i am not a fan of veleno...honestly hes like poor man's matt stajan and thats giving him praise for me. how ever that is just my view, there is something about his game that makes me concerned. i haven't watched him recently but it was just whenever i watched him he bothered me.

Honestly, the more I look at Bob Mack's rankings the happier I'll be if we trade down and pick up an extra 2nd or two.

I LOVE the 27-59 range in his rankings. Bolded are my favourites:

27. Sandin
28. Thomas

30. Alexeyev
32. Merkley
34. O'Brien
35. McBain
36. Lundkvist
38. Berggren

39. Beaudin
40. Oloffson
41. Addison

42. Woo
51. Tychonick
52. Wise
55. Nordgren
59. Hallander

If we came away with any three or four of those guys instead of two, I would be over the moon.

If we can move into the high 30s and grab Berggren, add picks and then pick Wise at 52nd, it would be a dream draft.

Incredible.

Eh, big bodied guy with some skill.

The kind of player some scouts drool over yet they often seem to disappoint

In the black book it didn't sound like a lot of the scouts were that high on him, if you combined his tools and his brothers compete you would end up with a decent player

Wise obviously isn't going at 52... He's going to be a late 1st/ early 2nd.

My dream would be something like:

Leafs - 25 + 117
Habs - 35 + 38

35 - Berggren
38 - Addison
52 - Wise/Hallander
83 - Jenkins

Very very very good draft.

We have similar tastes. IMO though, if Berggren is available at 25 I think I'm taking him right then and there and not letting someone else take him before we come up again.

I like Berggren a lot, don't get me wrong. I just don't like him more than two of any of these guys (especially bolded guys):

27. Sandin
28. Thomas

I don't have a lot of respect for Bergevin but I seriously doubt he's doing us that big a favour

#24 became #34+#61+#68 in 2015
If we trade down it's going to look more like that imo

That's 10 spots at that point + he still gets a 4th round pick from it. It's not the most out there deal lately.

Yeah the cost to move up 10 spots into the 1st round would be high. Stranger things have happened. The Habs staff would have to REALLY like a particular player though.

The last time I can remember a deal that bad for the team trading up was Burkie in his Leaf days, a #118 pick as a sweetener isn't going to move the needle enough imo

Realistically we can pick at #25+#52 Or something like #35+#52+#61+#68

You have to remember when it comes to the trade we made in 2015, we only traded 5 spots at a time. It makes sense that we only got a late 2nd back each time.

How high do you think you could get trading both 68 + 61? My guess is right around 40, which is essentially 38.

I think if your playing the odds your better off picking at #61+#68 rather than moving back up into the mid 40's

Realistically your moving down to increase your odds of hitting so you should probably stay with that thinking once you've started

It's like nobody expected Bracco to fall to the last pick of the 2nd round. It happens.

It's not necessarily because teams don't like him, it's they like someone else a little more. He got injured most of the season so some teams didn't get to see him as much, therefore he's rated lower.

Shotgun approach is nice, but id rather take two shots in the top-40 than 1 in the top-40 and two in the top-67.

I felt the same way esp after reading the black book, but after watching his shift-to-shift video in a playoff game, I find his game quite impressive.

Could the divergence of opinions be explained by scouts getting varying impressions based on the games they attended?

It's been said that there is a #15-#45 tier. I like my odds better in that tier. I'm all for moving down if we can get another top 4oish pick.

It's definitely debatable either way depending on who's available in that midish 40's range but I'm sure pick values would favour the 2 picks in the high 60's instead
