Grabovski was "close" to signing an extension before McPhee was axed. The speculation that you had to bring in Kulemin as well is pretty silly when you look at that. Maybe that was a term for other teams, but it's pretty clear he was willing to stay in Washington. Would have much rather extended him and invested less in the UFA defenseman pool this off-season, and used the greater roster flexibility next off-season to pursue the better UFA defenseman pool.

it was pretty clear that he was willing to stay in Washington while McPhee and Oates were there. Its not nearly so clear after they were fired. He said as much.
