I'm going to assume you meant to say "relative" and I'll agree with that. Like many other discussions here we'd have to agree on definition of terms (hockey knowledge in this case) before any meaningful discussion.

LOL.
No idea why autocorrect did that

But yeah, hockey knowledge branches off into a lot of other things. Stats, player assessment/predictions, etc... one person might be incredibly smart with one thing and incredibly dumb with another thing.

Coach Trainer GM President D C Forward G Ref Commissioner Union Rep League Lawyer and a whole lot more... including Psychologist, Dietitian, Chef Media Rep etc...

There is an awful lot to hockey, saying 2 is generous. Each part is totally hockey related and it takes a specialist save for maybe the Chef.

As long as the guys running the team are a 5 (or above). I'll wait until after the playoffs and pending UFA time to see how this one goes. Both the team and this poll.

An interesting thing to point out is the amount of people saying that babcock is an idiot, worst coach, delusional. I wonder are these people talking out of their asses or would they actually rate babcock a 2 or 3 while rating themselves 4?

I dont know a thing about advanced stats. Besides that, i voted 4

I voted 4 also. Hockey metrics I'm not sold on the way i am baseball. Hockey you play offense and defense in one shift. I think baseball is easier because you're either in the field or on offense. Easier to analyze you. Also baseball isn't as much a team sport as hockey. Hockey is as much about your teammates as it is yourself. I use the eye test in hockey much more than baseball. Maybe that's why i'm only a 4...lol

4

I take .5 off for not fully grasping the advanced stats yet, getting better though

I take another .5 off because I am not nearly up to date with the NHL draft like I used to be.

Babcock is absolutely a 5 when you consider philosophy, tactics, and his pulse on the game.... He’s criticized for his personnel decisions at times, but I see that as stubbornness and being partial to a certain type of player rather than any reflection on his hockey mind.

Many people would classify as 5 in their respective professions... being human will always have them imperfect, though.

Great question... I'd like to hear the answer to that question.

Since its a self assessment, "self" can decide what Hockey knowledge means to them.

Both seems like the obvious choice.

I'm a much bigger Leafs fan than I am an NHL fan. I pretty much never miss a Leaf game, and i pretty much never watch a game that doesn't involve the Leafs (playoffs are the exception).

Obviously, because I follow the Leafs closely and they are in the NHL, I do have knowledge of the league...but if a team has not played the Leafs there is a pretty good chance I haven't seen them play.

I'd rather watch Netflix than some generic Sharks vs. Hurricanes NHL game.

I'd say inbetween a 3 and 4. I know all the players, but don't know the depth. (talking league wide) I know the CBA better than most. I don't know the minor leagues or the international leagues and the future talent in general. Tend to rely on highlight packages.

Im with you in between 3/4. I know almost everything about the leafs/marlies and a pretty good amount about all the other NHL teams. When it comes to prospects and depth players of other teams though, whew i could honestly care less.

I also feel like i know the rules fairly well compared to most (obviously not goaltender interference though)

OK just for fun I'll take a shot. I'll give myself a 1. I've played a fair bit of hockey in the past and watch almost every Leaf game so feel like I have a pretty good grasp as far as a high level view of the team goes. I watch on TV though so there's plenty I miss that I might catch live (although instant replay does have it's benefits so there's a tradeoff there). I tend to mostly watch the team as a whole as opposed to keying in on individuals so I wouldn't rate myself very highly when it comes to player assessment. I also don't watch many games involving other teams (though I suspect that will change in this years playoffs) so I'm no authority when it comes to players on other teams. I hardly watch any games outside the NHL so I know next to nothing about junior players. I only know the most basic things about advanced stats although I feel like I have pretty good basic reasoning and logic skills and I'm pretty decent at solving puzzles etc. so I feel like I can usually tell good posts on the subject from bad ones but still, there are many posters here who's knowledge on the subject dwarfs mine. I'm also pretty dis-interested when it comes to things like the nuances of the CBA, salary cap, contract slots etc. And international hockey, forget about it. Anything outside of best-on-best tournaments I have no interest in (except for the WJC when I definitely try to catch some games). I probably don't see more than one or two Marlie games a year so my knowledge there is limited as well.

So overall, as a Leaf fan I think my knowledge is not too bad at all. Overall hockey though, not so much.

Edit - would only add that there are many more areas of hockey knowledge not even mentioned in this post and I don't know much about those areas either. :)
