NOTES: Montreal got back into the series with authority in front of a roaring home crowd. While Newsy Lalonde and Boom Boom Geoffrion made huge contributions offensively, it was Rogie Vachon that earned the loudest ovations from the Montreal faithful. The Wanderers had been searching for a way to keep Wayne Gretzky from beating them... on this night Vachon decided to make their search easy. Gretzky fired 7 shots on net while setting up others for countless chances. None of it worked. Vachon made 38 saves for the shut out. Geoffrion continued to provide clutch scoring with two more on the night. Sprage Cleghorn tried to inspire Lada by getting into a fight with Lester Patrick, but Patrick held his own and only inspired the crowd to futher heights. Lada leads the series 3-2, but Montreal has all the momentum heading back onto the road for game 6. Harry Lumley was pulled after the second period and John Vanbiesbrouck allowed 3 goals in 15 shots in the third period.

NOTES: What needs to be said? A thrill ride of a game with lead changes and drama. Gretzky's first period goal was the first Lada goal in nearly four periods. An outburst of scoring by Montreal's top two lines in the second period gave them a crowd deflating lead. Newsy Lalonde was a force on the ice for the Wanderers. However, as it has been all series, Wayne Gretzky put Lada on his back for a dynamic third period come back. He set up Cook and Bobrov to tie the game before Michel Goulet took the lead back for Montreal. Finally, Gretzky himself scored with two minutes left in the game to give Lada new life. Two teams that traded goals like they were candy couldn't find a goal in the first overtime. Both Lumley and Vachon made heroic saves in preserving the tie. Mid-way through the second overtime Coach Tommy Ivan sent Gretzky out with Rich Preston and Don Marcotte. The odd move proved to be a master stroke as the Great One skated in around behind the net andfound Preston sneaking in behind him on the left side of the net. A cross crease pass and tap in goal sent the Lada crowd into a frenzy as this first year team secured a wild victory in a wild series. Tomas Sandstrom returned to the line-up for Lada and drew two penalties including one leading to the Bobrov PP goal.
