I think taking Evan Bouchard over Svechnikov or Zadina would be a huge misfire. Yes, defense is our biggest organizational hole, but I think those two players make a larger impact than Boqvist, Bouchard, Hughes, or any of the guys after Dahlin. Obviously if we pick 4-10, defense is an absolute priority, but those are franchise wingers.

My point wasn't the Red Wings list to be in "right" order.

It was that every team could have different kind of lists and still get their TOP2-3 favourite player from 2nd to 7th overall.

I like a lot of the guys in this draft. I think my top 5 is pretty set in stone though.

I don't like Zadina has as much upside as Svechnikov and Tkachuk. I am really high on Hughes and Bouchard is also why I have them in front. He is a very good player, we shouldn't be upset if he is added to the ranks.

I really wish one of the big three forwards was right shot though

Wahlstrom is right handed and I think he would pair excellently with Larkin. He’s a RH sniper with skill and size.

I think he would be a good fit with Larkin. I just don't think he has the same kind of ceiling as the big three up front this year. But again it is hard to get too upset about the Top 10 this year. I know that will likely change in a few years, let's hope we don't wind up with the Jessiman pick...

Well, guess it depends how you rank your forwards. My top 3 would be Svech/Zadina/Wahlstrom and then Tkachuk would be a very close 4.

I like all of those guys, but I don’t see what Wahlstrom lacks to say he doesn’t have a high ceiling. He’s also one of the younger guys in this class. Watch him destroy the NCAA or Q next year. He’s got a big frame, good hands, and can shoot the shit out of the puck.

If we had been taking guys like Nick Suzuki, I would probably lean towards taking someone like Tkachuk. But we need gamebreakers, so I am ranking them based on that.

I think Brady Tkachuk is going to break a lot of games.

What if Corey Perry skated better... I think he is the answer to that question. I think that highly of Tkachuk.

I am starting to feel though that this is the best draft since 03 as we run into it.

Interesting. I guess that cluster of wingers after Svech is pretty close for me. Honestly I really like this crop of USA kids, I’d be happy with any of Wahlstrom, Hughes, or Tkachuk the more I think about it. I’m sure Larkin would take any of them too.

Yeah I like all three.

In the top 9 I listed I won't be upset about a single one of those guys. There will be players I prefer for sure but we should be getting a heck of a hockey player.

I think the Wings would really like that Tkachuk allows them to go heavy skill but fits the identity of the players they have been drafting. He is that rare mold kind of player, it would be a very intriguing addition is all I am saying. I also think he could make Larkin a lot better too. It also might free up the correct deal of Mantha or AA for the defensive help we need or maybe we just have our top 6 mostly figured out.

Still some of this needs to be decided and we have more evaluation to go.

Good points. It’s funny you wish those forwards were right handed, and I wish Dobson or Bouchard were left handed.

I think Bouchard should be hard for Detroit to pass on for a winger. The offensive production is just insane and hard to ignore. Dobson looks like he could be Pieterangelo 2.0 with his size and skating.

Then your guy Hughes, I wish he was taller but the skating and the skill is unreal. With how much Ghost has improved his overall game this year, that gives me hope Hughes can be more than a specialist.

In my head I was likening Tkachuk to JVR, but I think I was just locked into thinking of other USA guys.

I am starting to feel though that this is the best draft since 03 as we run into it.

Could it be because of many National programs going strong? Czechs are coming again, and Finland doing well like latest years. USA hockey is really booming and Canada is strong as always. Also Sweden and Russia on producing talents at normal level.

All these things together are making a deep class ?

Here is a site that includes a dozen different ranking lists, most recently updated anywhere from January to March:

2018 NHL Draft Rankings

And yeah, this could be such a tremendous opportunity, having 4 of the top 40 picks in what seems to be a good draft.

I can't even imagine if they somehow won the Dahlin sweepstakes on top of it all. :partytime:

I share your sentiments about those 9 players. Like you I prefer some more than others, but the margins are very, very small and you won't find me complaining if we select any of them. If, however, we are in the top 8 and deviate from that list I will be disappointed. For this reason, I find the back part of the first round and the beginning of the second round much more interesting from a prospect perspective.

Too bad to see Kaut rising into the first. Was hoping he could be had in the third or so if no one caught on. I'd say the Czech leagues are a great place to look for underscouted players but that seems to be changing.

Isn’t Bouchard one of the older kids in the draft and he really shot of this year? That sort of thing makes me nervous, I’d rather have Boqvist or Hughes.

That’s true, and Zadina is one of the older guys as well. I used to be skeptical of late birthdates, but not so much anymore.
