Ongoing thread for winners tonight...

Finest City, who won today under Mike Smith, has been named the best female sprinter.

Drefong has been named the best male sprinter.

Rawnaq is named champion steeplechaser.

WinStar Farm named champion breeder.

Tepin named champion turf female

Flintshire named champion turf male in the closest vote 137-76 over Highland Reel.

Luis Ocasio was named top apprentice rider. Lane Luzzi tailed off after what seemed to be a winning path to the award. Kevin Gomez got one of the three nominations but had zero votes in the final tally.

Javier Castellano was named top jockey.

California Chrome named champion older dirt male and unanimously with all 248 votes.

Beholder has been named top older female horse.

Juddmonte Farms named outstanding owner.

Chad Brown named top trainer. Well-done speech.

Songbird named champion 3-year-old filly. That's my girl! The recipients forgetting the trophy at the podium was priceless. Good job by the second speaker to praise Rick Porter in such a way.

Arrogate named champion 3-year-old male.

Champagne Room named top 2-year-old filly. Looks as if someone was enjoying the evening prior to the award. :)

Classic Empire named top 2-year-old male and unanimously with all 248 votes.

California Chrome named horse of the year. What the heck is this speech? Someone get him off the stage.

This is a wonderful story. Page McKenney has been nothing short of exceptional especially considering his purchase price.

Dismissing his age, inactivity and a group of seven eager rivals including fellow graded stakes winner Kid Cruz, popular gelding Page McKenney made a triumphant return to the races Saturday in the $75,000 Native Dancer at Laurel Park.

The 49th running of the Native Dancer for 4-year-olds and up anchored a nine-race program with four stakes worth $300,000 in purses including the $75,000 Whiteley for 3-year-olds and $75,000 Marshua for 3-year-old fillies, and the $75,000 Nellie Morse for fillies and mares 4 and older.

Making his 7-year-old debut off a nine-month layoff due to minor hip and tendon issues, Page McKenney ($4.80) became the third horse to win the Native Dancer in back-to-back years joining Christopher R. (1975-76) and Little Bold John (1986-87).

Trained by Mary Eppler since being haltered for $16,000 in July 2013, it was also the 10th career stakes victory for claimer-turned-millionaire Page McKenney and 25th consecutive top three finish dating back to May 2014.

“He's back,” Eppler said. “It's great. I think this race really helped tighten him up a little bit. I thought he was coming in a little bit soft and a little bit heavy. They did try him.”

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/t...-off-7-year-old-season-native-dancer-victory/

Eppler said either the $75,000 John B. Campbell at one mile or the $250,000 General George at seven furlongs, both for 4-year-olds and up on Feb. 18 at Laurel, would be Page McKenney's likely next start.

California Chrome named horse of the year. What the heck is this speech? Someone get him off the stage.

What happened here? Absolutely bizarre.

Somebody have a little too much to drink or something? I've always appreciated Chrome's talent, but I've never cared for his owners. Both Perry and Steve (when he was still a partner) have always rubbed me the wrong way...

It was bizarre and eventually music was played in the background to give a hint which he thankfully took. He began with a description of the gel packets, located in some products, which contain the warning "Do not eat..." and compared it to something bewildering. He discussed this for what seemed to be in excess of two minutes. From there it went downhill. He mentioned a recent article which said he lived in California but the writer was unaware he relocated to another state. He also discussed how a next door neighbor was interviewed about him in a similar vein to when media seek neighbors of a murderer. You get the idea. It was an odd conclusion to the evening.

The speech is also on YouTube but here is an article on Paulick.

Yeah, an absolute shame that the evening had to end on that note. Might as well have been something straight out of the Twilight Zone. The awkward shuffling and confused expressions of those on the stage with him said it all... feel horrible for them all. Like Paulick infers, can only imagine what Art's had to deal with and put up with for over the past 5 years but it couldn't have been easy at all.

Baffert wanted to avoid the outside post and now has the rail. The talent of Chrome should be enough to handle the outside but that isn't the ideal post. These are the post positions for the Pegasus after Monday's draw (a more detailed post will be made when other info is provided):

Here are the official post positions:

  1. Arrogate (Mike Smith) 7-5
  2. Prayer for Relief (Florent Geroux) 50-1
  3. Neolithic (John Velazquez) 30-1
  4. Noble Bird (Julien Leparoux) 25-1
  5. War Story (Antonio Gallardo) 50-1
  6. War Envoy (Luis Saez) 50-1
  7. Shaman Ghost (Jose Oritz) 20-1
  8. Semper Fortis (Tyler Gaffalione) 50-1
  9. Keen Ice (Javier Castellano) 12-1
  10. Breaking Lucky (Luis Contreras) 25-1
  11. Eragon (Edgar Prado) 50-1
  12. California Chrome (Victor Espinoza) 6-5
  • Alternates for the race can only take the place of the ownership group for whom they are running.
    13. Stanford (for Arrogate)
    14. Sea Rave (for Breaking Lucky)
    15. Madefromlucky (for California Chrome)

I have been impressed by this runner since his first race. Still very early in his career. Owned in part by Bill Parcells.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Bavaro, a winner sprinting in both of his starts, finalized preparations for his two-turn debut when he breezed five furlongs in 1:00.69 over the Belmont Park training track Sunday. Bavaro is scheduled to start in Saturday’s $100,000 Gander Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds at a mile and 70 yards.

He's out of his league here, well, they all are compared to Arrogate and Chrome, but it
'll be interesting to see if Noble Bird can break well, which seems to be a coin flip at best, and set the early pace in the Pegasus. The distance still gives me some pause, but leaning towards Arrogate to knock off Chrome again.

Bob Baffert wanted to avoid the outside post and now has the rail. The talent of California Chrome should be enough to handle the outside but that isn't the ideal post.

Bob Baffert has just 17 lifetime starts at Gulfstream and none since 2007. I don't know how many wins but it could be as low as two and none since 2001.

These are the post positions for the Pegasus after Monday's draw.

===============

Capsules for each runner:
1. Arrogate (trainer Bob Baffert, jockey Mike Smith, 7-5 odds): Baffert's latest gem emerged late as a 3-year-old with a record-setting win in the Travers Stakes setting up the stunner in the November Breeders' Cup Classic, which propelled him to winning the Longines World's Best Racehorse award for 2016. The dream rematch with California Chrome came about in December when Juddmonte Farms, headed by Sheikh Khalid Abdullah purchased the entry from Coolmore Partnership. Smith will be looking to add another crowning achievement to a Hall of Fame career that includes a record 25 wins in the Breeders' Cup.

2. Prayer for Relief (Dale Romans, Florent Geroux, 50-1): The 9-year-old long shot has earned more than $2 million in a 45-race career that began under Baffert. He won six stakes races from ages 3 to 5 but hasn't come home first since 2013. Jeff Weiss, a Miami real estate mogul, is hoping for some magic in partnership with Zayat Stables, which ended the 37-year Triple Crown drought with American Pharoah in 2015.

3. Neolithic (Todd Pletcher, John Velazquez, 30-1): One of two Pletcher-trained entries, the 4-year-old has won both of his starts at Gulfstream, including a nine-length runaway in an allowance race Dec. 16 when he went 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.58. He carries the hopes of Starlight Racing, co-managed by Jack Wolf, also CEO of the Pegasus Cup.

4. Noble Bird (Mark Casse, Julien Leparoux, 25-1): The 6-year-old has seven wins, including the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs in 2015, and earnings of just over $1 million in 20 starts. This will be his first at Gulfstream. He is a front-runner, and will do so on behalf of a partnership that includes John Oxley, 80, a long-time prominent figure in polo in Palm Beach County whose prime achievement in racing was campaigning 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos.

5. War Story (Jorge Navarro, Antonio Gallardo, 50-1): This is one of the most intriguing entries, initiated by Michigan native Dan Schafer, a 33-year-old owner of several Jet's Pizza franchises in the Midwest who has never owned a racehorse but is a long-time racing fan. He put up the $1 million and eventually entered into a partnership with Loooch Racing Stables for War Story, a gelding who last month won the Queens County Stakes at Aqueduct.

6. War Envoy (Craig Dollase, Luis Saez, 50-1): The 5-year-old bay is winless in his past eight starts — 18 of 21 have come on turf. He had some second- and third-place finishes in Ireland and England. The entry is a return to racing for the father-son team of Mick Ruis Sr. and Mick Ruiz Jr., a former trainer and jockey who left the sport for success with a company repairing U.S. Navy vessels in San Diego.

7. Shaman Ghost (Jimmy Jerkens, José Ortiz, 20-1): This is Gulfstream Park owner Frank Stronach's entry. The 5-year-old Shaman Ghost is a son of Stronach's 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. He upset heavily favored Frosted in the Woodward Stakes in September.

8. Semper Fortis (Doug O'Neill, Tyler Gaffalione, 50-1): Canadian owner Paul Reddam was at the pinnacle of racing in 2012 when I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and again in 2016 when Nyquist gave him another Derby win. This horse, a 4-year-old, is not in that class, still in search of his first stakes win, though he did finish second in three stakes races in 2016. Gaffalione, a native of Davie, was the 2015 Eclipse Award winner as outstanding apprentice jockey.

9. Keen Ice (Todd Pletcher, Javier Castellano, 12-1): The 5-year-old's claim to fame is defeating American Pharoah in the 2015 Travers stakes. Pletcher began training him last year before he rallied from off the pace to third in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He'll run for a partnership headed by Ronald and Jerry Frankel, whose theatre productions have won nine Tony Awards.

10. Breaking Lucky (Reade Baker, Luis Contreras, 25-1): The original stakeholder was Dean Reeves, whose Mucho Macho Man won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2013. He has joined in a partnership with five other groups including West Point Thoroughbreds, which has trained horses for Florida Panthers owner Vinnie Viola. This 5-year-old could be a factor, having won the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes at Woodbine in 2016.

11. Eragon (Laura Wohlers, Edgar Prado, 50-1): The 6-year-old has three Group 1 wins in his native Argentina but will be racing for the first time in North America. Owner Jim McIngvale, known for insisting his horses run drug free, had intended to enter his Breeders' Cup Sprint champion Runhappy, but he was retired to stud.

12. California Chrome (Art Sherman, Victor Espinoza, 6-5): This will be the swan song for one of the most popular racehorses in recent years, the 2014 and 2016 Eclipse Horse of the Year. The 6-year-old chestnut is already the richest North American-race thoroughbred with more than $14.5 million in lifetime earnings. Claiming the $7 million winner's share would make him the all-time leader, surpassing the $19 million of Japan's Orfevre.

Songbird's schedule...

Songbird jogged at Santa Anita on Tuesday and Wednesday and will slowly return to full training in coming weeks for a 2017 campaign geared toward the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 3 at Del Mar.

“We’re going to take it slow,” Hollendorfer said. “I’m not being pressured to make any certain race, and that’s well-appreciated.”

Owned by Rick Porter, Songbird was beaten for the first time in her career in her last start, a nose loss to Beholder in a thrilling running of the BC Distaff last November at Santa Anita. Beholder, who has since been retired, was the champion older female of 2016, her fourth championship.

Songbird was the champion 2-year-old filly of 2015 and champion 3-year-old filly of 2016. She has won 11 of 12 starts and earned $3,712,000.

Hollendorfer said Songbird’s 2017 season could be a mix of races in Southern California and at tracks on the East Coast.

“There are a lot of races we’d like to run in,” he said. “Mr. Porter has some races he wants to run in back east and we’ll try to accomplish that goal.”

Aqueduct (New York):
  • It seemed to be a day for closers and outside runners.
  • In race 4, Cornelio Velasquez won on a 20-1 shot in a similar fashion.
  • In race 8, there was a Godolphin runner who had an incredible burst of energy in the last 1/8th mile of the race. It was staggering. Keep an eye on the horse, named Indulgent, who is now 3-for-4 lifetime.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • In the opener, the winner paid $61.
  • In the second race, Javier Castellano's 4-to-5 shot was scratched at the gate. The double paid $203.
  • In race 3, the $2 Pick 3 returned $3,443.
  • In race 9, Peru, off since August and trained by turf master Christophe Clement, raced in the US for the first time after nine starts in England and looked mighty impressive in victory. Julien Leparoux won on his first ride of the day.

Santa Anita (California):
  • A nasty spilled caused Drayden Van Dyke to be removed from the track via ambulance. Hoping for the best. (edit: broken arm).

^It seems that everyone is touting the 1-12 in some form with or without gimmicks wagering. It is understandable considering their past performances. Some bettors are doing multiple show bets with the hope the 1 and/or 12 run out of the money. However, I expect the handle should add to some very beneficial offerings in other races this day.

January 27, 2017

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 2: One of the lengthiest delays from a starting gate scratch I recall. It took 22 minutes after the original post time to start the race.
  • Race 9: Javier Castellano excels in big races and seemingly better when he isn't the overwhelming pick. Today, he had a 9-2 morning line favorite that seemed to offer some value though he went off 2-1. A terrific stretch duel with Miguel Vasquez but Castellano lost by a flared nostril. The Eclipse Award winner for Jockey of the Year needs to find a way to win a race like that.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Cornelio Velasquez can still ride at least at this level, New York winter racing. He won on a first-time starter for Linda Rice at 6-to-5 in race 2.

Tampa Bay (Florida);
  • A $151.40 winner in race 4.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • A first time starter won and paid $131.60 in the 9th and final race.
