Long Island is filled with NIMBY types. Who on Earth want would to destroy the closest thing to heaven this world has to offer? :eyeroll:

Obviously, and absurdly, I can't get political in a disapproved way on this essentially political thread. But, the irony of building an arena in a neighborhood filled with people Hempstead residents didn't want moving into Hempstead shouldn't be lost on you, or anyone else with a brain.

I heard opening the Saratoga meet 1 month early and hosting the Belmont Stakes during the renovation period is on the table.

I don’t think Aqueduct has the ability to host a major event anymore given the reduced size of the grandstand there.

I'll also go as far to say that if you were NYRA and you have your annual crown jewel of a race, would you really want to be showing it off to the horse racing community by hosting at Aqueduct? I thought the plan was to get rid of the track there after Belmont was able to be year-round and make it a casino anyways?

I know all still speculation, but interesting to see how far an Isles arena affects other interests. For example, if the Belmont is relocated for the construction, the broadcast, watched by millions, will have to mention how the New York Islanders are building a brand new arena. Cool stuff.

I think that's the plan. Aqueduct this year turned their winterized track into a second turf course and winterized the main track. That would enable AQU to hold enough turf races of various configurations to carry racing through while Belmont is renovated. Saratoga picks up Belmont's racing dates from late May until after Labor Day and AQU picks up the remainder of Belmont's dates Once the BEL renovation (with winterization) is completed NYRA's next move would be close Aqueduct and turn it over to the casino.

It's going to be a hoot if the Belmont renovation includes lights for night racing.

While Amazon rally at Elmont last Sunday was a circus, the following allegations will be tougher to deal with.

Belmont Park development would greatly impact village: Floral Park mayor - The Island Now

'
By Rebecca Klar

December 6, 2017

Development at Belmont Park would affect everything the Village of Floral Park does, Mayor Dominick Longobardi said at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Longobardi and Deputy Mayor Kevin Fitzgerald attended a meeting on Nov. 28 with the Empire State Development Corp. where development plans were discussed, Fitzgerald said.
There will be a public meeting on 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at Elmont High School, hosted by state Sens. Elaine Phillips, Todd Kaminsky and Leroy Comrie...

Fitzgerald said the board has reached out to the Islanders only to be informed that the team owners cannot speak to village officials while the application is pending.
“We are asking them once again to meet with us so they can listen directly to our concerns on how an arena can have significant adverse effects on the daily lives of our residents of Floral Park,” Fitzgerald said...'

Again the NIMBY'S, county, town have zero say on this. Which is why Belmont is the only logical place for the Islanders to build. As long as no local taxpayer dollars are being used there is no way the locals can stop this. That's why they came up with the term "listening session" not public comment to be put in the record, no official hearing, but a "listening session" basically a dog and pony show. Now this coming session will be basically a courtesy "this is what we are building" session. Good for the Islanders and there fans, shove it down their throats.

Well we know Butchie will be in heaven. And imagine if the Isles ever make the Stanley Cup Finals and there's a home game after the Belmont Stakes. All Olczyk would have to do is walk across the grounds from the track to the arena:yo:

When the Belmont thing started, that was the first thing I thought of, I would not survive such a day.

I think we can all agree to hope Edzo beats the hell out of cancer so he can host both.

mark my words, it is not going to take 20 months from the shovels in the ground, every arena I have read is taking a minimum of 2 1/2 years

Incorrect. Little Caesers arena technically started demolition July 11, 2015. They needed to impolde 3 buildings, clean up and build the foundation. Belmont has no physical building demo

Also a tidbit. They actually had to change plans, and take down so of what they had already built, as the Pistons announced they wanted to move there too. They had to reconfigure the ice plumbing too

Little Caesers was also assisted in financing by Oak View, and is a member of Arena Alliance.

They have already booked the 1st round of 2018 and 2020 NCAA Tournaments, Frozen 4, numerous UFC events, etc. This is why this partnership is necessary and needed

Once Belmont track is winterized, Aqueduct raceway is being taken down, and I believe they are trying to put a hotel there

T-Mobile in Las Vegas was built in 23 months, but that also included time for demolishing existing buildings, which isn't a factor here. 20 months is aggressive, but doable, I'd think.

Vegas also has perfect weather for that type of stuff (if you ignore the blasting furnace from April - November) LOL

(just saying its very dry)

How fast they get anything done is probably a function of how much they want to pay skilled tradespeople and deal with unions. Right now employment in that sector is super tight.

Money talks -- lets get some of those lazy union workers going -- and then a couple of us from HF Isles to oversee the job, drink, and make witty comments. That should do the trick..
