Without knowing any surrounding context, didn't look bad enough to miss the most important game of the tourney.

I am not sure the importance of the game should determine the length of the suspension.

If they think he should be suspended he should be regardless if this is a round robin game against Mongolia or the Gold medal game.

I have hard time believing that it deserves a suspension, two minute minor and be done with it. Unless I am missing something, it didn't look overly malicious, thought he could have walked it off. I know it hurts to take one to the back of the legs, but usually you are back next shift.

While you are right that it probably only deserved a 2 minute minor how it is percieved really depends on who it is being delivered to and who is delivering it.

If that is a Canadian player doing that the cries of goonery and calls for suspension would be very thick around these parts.

We need to keep that in mind.

Totally agree with you, if that is a Canadian player slashing, he would have been suspended already.

Absolutely or at the very minimum loads of fans here would be calling for it.

It is difficult not to notice the kid glove attitude towards the Swedish players actions here. Most people are fluffing it off as no big deal, why is that?

Canada is one country around here whose players can't get away with that around these parts, so I have to ask.......................why should anyone else when they engage in such things as the swedish player did there?

He has shown himself to be a star but the Canadian team was advertised going in as a team without the usual star power it normally possesses in terms of highly hyped top picks and for the most part it has proven to be true, it is a deep team with 4 solid lines but there are no Sidney Crosbys,Mcdavids,or even Marner type level guys. No one really knew what to expect from Makar and he was hardly hyped to the moon, sure he was a top 4 pick but it was considered a very weak draft and he was also considered a bit of a gamble to be drafted at the 4th slot coming out of tier 2 junior in Alberta, he was an unknown quantity for most and no one was sure just how good he was.

Makar has proven to be really good but it still is a not a star studded team at all. the description of the team going into this tournament is accurate though Makar has been a wonderful revelation.
You guys are going on about Makar but do you realize he is Canada's 7th defence man. That tells me Canada has a lot of depth.

It is the IIHF there should be zero concern for any team playing Canada that they will get the short end of the stick in terms of reffing.

I may be off by a game or two but I am pretty sure we are are basically on a 1,267,854 game streak of getting screwed by the officials in IIHF games.

The Euro trash refs will not being doing any favors for Canada today.
European refs dont approve of the physical play that Canada brings. It has always been a problem for Canada.

They've had no problem playing afternoon games all week. Strangely they even specifically pegged the US for the 4pm semi game, not sure why considering how many people showed up..

But otherwise I of course agree, it's always that way, they have to set up the games for the home market even if the fans don't actually come out ;) It's why I'm glad the Czech team is playing the bronze medal game, at least I get to see it.
Duh the Bronze medal game is this afternoon.

I've spoken about our depth as being a strength several times in this thread. We were advertised as such going into the tournament and it has held true. What our team is not is a powerhouse based on high end offensive stars, and we were also advertised as such going into the tournament and that has held true also.

Canada is and has been pretty much what the onlookers and pundits described before a game was played at this thing. Makar and Batherson have emerged but that has been somewhat of a surprise, especially in Bathersons case, no one even expected him to ever even be on this team a short while ago. The guy is a fourth round pick!!

It sure has but rarely does that get acknowledged around these parts, I appreciate the honesty here, it's rare when it comes to the realities for Canada at international tournaments.

Not really sure what you're trying to say. I'm glad it's the afternoon game because I get to see it, the rest was in reference to a Swedish fan complaining about the gold game being on too late.

And at the end of the day....with all the complaining about Makar's ice time. It has been working. He has been running the top powerplay in the tournament the entire tournament and putting up a ton of points and looked really good doing so. The rest of Canada's defense has looked great as well. Whatever it is they are doing it is working which is all that matters.
Makar is a pp specialist on a sick pp. We dont want him on the ice very often 5 on 5

yea, Makar is the best player on Canada. Not even close imo, he needs more ice.
Ya OK you guys know more than the coaching staff. He is the 7th dman on this team because the other 6 are better defensively. Makar is pretty much a pp specialist.

To me the key to Canada winning today is to get on that fantastically skilled swedish defense, I thought it was the key for the Americans to win yesterday also and said so. We need to get on them hard immediately and all game long and disrupt what they are so very capable of doing. They can make shit happen to hurt you in the blink of an eye, I think their skill level back there is a cut above Canadas or anyone elses in this tournament. It has to be dealt with and right from the drop of the puck.

Second key is Hart, I have not liked how he tracks pucks being passed east west on power plays or any other situation, he makes me nervous. We cannot take any more then 3-4 penalties IMO, not confident in the guy at all but I hope he proves me wrong.

If the refs had seen it they wouldn't have had any choice but to assess a major + game-misconduct or match penalty.

RULE 159 – SLASHING DEFINITION: A player who swings his stick, with one hand or two, at any part of an opponent’s body or equipment. Contact to the opponent is not necessary for the penalty to be assessed.

iii. A player who injures or recklessly endangers an opponent by slashing will be assessed a major penalty and game-misconduct penalty or a match penalty

Looking att the slash it looked like absolutely nothing and I saw stuff that was a lot worse then that during the match (example: Tkachuks triple crosscheck to Andersson after the whistle). The only reason this is an issue now is the injury and because of how the rules are written there is nothing wrong with that. I my opinion it the slash is not worthy of a match penalty (and automatic suspension) because it wasn't especially vicious and just extremely unlucky that Yamamoto got injured.

I think Sweden's top end defensemen are better. Dahlin and Liljegren and to an extent Branstrom have had great tournaments but once you get passed those three defensemen....There really isn't much to see there. Canada's back end as a whole is a better more balanced group in my opinion.
