I guess the good news if they win, people may no longer be saying "05/06 Canes were the weakest team to win the cup."

If we had won that game 7 and went on to win the cup in hindsight it would've been mindblowing. Your roster had a guy I see getting into the Hall (E. Staal) and a bunch of guys who probably don't get in but are at the level just below HOF. Look at that Sabres roster. The best players were probably Briere, Vanek and Miller who while good players weren't exactly legends. They would've been the worst team to ever win the cup, particularly in hindsight.

That’s... a really weird way to think about it. I feel disoriented.

Vanek wasn’t actually that good that year, he was 6th on the team in points that regular season and only had 2 points in 10 playoff games. His big breakout year was the next year (President’s Trophy) when he scored 40.

My memory actually served me correctly for once - I think of the Briere/Drury two-headed monster and they did indeed lead the team in playoff points. Then a 22-year-old Derek Roy (my goodness that was a long time ago).

Also, Weight only missed two playoff games? For some reason my mind has him missing whole playoff rounds...

Another fun stat: the Adams family (Kevyn, Craig) combined for 0 playoff points despite both playing all 25 playoff games.
You might be flipping him and Erik Cole in your mind. Its funny, I tend to mix up Cole's dominant 2002 run and think it was part of 2006, but nope. Thanks to Orprik, he was shelved until Game 6, when he came in for Weight who dislocated his shoulder earlier in the series. Speaking of which, that must have been one hell of a painful cup raise.

No I remember Cole coming back triumphantly in Game 6, I just have this memory of Weight missing the majority of the playoffs as well... Weird.

I clearly remember thinking about Weight’s injury problems while I was watching that movie Shazaam, where Sinbad plays a genie.

I think I had that movie on while I was reading some Berenstein Bears

Ha! I was just going to reference "The Mandela Effect" myself. At least you spelled "Berenstein" properly, not the way that the scientists at CERN with their hellish experiments are responsible for

I know its petty...but as much as Ovie deserves it and the long suffering Washington fanbase deserves a cup...I prefer being able to say to them when they look down their noses at me for wearing a Canes shirt "At least we have a cup."
