GREAT night for the Tank.
Ottawa win in regulation
Florida win in regulation
Philly wins in OT - but Carolina gets a point
Buffalo gets a point in OT.

Florida is now ahead of Detroit with a game in hand.
Ottawa is within five points.
Carolina picks up a point on us and they're 7 up on us.
Columbus is 8 up on Detroit for the last playoff spot.

What I worry about is the Rangers who appear in full tank mode.

And there have already been articles outlining an impending fire sale:

But, returning to the standings, I'm confident that there are simply too many other teams in play, with too many points up for grabs, to allow Detroit to get close enough to a playoff spot, that it completely prevents the Wings from selling at the deadline. Trading just 1-2 guys, versus more wholesale moves, is likely still up for grabs, but the ship has sailed on standing pat this year.

The Wings missed their window. They had a window of relatively easy games where they could bank some points and stay in the picture. They couldn't do it. Now they're on to a brutal stretch of 7-8 games against very good teams. To make the playoffs, they'd have to run the table against some of the league's best. I just don't see that happening.

They could still muddle their way to the deadline. The schedule gets tough in March. They might be lucky to win 3 games in March.
Good for the tank.
But not so good for being bad enough to have a firesale before the deadline.

Lundqvist is going to be hard to tank with. I know they might sell everyone, but he should have got a point last night against Dallas. I think he will collect them some points no matter what they do, he is having a good year despite how that team is playing around him.

Though the Rangers do have a very challenging schedule kind of like us if I remember right.

Lundquist is one of the few goalies I'd pay a premium for in this league. So crazy consistent.

Lundquist has slipped a little bit the last two years with the two worst GAAs of his career - quite easily, too.
His save percentage was at an all time low last year. It has rebounded to .919 this year. But is GAA is still high for him.

If Detroit can stay with 2-3 points of 29, we're gonna get creamed in March.
Good chance we finish 29th... which means what? 6th overall at worst?

I’m hoping to finish No higher than 5th last. That would likely have us picking 6 or 7.

But to be honest I’m hoping for lottery balls. It’s what we need.

I think that is best case scenario. Regardless of what some think, we just aren't going to drop below Arizona, and even Buffalo looks like an impossibility. Everyone else though I could see us falling behind, especially if we unload at the deadline.

I'm in a weird position, because I either want #1 or 6/7/8/9. I don't want to draft 2/3/4/5 because I think drafting a good defenseman when you need defensemen is more valuable than drafting a somewhat better winger when you don't need wingers. This team is not crawling out of the hole on wingers alone, regardless of what the organization thinks.

I guess in a way we're in a good position for what I want. I just also need the Wings to lose enough that they'll still agree to sell, so it's a sensitive thing. I truly believe that if Detroit gets to 12th-ish in the standings, Holland is going to stand pat.

If you'd be mad at getting Svechnikov at #2, IMO you really shouldn't be. He's that good.

The way the lottery works, you shouldn't be worried. Odds are great we will be drafting somewhere between 5-10.

I don't want a winger, full stop. I don't care who it is. A good bit of the trouble this team is in right now owes to thinking wingers are BPA all the time. It's just not a very valuable position, IMO.

You wouldn't want Laine at #2? Would I be surprised if Svechnikov was that good? Not really. Did Laine provide a huge boost to Winnipeg? Hell yes.

We need so many things that if our pick doesn't bust we win regardless of whether we got a puck-moving defenseman or a sniper wing. I'd prefer the defenseman, though.
