Still worried about this, he had 2 seasons above 40 points.. but he’s just gonna keep getting better right?? Even into his late 30’s..
Ranks #20 in NHL total goals over last three years. That places him in good company and in a group that is hard to replace and thus tends to get paid.

Nope, looks like garbage. This is the reason i was so worried he was going to get 8M + extension as his play never made me think he was a star in this league. He's so inconsistent and I don't him as a guy even at the top of his game as a guy who can take over a game. I thought his extension was good value though for a 20-30 goal guy, but right now he's playing worse than I've ever seen from him. He looks completely disinterested, Josh Anderson looks like a superstar compared to Atkinson right now.

So those two seasons in a row where he had 40 points – if he had scored one more point in those seasons, would you still be making this arbitrary argument?

He has scored at a very consistent rate throughout his career.

Unless Cam is totally mentally defeated - which I don't think he is - I believe he will regain his goal scoring touch sonnet rather than later. Right now he is pressing way to much. Likewise I am confident that Breadman will go on a goal scoring streak to compliment his assist numbers.

I wish I could say the same for Foligno, Jenner and Dubi (when he returns), but I am not confident they will consistently score goals. Same for Wennberg.

Footnote: How Jenner ever netted 30 is one of the great mysteries of hockey.

Its called "player usage".

There are "roles" on a team. Its not just "Go out there and score" every shift.

There is only so much ice time to give away. There are only so many goals teams can score in a year.

Offensive opportunities change year by year, for teams and "lines" or individual players.

Crazy I know, but playing regularly on the PP bumps up your offensive numbers.

Cam and Boone have not been good this year. To a lesser extent neither has Foligno.

That cannot be said for Dubinsky.

OK, hot shot.

How did Boone's usage change from his 30 goal year to last season's 18? He had half as much power time, but scored no goals vs.9 (30 goal year). Perhaps his ineffectiveness on the power play changed his usage. Still, His 18 would have only been 22 had he scored at the same rate on the PP (which he didn't).

His shooting percentage dropped from 13.3% to 8.5%.

His 30 goal year was a fluke. Deal with it.

Boone Jenner is a "30 goal scorer" the same way Josh Anderson is a "30 goal scorer".

Hopefully Cam Atkinson ISN'T....

I think his game tonight was better. However, he still doesn't look anything like the player we've seen in years past. He's obviously not past his prime, but I wonder how he would be playing if we waited a bit on this extension.

For the record, I still think it's a good move keeping him around.

Does anyone realize how underpaid Cam has been for his production since his ELC expired.

2013-14 $1,125,000 (21g, 19a, 40pts)
2014-15 $1,175,000 (22g, 18a, 40pts)
2015-16 $2,500.000 (27g, 26a, 53pts)
2016-17 $3,500,000 (35g, 27a, 62pts)

Now there are so many questions about him because he's had a rough start to the season. He's putting a lot of pressure on himself to live up to the new contract. He just needs to go out and play. He's been better the past couple games with Wennberg.

I will say I was alarmed when I saw he will be paid $7,375,000 in actual salary for years 2018-19 and 2019-20. But once those 2 years are up, he will be but 30 years old with 5 years left at $5,275,000 actual salary. With the salary cap going up as much as it has, and with another possible expansion team on the horizon, his contract even under his Modified NTC should still be movable if need be.

Unfortunately the "rough start" has spilled into half the season. That, for me, is concerning. Granted the rest of the team is a tire fire as well...

To all who say its just a slump, I agree but as X points out it is now closing in on a half season of slump.

I don't care about his contract. I just want him to play a more combative feisty game like he used to.

Hes been pretty bad since the start of the last season's playoffs. I really like him as a player and as a person and I hope he starts playing better, like we all know he can.

5 points in 10 games to start the season isn't terrible...

No, and he even scored the game winner like two nights ago. But it's obvious enough to me that he's not currently playing like the complete player he used to be. Two years with Panarin turned him into a floater. He used to fight for his pucks, now he stands around and waits for them.

So give him some time to adjust to the new circumstances.

He was noticeably awful and the biggest disappointment in the Boston series and looks like he has picked up where he left off this season. Forward group is pretty young this season and he's supposed to be one of the guys carrying the load. Instead he's flailing badly. Not good.
