I don't follow the World Championships so what happens after Division 1A, does the top team or so get bumped into the category with the powerhouse teams?

I want Poland and GB to reach the A-group.

Too bad they dont have Czerkawski and Tony Hand in their prime.

Kasparaitis and Zubrus intend to play for Lithuania. More or less every important player is healthy. Tadas Kumeliauskas is playing again. Combined with Ukrainian hockey being at all time low if there was a chance for Lithuania to get to 1A it's this year.

1A itself will be super close, especially if Boyd decides not to play. Slovenians should have pretty easy time though.

Whichever starts giving out passports for Canadians.

As Koreans have shown, it works out great if you do it enough. And if Koreans did it, any European country with a truly professional hockey league can do it as well. Such is the sad state of international hockey at this level, almost all the major surges were result of this strategy.

Poland looks like the next in line to benefit from this, they could/will have John Murray, Mike Cichy, Alex Szczechura, Jan Steber, Alan Lyszczarcyk (who is a little different case but still) on the roster. 5 more guys like that and they will be a serious contender.

I am never fan of having imported/naturalizied players in NT lineup. Players with country descent ok, blood is not water, but having foreginers like Young, Dalton or in Croatian case Murray, Brine, is big no no for me.

Turkmenistan made their debut at Division III Qualification and utterly dominated. Really impressive showing, will be interesting to see them at Div III next year and if they can maintain a high level of play. Good for hockey overall.

And Kuwait also joined the World Championships, and faired alright considering that. Hope they stick around, no financial excuses on their end will really work like other countries at that level.

Nice to see Turkmenistan have a successful debut. I hope they used eligible players though and it isn't another case like Armenia/Georgia where they'll be disqualified later.

Ice hockey edict for desert state
Speaking at the finals of Turkmenistan's first youth ice hockey tournament on Wednesday, the president ordered state enterprises and government departments to create ice hockey teams.
The BBC's Rayhan Demytrie says the interior ministry became the first government body to follow the edict. The police are said to be following suit.
She says Mr Berdymukhamedov is proud of his own athleticism, with state media often showing him riding horses, cycling, practising martial arts or racing cars.
Earlier this month, state workers performed mass physical exercise and were encouraged to climb an 8km (five mile) concrete staircase built into a hillside outside Ashgabat.
Mr Berdymukhamedov's predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov, who died in late 2006, built a cult of personality in the country and was responsible for a number of maverick policies, including banning opera and renaming the months.

It helps the government has a lot of money via natural gas. So they can spend a bunch of money on frivolous projects, like the hockey team and hosting some minor sporting even last year (it was something like $5 billion). Though it should be noted, for those unaware, Turkmenistan is a repressive state on par with North Korea, though because it has a policy of strict neutrality, and supplies Europe with gas, no one worries about them.

They also don't have any nuclear missles, don't threaten thir neighbours and they are absolutely not as closed as PRK.

The first two points I covered by noting they have strict neutrality, and they definitely are notoriously closed off: it's near impossible to get a visa as a tourist, though that may have been relaxed recently. Both presidents have also done a lot more unusual, and verifiable, things than the Kims, though this is getting a little too political for here.

Will say that hopefully their U20 team shows up next year; they were supposed to play this year but backed out at the last minute, with no reasons given.

Some familiar names here:

With these players, China can easily advance to Division I B and be a contender to win it. As for this years tournament, I think the goal is, to not get relegated.

Absolutely. The goaltending is a big issue though.

Had a friend who spent alot of his childhood in Kuwait. They do have quite a few rinks even back then (like 15 years ago). Back then though he said they were used pretty much exclusively by the families people just working there (mostly Finns and Canadians). He would also say he was pretty much the best player on the team they had (one of only a couple, mostly they'd travel to tournaments in Egypt and a couple other places) and he was a mediocre house league level player here in Canada. Of course I can't verify any of that haha). And none of the players he played with would ever be Kuwait players.

I actually think this team is pretty far from winning 1B. Sure it has a few solid pros but next to 0 depth. Really hard to see team like this beating out countries with excellent depth like Japan or Poland that usually win 1B. It looks way weaker than Cronuck-filled Croatia rosters and those weren't really close to winning.
