If we don't scoreboard watch, then how can we enjoy the pain of being a Hurricanes fan on days when they aren't playing?

Rooting for Dallas and Tampa Bay tonight. They are the better teams in their respective matchups, so naturally, they will not be helping the Hurricanes.

Don't forget San Jose. The Hurricanes are only 3 behind the Red Wings.

Then tomorrow it's Dallas (again) and Colorado and...oh **** the Leafs and Caps play. What's better long term? Someone do the math on it.

Rinse repeat for the next 3 months.

There are too many weeks left in the season for me to handle the fatigue of scoreboard watching. I'll pick up on it if we ever actually get into the playoff bracket.

Probably doesn't help that we were actually in a better position to make the playoffs a month ago, though it didn't feel like it. Was tied for 8th with the Rangers.

Philly grabbed 21 points in the past last month. Everyone else we're competing for a playoff spot for grabbed somewhere between 12-14, including us.

I'll worry about it after the Olympic break.. If we're still in range by then and I think we will be.. it'll be fun last 20 games.

If we're going to stress out like fools and call middle of the season games 'must win' or 'huge', and declare seasons over because the Canes are 5 points out, there's no reason not to scoreboard watch. We've already crossed the absurdity line, might as well embrace it fully.

Prettymuch backs up what I've been saying since the implementation of the Shootout... it should not count for as many points as a Regulation or OT Win. There's three solutions to that:

1 - 3 point system: 3 point Regulation/OT Wins, 2 point Shootout Wins, 1 point Shootout/OT Loss, 0 point Regulation Loss

2 - 3 point system where you drop overtime go right to the shootout: 3 point Regulation Win, 2 point, Shootout Win, 1 point Shootout Loss, 0 point Regulation Loss

3 - only use the SO as a playoff tiebreaker and treat it like a tie from a points perspective: current points setup, but SO wins are only worth one point in the standings. Make it the tiebreaker after ROW which means it still has importance in the grand scheme of things, but the emphasis will be on winning in regulation or OT rather then trying to Capital your way in.

Not gonna lie, the day felt slightly brighter this morning waking up with the Canes sitting in a playoff spot.

I know that feel. Non hockey people (ie coworkers) ask me "With so much time left in the season why does it matter right now..." If I could just make them feel what it's like to be a Hurricanes fan for a minute. They'd know.

I think the league needs a system that makes the shootout less important and at the same time takes away the incentive to stall games into overtime for the extra point. Might be a little unconventional but I would like to see a 5-point system:

5 points for a regulation win
4 for an overtime win
3 for a shootout win
2 for a shootout loss
1 for an overtime loss
0 for a regulation loss

This way the winning team gets bonus points for more legit wins. If they need 4v4 OT to win they lose a point, and they lose another point if it goes to the shootout. The losing team gets bonus points for holding on longer which keeps teams from going all-in trying to score late in regulation or overtime.

I am making a Google Drive spreadsheet with the teams in the race, GP, points, and the next 7 games for each of the teams. I'm going to do it in seven game blocks.

If anybody would like access to it to keep good tabs on the standings and where our competition stands, DM me your gmail and I'll share it with you.

I say keep the current OT/SO system (since 10-minute OT + SO doesn't seem to fit time constraints), but make it so no extra points are awarded for the SO. Instead, the number of SO wins will be used as a tiebreaker to make the playoffs, after points and ROW.

I kinda love this.

I like that, but I would make a minor tweak by swapping the 1 and 2 point categories, so you get 2 for an OTL and 1 for a SO loss. I understand your rational for rewarding a team for hanging on longer, but I think that would cause the same issue you erased above, where instead of stalling for OT, they'd stall for the SO. Keeps the system consistent and incentivizes a quicker end to the game.

Forget anyone outside of hardcore fans being able to interpret anything about the standings.

The Hurricanes enter tonight's game with a record of 14-2-0-5-2-10.

Might as well just go to some kind of crazy BCS-style computer system.

The problem with doing it like that is that teams that suck in shootouts, like a team we all know, would actually be better off to intentionally lose in OT and not risk losing another point in the shootout. The incentive to try to win in OT is that you can pick up 4 points instead of 3 at best in the shootout.

The records would get a little bit messier but in the end the only number that really matters is points, not any of this "ROW" business. The alternative is the current system where a shootout win goes into the same column as a regulation win which I think most people disagree with.
