I know there has been a lot of talk about the winning culture, how we should not lose it. But they tried what they could for 5 months. Now, letting 1 month go as a toilet flush doesn't matter at all in the big picture. Or, it is at least the least damage you can have.

I like it this way, you push until the deadline as you can and see where you are. I hate what those Buffaloes and Arizonas are doing, teams are totally lost already from start of the season, and whole season becomes meaningless.

Some silver lining in this current mess.

Arizona has put together a pretty decent record whenever their goaltending wasn't crap. They were .500 when Raanta played this year and just one game under with Kuemper's 6 games. Their backups were a disaster and losing Hjalmarsson and Chychrun for 20-30 games really hurt them. I'm wondering how much injuries have affected weaker teams across the NHL. Better, deeper teams can still cover for them, at least to an extent. A team like Arizona loses a guy they lean on or a goalie doesn't find his game and it seems their seasons go south a lot faster.

What I find sad with the wings right now is that I don't think the effort level is that bad.

Yeah, that happens in a teams with no depth. You lose too many core guys, and injuries will kill the season. Youth can't carry 82 games, looks like usually it can go 50-60 games. Like Larkin hit the wall at his rookie season or Barzal now. Winnipeg is rolling no matter of the injuries, because they have elite talent and so much depth.

What I find sad with the wings right now is that I don't think the effort level is that bad.

Some players are going with normal effort, some are not. In a team like Red Wings with no depth or elite talent, that causes a losing streak. There's just not enough positives to carry the negatives.

Let's keep losing, do a restart at summer.

Also wouldn't hurt to win the lottery... :)

Losing one of our top goalscorers, our backup goalie (Coreau is straight trash), hitting a rough part of the schedule (one of the most difficult in the league post-TDL) and a slight decrease in effort level = bottom falling out.

I don’t think we’re as bad as this, but this team just doesn’t have it in them right now to grind out wins against good teams.

With points from last 10 games...

Arizona, 13 points in last 10 games. 1.3 ppg
Buffalo, 11 points in last 10 games, 1.1 ppg
Vancouver, 6 points in last 10 games, 0.6 ppg
Ottawa, 9 points in last 10 games, 0.9 ppg
Detroit, 5 points in last 10 games, 0.5 ppg
Montreal, 9 points in last 10 games, 0.9 ppg

...if they keep the pace:

26. Montreal, 11 games left, 64 points + 9.9 points = 73.9 points
27. Ottawa, 13 games left, 61 points + 11.7 points = 72.7 points
28. Arizona, 12 games left, 57 points + 13.6 points = 72.6 points
29. Buffalo, 12 games left, 56 points + 13.2 points =69.2 points
30. Detroit, 12 games left, 63 points + 6.o points = 69.0 points
31. Vancouver, 11 games left, 59 points + 6.6 points = 65.6 points

Vancouver and Detroit are currently at worst dead spiral. :)

Here's hoping and praying that it materializes just like this. Then the very worst DET could pick would be #5 overall still will get a quality player here.

Still have a brutal stretch of games here, Outside of maybe Buffalo and Ottawa games, I really don't see the Wings winning much here. Unless Howard gets hot for a game or two and steals a game we're not expecting to win here. Finishing in the bottom 3 shouldn't be out of the question.

Actually I just fear our fellow competitors will not win enough. Our schedule is rough. I am not worried about us.

This is gonna be the issue I think. Vancouver is injured so that doesnt help, but every team below us sucks just as bad. I dont know what Ottawas schedule is like but I guess maybe they could win some games if Karlsson takes over.

At worst, I think we end up with the 7th worst record.

Realistically I think we're looking at about the 5th worst. I'm convinced this awful team will somehow win a couple of late ones, similiar to what the Pistons did for like 4 straight years.

We are falling in the standings, but painfully slowly. If we win just 1 game we pass 3 teams.
At this point we would only pass 2 (Ottawa and Montreal) and be tied with Edmonton but we would still be below them in the rankings. Regardless, we really could use a couple winning streaks for teams surrounding us.

Ottawa isn't out of the question. I'm still hoping they have a little run towards the end of the season. I mean they're basically the same team that made the ECF a year ago.. they only need 6 more points and 2 more ROW than us in the last 17 games to pass us.

6-9-2, 14 points, 4 ROW
vs
7-4-6, 20 points, 6 ROW

Or something like that would do it.

I see what you're saying that it could happen, but I highly doubt it. I live in Ottawa, most of my friends are Sens fans, the team is a mess. There is absolutely nothing indicating that they are gonna go on a winning streak any time soon. They lost to Arizona on the weekend...

Each team has 17 games left, with Detroit up by 6 points, and one more ROW.

It would take something like the Wings going 5-11-1 down the stretch, and the Senators finishing 8-7-2.

Not something I'd count on, but still possible.
Since then:

Wings 0-1-5

Sens 3-1-1

I just remember a bunch of people around here slobbering over Arizona's defense when they added Hjalmarsson and Demers over the offseason

pretty funny in hindsight

But by the same token, Arizona is 24th in goals allowed, and 30th in goals scored. With them and Buffalo being comfortably behind everybody else.

If anybody could use a Svech or Zadina in this draft, it's the Coyotes.
