Undefeated Dallas Stars make a trade...why?

Dallas, Texas. (AP) - The league leading Dallas Stars have just announced that they have acquired Darius Kasparaitis.

The league leading Dallas Stars have just announced they have acquired Darius Kasparaitis from the Florida Panthers for Joel Kwitakowski and a 4th round pick which originally belonged to Flordia in the 2007 draft. There is also a financial sum going back to Dallas to compensate for Darius Kasparaitis' salary.

Laurens Thie, General Manger for the Stars was quoted saying the following; "He's an a**...I love him for that. Sure he's lost a step over the last couple of years, but we need a guy who's going to crawl up the butts of our opponents and keep them in check with an elbow or two upside the head.

We've got a bit of a backlog in our D this year now. We've got Schubie and Exelby who are NHL capable defenceman...one of them could possibly go for some left wing help on the 3rd line.

But, the most important thing to me is that we keep playing like a team like we have. This is a great group of kids that is starting to restore some respect here in Dallas and I don't want to mess things up too much...but we needed Darius' style of play and his leadership.

Oh..is that a keg over there?"

The Florida Panthers recently announced another trade involving one of the clubs blueliners.

The Panthers traded veteran defenseman Darius Kaspairitis, along with an unspecified amount of cash, to the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Joel Kwiatowski and a 4th rounder in 2007.

GM Otten had this to say about the trade. "With the acquisition of Jason Smith, Darius was going to begin losing ice time and we felt that he was no longer a good fit on our hockey club. We wish him the best in Dallas because hes a warrior and fits very well into their lineup."

This is no doubt to be considered a salary dump by the Panthers, as Kaspar was currently making 2.2 million for this season and next. With pending free agents Shane Doan, Jason Smith, Raffi Torres, Ray Emery, Marek Svatos, and Daniel Cleary among others, the Panthers are going to need that extra 2 million to help lock them up.
