I'll come back here when Mikkola and Walman are 25-years old and compare can they play NHL bottom pair Limited minutes and compare it to Schmaltz produce and perform.

How much of it is Schmaltz not being good enough to push Bortuzzo out versus the coaching staff wanting a physical presence in the lineup? The game is certainly transitioning to skill and speed, but coaches still like having that rugged stay-at-home defensemen in the lineup on most nights.

I think this is key. How much of the Schmaltz situation is driven by d-corp philosophy vs. an individual player battle.

I'm not as high on Schmaltz as others. I think his tendency to avoid checking by pushing to the middle of the ice is problematic. I think you can get away with that in the AHL, but he doesn't quite have the skating necessary to to get away with it as frequently in the NHL. By comparison, Dunn has shown much more of a willingness to eat a puck (and the craftiness to use aggressive forechecks to his advantage), and I don't think Schmaltz has the same level of lateral skating/stick-work/vision-IQ as Dunn. As a result, he's often a bit out of position.

I freely admit that comparing him to Dunn is probably unfair (although, hard not to do), and suspect that his lack of consistent NHL coaching is a driver of some of the above. But...Schmaltz is far enough behind Dunn that they haven't been willing to accept the risk in relation to the potential benefits Schmaltz brings. Inserting him in the line-up changes the dynamic of the 3rd pairing, and I don't think (up to this year) he's shown enough to force the Blues to move away from the stalwart style Gunnarson & Bortuzzo bring, nor do I think they're completely comfortable sheltering him with one of the two. And I think that's as much of a knock on Gunnarson/Bortuzzo as it is Schmaltz.

He's in a bad spot. NHL quality player in dire need of NHL experience & NHL coaching, but stuck on the cusp of a philosophical shift. If they cloned Edmundson, I have little doubt Schmaltz would be in the line-up most nights  He brings exactly the type of insulation Schmaltz needs without the drawbacks of Gunnarson/Bortuzzo.
