FWIW he was 14th in Selke voting last year and 10th the year before, so clearly hes become one of the better two-way players in the league.

(I dont have na opinion either way when it comes to his nomination being warranted, but I dont think its some travesty)

83% of the vote, 119 first place votes vs McDavids 56%, 29 first place votes... there's a good chunk of hockey media members based in Toronto but not enough for that kind of gap even if all of them had Matthews at the top of their ballots
basing your opinion on people’s opionon(media) and not stats is pretty crazy

His excellent defensive play throughout the season. Same as the other finalist. In fact likely the top 10 are all very good -excellent two way players.
What data(stats) do you have to present. I’m sorry I can’t get with the “trust me bro”

It is the media that votes on most of the awards: The Hart, The Calder, The Norris, The Masterton, The Byng the all star teams.

Everyone is entitled to their individual opinion.

The stats have been presented. I have only the same stats that everyone else has- some people may have more like advanced stats and the like. The "trust me bro" is 'the eye test".

And as fans that is debated Ad nauseam. Usually with people with some sort of stats to back their claim. Read the hart thread.

This is not a personal attack. I was just a little confused how he could be in the top theee in defensive forwards. Opinions are fine but if you have no merit to the claim it’s gonna get called out

What are you going on about? I have the same stats as anyone else. Someone came up with stats earlier. Beside, what stats have you posted?

I’m not gonna dig through 13 pages of nonsense. Care to point to certain posts?

Is that some sort of internet rhetoric? I haven't given you any indication of my level of excitement.

thank you. I’ll check it out I see the rank is that league wide or just between the theee nominations

Surprised to see Staal there. We all know his value defensively but when was the last time a guy with 30 pts got nominated?

It sure is a pleasant surprise since it's a throwback to what the award is supposed to be.

It's hard to grasp the voters' reasoning this year though.

1 pure defensive specialist
1 elite two-way player
1 superelite offensive player who's also good defensively

It's like they can't decide what the criteria is for deserving a vote. Pick a lane.

and HE gets to be a Selke finalist?! What a sick joke! You're telling me a man just happened to get nominated like that. He orchestrated it, Jimmy!

Post Bergeron, it's just gonna be Barkov plus two PR campaigns going forward. Matthews the elite player because of his offense and Staal because of his legacy.

It's only from these 3 nominations (the page 11 quote), so the player could be ranked way, way down league wide. The ones Matthews is actually high up on are blocked shots and +/- (that I'm aware of). But, either way, the stats posted are not reflecting how they compare to the rest of the league.

Barkov stands out a bit more against his teammates, that's for sure.

This is the hardest trophy because it’s difficult to judge based on stats. Even plus/minus can be overrated.

Maybe the players should vote on this award.

It's Matthews to lose. His generational 40s pk time per game is an inspiration to us all.

Jesus Christ Allmighty.

Toronto Media should pick all the trophy winners while we're at it. Maybe make up some new ones too.

Marner would be a multiple "most grown man" trophy winner already

Imagine having the 10th worst PK in the league, and you aren't even trying to play one of the 3 best defensive forwards in the entire NHL on it? Grounds for coach being fired IMO, being that clueless.

Imagine now, this same player is statistically your best player on the penalty kill.

The fact that he wasn't relied upon more on the pk should have been grounds for dismissal before the end of the season to be quite honest.

The Leafs don't play on the pp very often, and there are at least 45 seconds of ice time to add for Matthews on the pk.

Not that he's the focus of the team the way Ovechkin is right now with his goals record chase, but because he's almost assuredly the best solution to the problems the team had killing penalties.

Leaf had 55 goals against on the PK, 47 goals against and they would been top 10, thats 1 goals every 10 games, can playing more in other situation a 70 goal scorer has more value ? Can a single non goaltender player even good change a PK that much over replacement ?
