Why? What do we gain by doing this?

Hope someone bites so Melnyk can save some $$$$$

Seriously. When's the last time someone put a player who is already in the AHL on waivers? What a joke of an organization. Melnyk HAS to sell.

EDIT: Nvm, didn't see that we signed O'Brien today.

Have to sign him to waive him : re: O'Brien still strange... Probably won't go anywhere.
I can't believe they could not move Oduya... Something must be happening imminently

We could be clearing roster spots for a trade.

Hypothetically, if we were to trade Karlsson and take back 2-3 guys with NHL contracts, then we'd need to make room for them on the NHL roster.

The Senators also waived veteran defenceman Johnny Oduya but that might simply be a move to help facilitate a trade.

Since Burrows has another year at $2.5 million left on his contract, it’s highly unlikely anybody would pick him up which would put his career in limbo. Yes, he’d be eligible to go to the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville but it’s doubtful that would happen because Burrows has been a good veteran for the team.

The reality is the Senators have decided to go younger and this is a decision that might force Burrows to consider retirement in the off-season. He could finish the year here and see only spot duty because the plan down the stretch is for the club to give young players every chance to play.

Oduya is terrible, why would anyone want him? Just run with whoever is next in line in your org over him.
That may be true for anyone who's seen him play recently but at this time of year vet D with intangibles are always worth something. Bonus points if you've won a cup.

is burrows trade + extension still a genius move?

It was a rental trade. He was good for us in the playoffs. The extension was bad. Dahlen is still far from making the NHL. Still not a bad trade. Why are to so obsessed with such a minor deal?

Many on HFSens were saying that Phaneuf was terrible, etc. It seems that LA fans are happy with him.

What people always forget is that it is a team game and not an addition of individual pieces. This season, Senators broke as a team while a team like Vegas made of unprotected players is at the top of the league.

Most individual players playing on the Senators this year got a bad « rep » but put them on a « functional » team (and also in a position to succeed) and they would look much better right away

Yeah I have been thinking of this. It should have been a pure rental trade, and it would have been cheaper to get Burrows as a rental, but the problem was that Burrows wouldn’t have waived, and wanted that extension to accept coming to Ottawa. That’s where Dorion should have backed up IMO, like accept that it was a « too expensive » option and go after someone cheaper to acquire and that you don’t have to re-sign

But it’s crazy how much it’s talked about. And I am also guilty here as I talked about it in several threads; but if Dahlen doesn’t come or succeed in the NHL, it will have been a lot of drama for a lot of nothing lol
