From what I read about her she's not as accomplished as the other girl who is apparently the darling of the sport in Russia so they turn their nose up at her and dismiss her.

Exactly. There's a long tradition of that. The Finnish Russian war in the late 30s saw a lot of that. And then also in ww2 of course. Good call!
