UConn men’s hockey powers past Yale, 5-1, to reach Connecticut Ice final

Kevin O’Neil jumped out onto the ice for his 116th collegiate hockey game Saturday, and he knew this one would not be like the rest.

“It was very weird, honestly,” he said. “Just getting ready for the game, never expected to be on the other bench, playing against Yale. I made a lot of good memories with the guys there. I tried to look at it as just another game, but it definitely wasn’t.”

O’Neil graduated from Yale last year and, with the Ivy League not allowing fifth year students to play, chose UConn to play out his eligibility. He delivered a goal and an assist to start the Huskies on their way to a 5-1 win over Yale in the first game of the Connecticut Ice tournament Saturday at Webster Bank Arena. ...

“He just brings a lot of energy,” UConn coach Mike Cavanugh said. “He’s just a hockey player. He’s not overly big, not overly fast. He’s got good skills, but he just competes so hard on pucks, pucks stick to him. He makes plays, he’s in the right place at the right time.” ...

The Connecticut Ice consolation game between Sacred Heart and Yale did not disappoint. A back-and-forth battle between the Pioneers and Bulldogs men's hockey teams ended in a 4-3 Sacred Heart overtime win over Yale at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. ...

... Sacred Heart (knotted) the game back up at a 3-3 tie on a power-play goal by Pioneers fifth-year senior forward Dante Palecco (16:57). In the right place at the right time during a shot by freshman defenseman Hunter Sansbury, Palecco cut and deflected the puck under the legs of (Yale sophomore goaltender Nathan) Reid and eventually forced overtime.

... In the five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime period, senior forward Todd Goehring (1:40) lasered a wrist shot for the game-winning score and secured Sacred Heart a 4-3 walk-off victory. Steele sent the puck up and across to Goehring, who took advantage of a screening sophomore defenseman Andrius Kulbis-Marino and sniped the decisive shot past Reid's right shoulder. ...

The Quinnipiac Bobcats came into the 2022 Connecticut Ice tournament as the favorites, and rightfully so, entering play as the No. 2 team in the nation with hopes of winning a National Championship.

They were tested by both Sacred Heart on Saturday and UConn on Sunday, but ultimately the Bobcats were able to prevail thanks to some timely goals and some fantastic play between the pipes.

After surviving the Pioneers on Saturday with a 3-2 overtime win, the Bobcats scored twice in the third period on Sunday to defeat UConn and capture the championship trophy. ...

Sunday’s star was goalie Yaniv Perets, who set a school record with his ninth shutout of the season, as the Bobcats tied an NCAA single-season record with their 12th team shutout. Perets stopped all 29 shots that came his way, and he was rewarded with the 2022 Gordie Howe MVP Trophy afterwards as the tournament’s most valuable player. ...
