It's that time again.

Might as well get my letters sorted out. There are lots of all-time great captains who will come up as ATD depth players, but I can't imagine them superseding any of these guys, when it comes to importance to the team.

Sidney Crosby
Bill Cook
Bill Gadsby
Valeri Vasiliev
Ron Francis

I've only got one player without a record of wearing the C, and that's because Phillips comes from the Jurassic Period. I can probably eliminate Gadsby, who doesn't have the tenure of Francis or the winning pedigree of the other 3. Does Sid's place as the team's offensive leader get him the nod? Or do one of the others have something on in, in terms of gravitas or some other je ne sais quoi quality?

Crosby for me.Or Vasiliev, I'm not sure.

Edit1: Bill Cook was a great captain, but he wasn't the greatest playoff performer.

Edit2:Two years ago I wouldn't have chosen Crosby, but by now...

Edit3:Oh I'm out of there.

Edit4:I still go with Crosby.

It goes in some order of Vasiliev >= Crosby >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Rest

I'd go with Vasiliev personally..

Probably that Vasiliev was a great captain for longer than Crosby, who wasn't what he is today as a leader even if he had the C in his younger days.

jarek might be right.

Same question above about letters

Taylor, Conacher, Schriner, Ullman, Harvey, Goodfellow and Johnson

I know Harvey deserves one, but does anyone else?

Captain - Crosby. Assistant - Cook.

Francis can be 2nd assistant for now, unless you find someone better for it. Edit - maybe Vasiliev. Forgot he was captain of the National Team for a brief period between Mikhailov and Fetisov

Maurice Richard or Milt Schmidt for captain?

I assume The Rocket is a no-brainer? Or is it..?

Schmidt is quite possibly the better “leader” I would think, no?

I would lean towards Schmdit, because I prefer my captain to not be a loose cannon. Rocket needs a letter of some sort though.

What do you all think about the possibility of Joe Sakic playing the point of the powerplay at the ATD level? @overpass ?

He spent a lot of his career playing the point on the powerplay, so he should be fine as an ATD pointman. It was mostly before my time and in the Western conference, so I didn't really see him, but I remember he had that rep. I'm sure you can find quotes, and his PP scoring stats were very good.

The table below shows the on-ice power play goals for by position on his team -- specifically the percentage of PPGF by forwards. Anything much over 60% means you have a forward playing the point. It looks like a forward (i.e. Sakic) generally played the point for Quebec/Colorado, except when Rob Blake was on the team.

Sakic would be fine on the point for me.

Just for fun, here's a short video where you see him there, making a very slick advance towards the net behind everyone's back:

Maybe not the place for this, but here's another goal by Sakic against Brodeur.Sakic faked the slapshot just so Stevens gets in front of him, so he could use him as a screen.Absolutely brilliant.

Did you really have to bring this up?

Yes, I still remember this goal

Sundin broke in a right-winger and played the position for the Leafs in 1995-1996. I'm not sure I want him in that role, though. Like a lot of offensively talented players, he wasn't very good defensively early on in his career when he played the position.

Then he moved to centre in '93 and led the Nordiques in scoring, outscoring Sakic that particular season. He was +21 in '93 (second-best on the team).

With TOR, he again played RW in 1995-1996 and led the team in scoring and posted the second-best plus/minus rating on the team.

I think XXX - Thornton - Sundin could work very well in theory. Joe dominates possession and Sundin had the ability to drive to the net and also score from long-range and pretty much from all over the offensive zone. Like Thornton, he could hold onto the puck in the offensive zone and protect it well.

From a defensive standpoint, maybe I'd be more comfortable with Sundin at centre on line three. He did develop into a C who played in all situations and could provide offense without compromising a team defensively.

I do not remember Sundin playing RW at all in 1995-96. Luckily, this forum is loaded with Leafs fans, so we should have confirmation.

As I remember it, the Leafs tinkered with their lineup regularly from Sundin's arrival up until Gilmour was traded to New Jersey, in an effort to get Gilmour going.

Should i stick both Bentleys on the point on the same unit or do i need a D to act as a safety valve?

Ohhh... Tough one. They played together on the point IRL and were great at it, but I'd have to think that at this level, you're begging for a SHG against without at least one D at the point

Well, you are going to be up against pretty shifty PKers.

I'll go with the safer option, and put Clancy along with Max on PP1. Doug can man the point on PP2.

In regards to Sundin, he never got any recognition for awards at RW, nor did he ever finish top-10 in scoring at RW. In the meantime, you have guys like Malone who led the league in points while playing LW, D. Bentley being a 2nd AST C, Clapper a 2nd AST RW etc and if you were to stick them in the aforementioned positions, they would rightfully be criticized despite showing that they were capable of playing the position at an elite level. Sundin was never even an elite RW, so I would be extremely wary of sticking him at RW.
