorite and landed off the board in his 5th start. Going back to June 10, Brown has a mark of 10 3-5-1 (this was his lone time not making the board). The $2 tri returned over $3,000. The show horse paid $26.00

  • Race 9: In the $100,000 Grade III Regret Stakes, for three-year-old fillies, Beyond Blame (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won for the third time in 6 starts. The rider won four tonight on this card and the trainer has three victories. The duo has teamed for three wins. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $13,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid more than $14,000. Mike Smith, who didn't win in three starts, brought home a 16-to-1 in second place. The $2 exacta was $162. Since winning the Kentucky Derby, Smith has won 7 times in 29 starts and five of those wins have been in Grade I races.

  • Florent Geroux won four times. Robby Albarado won three times including the opener and closer. I don't recall the last time he won three on a card. Geroux and Albarado combined to win 7 of the 11 races.
  • Brad Cox trained three winners and finished in the money with all five starters at 5 3-1-1. Combined with two starts at Belmont, he ended his day 7 4-2-1 (57%/100%).
  • Florent Geroux should win Jockey of the Week based on the events today. It will be interesting to see any fallout from his controversial Belmont Stakes ride.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Trainer Chris Block won a stakes race for the 44th time which ties him with Hall of Famer Harry Trotsek for the all-time lead at the track.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 4: Anonymity (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella) is now 3 2-1-0 lifetime. The lightly raced 4-year-old filly could be headed to a stakes race next.
  • Race 6: Ollie's Candy (Kent Desormeaux/William Morey) won the $200,000 Grade 2 for 3-year-old fillies, at 7-to-2.
  • Race 11: The finale was won by more than 10 lengths.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • The meet's leading rider Rafael Hernandez picked up five victories. He also had the highly uncommon early double and late double. He had nine mounts and failed to hit the board with the other four. An impressive day nonetheless.
  • Mark Casse and Norman McKnight both have 30 victories which leads the trainers' standings at the meet. McKnight is 41%/73% at the meet with 49 less starts than Casse.

Hockey’s Johnson To Name Recent 2-Year-Old Purchase In Honor Of Late Olin Gentry - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Horseman Olin Gentry collapsed on the OBS grounds on Friday, from what was later diagnosed as a stroke, according to thoroughbreddailynews.com. The 51-year-old was taken off life support on Saturday.

Hockey player Erik Johnson was “gutted” by the news of Gentry's death, according to his Twitter account. Johnson plans to name his most recent 2-year-old purchase, a filly by Uncle Mo, in Gentry's honor.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: Oscar Performance (Jose Ortiz/Brian Lynch) became the third horse in the last week to set track records at Belmont. That is a stunning statistic considering the many decades the track has been in operation. The 4-year-old ridgling, who entered having earned over $1.7 million lifetime with a mark of 11 6-0-1, ran the turf mile in 1:31.23 and received a career-high 104 Beyer figure.
  • Race 4: Odd series of events followed a disastrous fall in which two riders and horses went down. Manny Franco remained on the card. Rajiv Maragh was hospitalized, however suffered no significant injury upon initial reports. Unfortunately, one of the horses was euthanized. Maragh had four remaining mounts but was replaced with the following results:
Race 5: Dylan Davis won and paid $51.50 on a 24-to-1 bomb.
Race 7: Dylan Davis finished third on board a 58-to-1 bomber.
Race 8: Junior Alvarado finished second on board a 7-to-1 shot.
Race 10: Pablo Fragoso won at 8-to-1.
  • Race 3: Tombelaine (David Cohen/Robertino Diodoro) set the track record for six furlongs on turf in 1:06.74. The prior mark didn't last too long as it was set earlier this week at 1:06.78.
  • Julio Pezua, who hasn't ridden since 2013, last won in March 2012 and has over 12,000 starts, rode today. More on that should be known. Pezua is listed at 61 years-of-age.
  • Elias Peltroche made a rare visit to the track. He was scratched at the gate in his only start. Yikes! He was 9 3-4-1 within the past week at Finger Lakes.
  • Ashley Castrenze, who caught my eye as a bug in 2016, rode in race 9. She is basically exercising horses for Thomas Proctor and picks up a rare start at different tracks usually in the mid-Atlantic area.
  • John Velazquez, who won his lone start in New York before traveling to Kentucky yesterday, failed to hit the board today in five starts. He has won just once in his last 23 starts.
  • Leading riders at meet: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (37), Jose Ortiz (33), Manny Franco (29), John Velazquez (25).
  • Leading trainers at the meet: Chad Brown (27), Todd Pletcher, Linda Rice, Rudy Rodriguez (13 each), Wesley Ward and Jason Servis (with 12 each). Servis has won half his starts, 12-for-24.
  • The same gripe applies since the meet opened and the design changed: the graphics on the simulcast feed need fixing. Start with increasing the size of the odds and the rider changes/scratches.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 11: The $100,000 Pegasus Stakes, not to be confused with the Pegasus World Cup held at Gulfstream, was won by Joe Bravo who was victorious twice in four starts.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Steve Hamilton was removed from his mounts the last couple of days. I am not sure the reason. UPDATE: He is sidelined with what was reported as "back pain."
  • Has a nice turf course.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Samy Camacho, having the best year of his young career, and Miguel Vasquez, who was 9 3-1-4, each won three times. Camacho excelled at the Tampa Bay meet.
  • Jeffrey Sanchez won both of his starts.
  • Race 11: In the stretch and battling for the lead, Reylu Gutierrez, a bug, lost control and fell from his mount.
  • Race 2: Scratch that 24-race losing streak mentioned above. Luca Panici won at 13-to-1.
  • Race 1: Trainer Gary Jackson began the year 0-for-29. He won yesterday and again today. He enters the next day of racing with a 2-race win streak.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Florent Geroux started the day where he left off yesterday. He was victorious with his first two mounts. Geroux is my candidate for Jockey of the Week.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Ramon Vazquez won three races, including a natural hat trick. It was his third three-win outing in the last five cards.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Positively astonishing: I don't recall the last double that paid over $3,000 but it happened today. More impressively, the same rider brought home both ends. That has to be as rare as a perfect game in baseball.
  • Races 6 and 7: Javier Padron-Barcenas, a jockey who will live in annals, brought home a double worth $3,153.20. That figure is shocking in itself but for one rider to do it is unimaginable. The rider is 4-for-93 lifetime, half his career wins came in this double. The win bets paid "only" $42 and $47.
  • Race 6: The $2 exacta was $1,076.80. $1,000+ exactas are usually phenomenal but somehow dwarfed by the double figure. The $.50 tri was over $1,700. The $.10 super paid over $2,000.
  • Mike Luzzi got a cool Father's Day gift. His son Lane won twice tonight.
  • Iram Diego finished 7 3-1-2.
  • Karl Broberg, the winningest trainer in North America in 2018, failed to win and made the board just twice with seven starters.
Santa Anita (California):
  • The $2 Pick 6 had multiple winners, each to receive over $26,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 12: The $1 Pick 4 was a sizeable $33,456. The $2 double was $766.
  • Race 11: Chantal Sutherland sparkled on board a 43-to-1 bomber. The longest shot on the board paid $88.30. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $6,500.
  • Race 9: Gamble's Ghost (Eurico da Silva/Josie Carroll) won the Grade III $150,000 feature at 7-to-2. The meet's two top riders (Rafael Hernandez and Eurico da Silva) topped the $39 exacta. Mark Casse, tied for the most wins among trainers at the meet, had three entered.
  • Trainer Norman McKnight added two more wins to his total and now leads the meet by one victory.
