Playing '17 on Xbox One. Traded my ps4 so lost NHL18 and this is the first time i actually have found enjoyment in playing a previous NHL game. Anyway i created Petterson as a 75 ovr med elite and drafted him with Montreal #1. Next season he's playing on my 2nd line as an 81 ovr and in our first game of the season he picked up 3+3 for 6 points in a 10-3 win over Ottawa. Has anybody seen such a crazy debut in their GM's? His offensive awareness is at 88 and he has medium shooting stats with high level puck skills. (also snagged Dahlin as a med franchise dman #1 ovr)

Shoulda got one game in
So my PS3 decided to commit suicide on me and I can't continue my BeAGM in the 2024-25 season. So I guess I'll post what I had done up to the NHL regular season starting. I got through the month of October, finishing 10-1-1 and in a tie for 1st overall with Boston. But all in depth stats (point leaders, etc.) I didn't type out, so that info will be missing. But anyway...

Just bought the game today, have a few issues with it. I like that they skewed the overalls down, however it does not appear like they adjusted the trade value for those players. So now deadline players that should bring back decent value are rated as worthless. Also, what's with the sim? I updated the rosters and just went into a Franchise mode with that as the Avs GM. We are well on track to be a lottery team at the TDL. Well, this team then goes and wins every game and somehow ends up in the playoffs.

I dont understand the prospect progression. If you dont sign your drafted players right away there rating wont improve? Another example is I had Nico hischier for 5 seasons and his overall only went from a 78 to a 80 sometimes 82 then goes back down however in other gm modes I have ive looked at Hischier and hes at 88-89 quicker. If someone could tell me how prospect progression works it would help me out alot.

In progression someone stated contract length has something to do with it. Sign them to short term contracts. I have one guy as a 91 who is elite player. I’ve been a year at a time after. It could be he just busted as that happens in the game too.

Started a expansion draft with Vegas, the first two years the owner was very happy, but third year everything went to shit, failed all 3 goals and was 3rd last in the league (despite improving my team a lot in the off-season, idk) and apparently 1 bad season out of 3 was enough for the owner and he fired me.

Well i decided to take on the helm of Detroit after that, which was a good choice, they had 2 NHL ready medium elite potential wingers, and a young, but a good potential d core. (4 of them 79-81 ovr, but all were low top 4 potential at minimum, two of them are med top 4, and two veteran defenceman) and also managed to get a med elite 79 ovr sniper center with the 5th pick, so hopefully i can stay with Detroit without getting fired haha.

Detroits goaltending is abysmal though, 81ovr Howard and 82ovr Markstrom, and no good goalie prospects. (Highest is AHL starter potential),so i'm gonna have to look for a goalie if i want to compete.

Just starting GM mode right now. Can you really not see a player's total career stats? Please tell me I'm just looking in the wrong screen, otherwise that's ridiculous.

No, you can't.

Last year, EA had the common sense to finally introduce player stats that stretched back longer than the past 5 years.
But them adding a career stats total tally was apparently too much

What are some draft strategies that you guys employ?

I know EXACT potential means he will lock in at that potential, normally at medium or low.

But what about in the later rounds? What are some tips to draft well beyond rounds 1 and 2?

Though it’s not perfect, a lot of the time I find, when a player has been scouted at least once and is listed as “low top 9 F” or “low top 6 D”, they are usually a really good pick.

If they haven’t been scouted they are usually trash though.

Also if you see a “high elite” goalie, PICK HIM. I’ve only seen it twice but they’ve both been franchise goalies. Goalies are usually a good bet in general, especially in the second and third rounds. Lots of starter potential and elite potential, which can be good trade chips since their overalls are usually not that high.

So I have a couple of questions. I recently picked up playing NHL 16 on new gen and noticed a feature that wasn't there in previous games.

The game allows you to edit a player's position and even player type. It's been well established that based on player type, certain attributes will get favoured over others for player progression (eg. Snipers will favour shooting attributes, Playmakers will favour senses and puck skills, Power Forwards favour puck skills and physicality etc.).

So hypothetically, if I change a prospect's type from Playmaker to Sniper, does it mean he will from that point forward follow the development path of a Sniper, or will that player follow the default progression path? As an aside to this question, it seems that in the old-gen version of the games, Snipers and Playmakers produced more points compared to the other player types. Browsing through the top league scorers in my current game, that still seems to be the case. So in that situation, would a player produce more points if you changed his player type from Two-Way Forward to Sniper?

My second question concerns player development. The consensus seems to be that for optimal player development, the player needs to be placed in the role they are assigned to based on their ratings (eg 3rd line scorer, 2nd line, AHL top 2 etc.). How does the computer determine that you haven't violated this? Is it based on total playing minutes in a season?

Oh man this game is broken LOL.

Just finished year 1 in Vancouver. Boeser puts up 65 points, and is 13 points ahead of the next rookie in scoring.

Who wins Rookie of the Year? Bo Horvat, in his 4th NHL season.

How does the computer determine that you haven't violated this? Is it based on total playing minutes in a season?

1st question on player type - hypothetically, this is the way that player growth is meant to go. As with virtually every other aspect of Franchise mode though, it's not consistent. I had a Two-Way Forward with great defensive, skating, and physical categories, who just couldn't shoot the puck, so I changed him into a sniper at 21, to see if that could help his development. It barely did. I've seen other examples of Offensive Dmen changing to Two Way Dmen, and seeing results however. So, while it's inconsistent, it does seem to help.

2nd question on player growth - it's really hard to figure out, but it appears as though there's an XP "bank", and in order to a player to achieve XP from that bank there's a series of checks and balances (player role, player performance, statistical performance, team performance, morale, etc). If a player doesn't hit on one of those checks, it seems to slow down his growth a bit, but that XP is still available to earn later on (say, the next season). At least this is the way it appears on the surface.

I'd have Medium Elite players in the minors, not play an entire game for the entire season, still magically grow by 8-10 overall points in the offseason despite not playing at all for an entire year though, so as mentioned above, it's very inconsistent.

I do think the "inconsistency" in player growth is meant to be consistent, if that makes sense - if you think about the real NHL, beyond the top 3-5 prospects every year in the draft, many of them are relatively unknown, and we've seen many times a player get drafted pretty high, who doesn't pan out, or a player who gets drafted a little later, with less hype, all of a sudden progress beyond expectation. I think this is the sort of thing that EA is trying to mimick; that prospects, beyond a few at the top of each draft class, are very unknown quantities.

Just wanted to provide a quick thumbs up to your post structure - it's easy to read, and isn't a blob of boring text/numbers.

My buddy and I have been playing as Buffalo the past few weeks. We can not for the life of us get our top line to produce.

We are a good team and everyone is slotted into their appropriate roles. All three of our top line players are supposed to be on that line based on role. One is an 88 OVR TWF, one is a 93 OVR Franchise PLY, the other is an 87 overall SNP. They just aren't producing among the league leaders (we've had this issue for a few seasons and have had a lot of turnover on that line as a result). Our leading scorer is one of our second liners, and all three of my top line guys is hovering around .5 ppg

Any tips to make our top line produce while simming?
