You can get stronger, lose weight, add muscle, hone skills, train to improve deficiencies in skating/defense... you've got a high IQ or you don't. At least until someone invents an AI chip for that.

I think I read it from mynhldraft - but someone on HF has seen him play quite a bit

I've learned around here to take that with a grain of salt if you look at their profile and they share the same Nationality. Fins push their Finnish players, Swedes push their Swedish players. Granted, not all of them... you just have to learn what posters stay impartial and trust them. Either that or I want to see the player myself.

Looks like with some consistent play to what we've been showing for weeks now the isles have a good shot at moving up to 7th pick.
Looking at the standings it will be tough to catch Montreal at 6th pick.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi Profile

Jesperi%20Kotkaniemi.jpg

Jesperi Kotkaniemi
Ht/Wt: 6' 2"/190 lbs
Position: C
Team: Ässät (FIN)

Jesperi Kotkaniemi's Player Profile

Cam Robinson - Dobber Prospects - January 9th: "Great puck skills and finishing ability, but skating remains a concern. Offers an awkward stride that doesn’t generate a ton of top-end power."

Steve Kournianos - The Draft Analyst - October 12th: "Alert and versatile forward with good speed and a wide range of attributes who has performed well beyond expectations as a 17-year-old playing key minutes in Finland’s top league. Kotkaniemi comes across as a smart, clean player with or without the puck and can play either center or wing. He is used on the penalty kill and in late-game situations, showing defensive prowess regardless of the job he’s assigned."
sounds like a Josh Bailey type. not my preference.

Kotkaniemi, from elite prospects... "A smart forward with a dangerous shot, Kotkaniemi possesses a high hockey IQ and determination with the skills to back it up. Positions himself well and often seems to be a step ahead of plays. Stickhandling and creativity allow him to split professional defences as a teenager. Decent size and frame, yet a very capable skater. (Matias Strozyk, 2017)"
he is ranked from 10th to mid 20's, and this is a red flag for me. even if we're picking mid round (Cal pick), i would pass on him.

life is too short to wait until 2026 for another " Bailey " type to mature

Anyway Butchie could never ever ever say his name even 1 time.
he does seem to be clutch, as shown by his stats in playoffs and international play, but if skating is an issue, then i am out.

Using my "eye test" Via youtube videos this Joseph Veleno looks pretty dynamic. (a big barometer if you ask my humble opinion lol) Having said that, can the Isles focus on guys that can skate fast with high compete levels for a change? AB and #13 seem to be tracking as pretty darn good NHL'ers while the guy we picked #5 in 2014 does not among other swing and misses lately

Haven't commented here recently, but in watching this team fall apart in such a terribly disappointing and disgusting manner - one in which half the league looks like a better player than Tavares and every game is a downtrodding reminder that Ladd has another 3 years on his contract - I can't help but think how incredibly, incredibly vital it is that the NYI enter the 3rd round of the draft having already found their upper class 3rd line center for the long run (heck, maybe even Turris-like 2nd line center behind Barzal) and the pure replacements for Boychuk and Leddy down the line.

That just appears to me to be THE necessary route to go.

I know, I know - BPA. Of course. But the NYI seem like they're in a position to achieve the goals listed above WHILE taking the BPA at their respective spot.

This is a team with needs and whether its Snow or another GM (yeah, right), it looks like so much is riding on this draft.

'Cause the only thing going on for the rest of this season is seeing if Barzal can be ROTY. Hell, I'd just like to see the kid crack the 80 point mark.

This draft is really important for us. We have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds and likely 2 top 15 picks.

We need to hit on these picks. No more f***ing Ryan Stromes or Griffin Reinharts.

Do your god damn homework and pick some real players.

Enough with the Bull. You have Barzal to build around if Tavares leaves. If Tavares stays we're in even better shape.

My dream, either 2 blue chip Defensman or 1 blue chip deman and 1 blue chip Forward preferably a Center in the first round.

I’m not high on the goalies in this draft but there has to be one at some point worth taking.

The 2nd round hopefully someone from the first drops and we get a good talent.

Too bad I don’t run the draft, I promise I’d know what to do and who to pick.

I'd like to see them use Cizikas as the 3rd line center, getting better value for his contract. Bring in a 4th line C @ under 2m that can play physical, win faceoffs and tend to his own zone. That seemed to be the plan when they gave him that contract anyway.

I actually hope they lose their last 10 games. I know the players will try to win every game, but they are just awful right now, and let’s bear the fruits of this awful season. Hopefully they wind up in the top 7, and hopefully Calgary keeps losing too. We deserve 2 top 10 picks for all of our suffering. Then hopefully one of the picks wins the lottery and moves up, would love to wind up with Svechnikov, Zadina or Tkachuk. Or of course Dahlin. But if we wind up top 4 it would be awesome.

That being said, we have the ammo to move up and get one of those guys. If we wind up in our slots where we finish, I’d love one of the bigger Dmen with offensive talent, Bouchard or Dobson. Lots of great options to rebuild this defense. Offensively, if we sign Tavares before the draft, I wouldn’t pick anything but defense until the 3rd round.

Moving forward, Chicago has a VERY tough schedule remaining. Edmonton, not as much. I would say Edmonton is likely to pass us, and I think Chicago will stay where they are. Outside chance that if they lose to us, they lose out the rest of the season, IMO.

I actually hope they lose their last 10 games. I know the players will try to win every game, but they are just awful right now, and let’s bear the fruits of this awful season.

And this is why I'm not worrying. The team is awful. And the statement from Burakovsky about the time and space afforded to an opponent is surely a sentiment shared by many, many NHLers who play against the Isles.

Just ask Mr. van Riemsdyk last night who had time to order a cocktail before letting the game-winning shot go. How in all of God's great green nature do the wingers (particularly) Bailey not identify him as their responsibility.

But that's been going on for months now. That Weight and co. haven't taken care of that is below NHL-standard.

Offensively, if we sign Tavares before the draft, I wouldn’t pick anything but defense until the 3rd round.

Well, let's not forget that we do NOT have a top-flight 3rd line center and there are several kids in the first round (Veleno, Lundestrom, etc.) who look like they could be JUST THAT. In fact, outside of the NHL, our next center prospect is Stevens.

Beauvillier and Nelson here or there, this team needs some answers up the middle in the years to come, especially if Tavares is a goner.

But otherwise, yes, the Dmen who will ultimately replace Leddy and Boychuk must be drafted this June - successfully and as sure things.

If we get Dobson or Bouchard and have say #14 do we offer it to Detroit with Nelson for #28, #35, #36 and Nyquist?

That could get us a haul in the 2nd round . . . Dellandrea, Ylonen, Miller, Lauko and Thomas for example . . . would certainly fill the prospect pipeline with the 2019 picks coming too.

I don’t see this happening. If anything, I see us trading up to get players we know we want, not down to get more picks and hope the ones we want are still there.

FOUR picks in the top half of the 2nd round, with too of them in the mid-30's plus a late first rounder for #14 and a swap of headaches, with us getting a perfectly good 3rd line RW seems to be a better deal in this draft than #14, #41 and #45 for example to me. If we are offered that package, why not?

Forget whether or not it could happen, the question was do you accept that package?

I doubt they give us Nyquist for Nelson.:)

I do see Detroit as a team that would have interest in Nelson, but we're not robbing them blind.

Look what they got for Tatar, which many in the industry feel was major overpay. But most teams would consider Tatar the better player, at least when leaving contractual thoughts and developmental stages out of the equation.

Maybe they'd pay pick 35 and a 3rd rounder for Nelson?

BUT that's what we fans want... If Snow didn't deal Nelson at the deadline when very comparable players were bringing back great hauls (like Tatar or Hartman did), then he clearly values Nelson for some unknown reason and thinks highly of him. I'm thinking Nelson is one of "Snow's special boys" and that he's got no desire to move him.

Is Ouelette instead of Nyquist fair enough? Would love to find a way to get extra early 2nd rounders this year . . .

I don't think we should trade up or down. Let's use the picks and get the 4 BPA. And hopefully someone else will be doing the drafting.

You can't get locked in to that thinking, you have to consider value. For example, do you agree with how much the Jets paid to move up? I didn't, others did. If we have #14 as the 2nd and someone knocks our socks off with an offer you have to consider that.
