From talking to Toronto fan:
Laich
Samsonov
carrick
Galiev
1st

JVR
PAP

Carrick and Galiev are the pieces to take Laich back. 1st and Samsonov is the cost for JVR.

As a Toronto fan myself I wouldn't have an issue pulling the trigger on this, but JVR is probably donezo for the season so he's a poor fit for your deadline plans.

The closet Caps fan in me says Komarov is the guy to target from Toronto. Very effective on the 3rd line that can move up the lineup in case of injuries or maybe some of the younger guys (Bura) stumbling in the playoffs. Good possession numbers on a terrible team, money on the PK, coupled with a level of offensive skill that can surprise you.

Mentioned by some Edm fan probably:

Laich ($4.5M cap hit; $4M salary for '16-17) FOR Korpikoski ($2.5M cap hit; $3M salary for '16-17)

Sounds good to me. Those greedy Toronto fans already asking for the moon for their players.

PS: I guess there has to be an additional pick for Korpi.

Yeah, I really like Komarov. He's a good two-way player, he plays all 3 positions up front and is pretty good in the physical department. He likes to agitate, which no player beside Wilson does on the current Caps team.

Hockeykicker, that's not how Roman numerals work
It's part LXIX (69).

If we can take no long term salary back for Laich, even better. Need flexibility for signing:
Chimera
Johansson
Orlov
Wilson
Latta
Richards?
Weber?

So adding 3m in a guy like Korpikoski isn't really good, unless we expect him to take Chimera's slot. That's why I'm not really into Komarov either.

Grabner and PAP helps to allow for as much freedom as possible once the season is over. Either to keep most everyone (from our first ever Cup winner, I hope!!), or to make changes and upgrades.

I would've named the thread Part Brooks Laich - 4,499,431 ;)

Laich's money coming off the books is perfect to sign Kuzy in 2017.

Ahem, yes, as well as sign/replace Oshie, Williams, Burakovsky, Alzner and Schmidt :)

Not to mention Galiev, who under Mitch Korn can turn into superstar backup goalie by then!

Only if they retain 50% next year on Korpy.

That's a damn marginal move aside from addressing Laich today.

Not really. Caphit difference is 2M. Real salary diff next year is 1M. So that dump has to be cheap. A proven leader (proud Canadian guy) with good defensive game (Laich) for eurotrash. A minor prospect could do the trick. Or some 4th round pick, maybe 5th.

2M caphit space is enough to get McGinn or Grabner or Gordon with 50% retained. In other words, getting PKer back for Laich (Korpi) + space this year (enough for bottom-6 specialist of any kind) + 2M next year (sufficient for our needs supposedly).

2M is really good for next year. And it's a player who can replace Chimera or even go to another team without much problem (if required).

If Mac can move Laich for a cheaper contract and we don't have to retain any salary, he's officially the GM of the year.

It'll be interesting to see what happens - but sounds like a move is definitely happening by Monday afternoon. Get yo' popcorn ready!

Oshie and Williams likely shouldn't come back. I think it's maybe not written on the wall, but not out of the realm of possibility for Oshie to fall off relatively soon. I don't want the Caps on the hook for his next contract.

Williams is a little more dependent on what that contract looks like, and how ageless he remains. I think if you're creative you could get something worked out, but only if Williams wants to stay as much as you want to keep him.

We need to do it like the Hawks. Unload Oshie and find a Panarin to replace him ;)

This is why I wouldn't move Vrana. If Oshie isn't retained we have nobody internally to slot into a top 6 role. Of course it's not a guarantee he evolves into that position but it's the ideal option.

But it doesn't really matter -- if they leave, you still need to replace two top-6 RWs. It's not like they leave and you just save money. They leave, and the team gets worse. Maybe Wilson can hack it by then, but if so, his salary will also go up, and you'll still need to add a 3rd line player.

Either way, there will be a cap crunch in 2017, and the team will very likely/almost certainly be weaker coming out of that summer. Still a good team... not saying the sky will be falling :)

Isabelle just mentioned $360K (annual) needing to move out to get Beagle activated.

Is that the official number? I thought it was more.

That's also where you see a Riley Barber fill in, where you hopefully take this draft and next to get a forward injection into the system to combat these problems now that the next 3-5 years of defense isn't a huge question mark.

The RW hole will need filled, yes, but I'm saying it's a fool's errand to fill it with Oshie at that point. That's what bad teams do to handcuff themselves out of a window. Oshie doesn't really look fast right now, by the end of that next contract he's Good Soldier 2.0.

You can't keep everybody, but you can prioritize the youth, and in your list Oshie and Williams are the two obvious men out.
