Around the NHL: Is it too early to scoreboard watch?

I thought it would be nice to have a place to discuss the going on's around the NHL...

Todays bad news, LA beat the Flyers 4-1

The sort of good, San Jose lost to Edmonton... I'm not willing to write off Edmonton.

The actual good news, Anaheim lost to New Jersey, another team that is always a threat.

Sometimes we have been using GDTs to discuss recent results as they relate to VGK.

That said, I think a permanent thread “sticky” would be nice to discuss events as they relate to intradivisional rivalries.

So Toronto creamed Carolina, in Toronto's 100th anniversary game.

I heard the Islanders are getting their in Belmont, official word supposed to come tomorrow from what I've heard, but it's leaked out anyway... which is good, I like the Islanders

And the other Pacific Division game to keep an eye on is the Ducks @ Rangers.... Ducks on the back end of a back to back so hopefully they are tired.

Light schedule today the NHL must have known we would all need time to recover from yesterdays game.

Flames Vs Blues,

It would be good if the flames lose just to keep serperation in the division, but a regulation lose for the Blues keeps us first in the West... so go Flames.

Scores to watch tonight:

Pacific:

Mighty Ducks @ Isles
StL @ Edm
Avs @ LAK
Van @ SJS

Affecting our Western Conference Standing:

StL @ Edm
Avs @LAK
Carolina @ Nsh
WPG @ BOS

I am honestly not rooting for sweeping failure in the top of the West tonight. If VGK succeeds, it still won't be sitting atop the Western Conference permanently with no standings drops -- They just need to keep winning and they'll be right back on top of whoever wins tonight. Leading by default is not the goal.

So at this point if I'm not mistaken only LA is left to unseat us, St Louis lost to Edmonton, Winnipeg failed to get the win to put them ahead of us, and Nashville lost to Carolina.

While leading by default is not the goal... it certainly helps :)

Not sad at all. We have three games in hand and the third game we play from now is @lak. If we can't beat them, we don't deserve to be in 1st.

I was hoping they were going to give us an early Christmas Present, I mean 3 games in hand is nice and all but #1 in the West is #1 in the West :laugh::laugh::naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty::sarcasm:

And LA win... sad lol

Both the Mucks and the Kings were losing in the third period, but somehow managed to get a win (and two points) in OT. And the Oilers aren't dead, yet. Every game (especially intradivisional games) will become increasingly important.

Not alot happening today.

Wild play the Cats, though this doesn't really effect us,

Flames play Montreal, again doesn't really effect us, but a divisional lose would be a divisional lose

And hopefully the Yotes wear down the Caps for us. :)

I was watching the Kings v Sharks in the third period. The Sharks were up 2-0. (The Sharks eventually won, by the way.)

At first, I was unequivocally rooting for the Sharks. VGK tied for first place with the Kings (with a couple games to play) is nice. That said, if the Sharks win, they will be solidly in third place, only six points behind VGK. (The healthier Ducks are now only eight points behind VGK.)

I am not sure how many wild card teams will come from the Pacific, however. So, I am not sure which team to root for. Only three (and probably at most four) teams will come from the Pacific. Maybe it's better to get a greater separation from the fourth place team than to win the division, if playoffs are a real goal.

Who thought we would be having this dilemma in September?

(Looking at the standings below, it's hard to believe that VGK and the Kings lead the entire Western Conference in points. VGK, however, have the fewest games played.)

Well LA lost. so we lead the Division, and are tied in points for first in the West with St Louis with 4 games in hand and with LA 3 games in hand

The key is just root for a regulation win. This learned from watching a lot of these races. A two point game is the real win.

I think in the end the Sharks will push in front of the Kings. Whether they go in front of VGK is up to how the team plays on the road. Sharks have been a bit unlucky so far in some ways while Kings numbers suggest they have been the opposite. I do give Kings credit for getting so many points on the road, but we'll see if that holds up in the second half.
