Spring training is already underway, the first pre-season game is today against Atlanta. The Jays also play Saturday (Phillies) & Sunday (Pirates), both games on Sportsnet.

Jays are on TV, btw. Martin got a single in his first AB, and Bautista followed with a double.

Morales' first AB will be an RBI opportunity.

Bautista has been all-world for the DR in the WBC. Doing it all. Homers, base hits, and today saved the ball-game by throwing out a runner at the plate in extras.

He also has made defensive mistakes (at least one) and throwing the guy out at hte plate was in the bottom of the 9th, not in extras ;)

I'll be at the Yanks game on Aug 8. Anyone know how easy it is to get autographs? I want Pillar's. Play the same position and have the same number

So the Jays released Melvin Upton Junior yesterday while making their final roster decisions. Thank goodness for that. Guy was terrible his whole tenure here. And it means Ezequiel Carrera will get a lot of playing time in left.

Opening roster for today's season opener:

Estrada pitching

1. Devon Travis
2. Josh Donaldson
3. Jose Bautista
4. Kendrys Morales
5. Troy Tulowitzki
6. Russell Martin
7. Steve Pearce
8. Kevin Pillar
9. Ezequiel Carrera

Bench options: Jarrod Saltalamacchia (C), Darwin Barney (IF), Ryan Goins (IF), Justin Smoak (1B)

I haven't been keeping too close an eye on the team recently, but Dalton Pompey got hurt at the WBC, otherwise I think he might have made the active roster for today. For sure, the Jays would be wise to have him on the bench for speed and outfield depth. Steve Pearce is currently fourth on the outfield pecking order.

That's still a really solid lineup IMO. Let's hope Travis can play closer to his potential this year. So pumped for this season!

Wearing my Devon Travis shirt to work today. Excited for noon.

Also shout out to Sportsnet for shamelessly advertising the start time of the game for noon MT during the hockey game last night so everyone tunes in to watch the pre-game. The game actually starts at 1pm MT.

First embarrassing moment of the season. Routine fly ball to left centre and neither Pillar nor Carrera goes to catch it.

I don't like that SN has backed off on their Pitchtrax. Last year it was there for every pitch. Now it's just once in a while.

Pearce was signed to be an outfielder. By all accounts they want him in LF against RH pitching and 1B against LH pitching. The only was Peace isn't a regular outfielder is if his shoulder is still bugging him.

Pearce may have been signed with outfield in mind, but recall that he was signed before Bautista was signed. Morales is signed to be the DH, and will get most of his time there. Smoak isn't going to play most games given his struggles last year. I think when they got Bautista, the priority for Pearce changed.

What makes the most sense right now is for Pearce to perhaps play LF against lefties to take Carrera out of the lineup, but play 1B against righties to get Carrera in there.

The Jays have been outspoken about Smoak being important and being the regular first baseman, even after Jose re-signed. Everything I have read about Pearce being an outfielder if his shoulder allowed it, was during Spring Training. Although the Jays have been looking at Angel Pagan recently so they are clearly not happy with the prospect of a Zeke/Pillar/Jose outfield.

I'm really not sure why they never seem to have confidence with Zeke. All he does is get clutch hits and make good plays (that debacle in the second inning aside).

Love having a pitcher than throws sidearm

Yeah, I'm liking these new bullpen guys so far.
