How many AHL contracts can a team sign? It looks like Buffalo signed 16 this year, Toronto 16 last year, with a number of teams signing 14 this year. What's to prevent a team from signing a pile of of young prospects who would otherwise be forced to sign ECHL or European contracts to AHL contracts? Intent would be to develop those players on their ECHL affiliate but pay them AHL income (with the ECHL team paying the AHL team the ECHL salary cap limit). This way the AHL/NHL franchise can recruit the best of the best young prospects, not quite ready for the AHL. Toronto signed 15 AHL contracts this year and played 12 of them mostly on the Solar Bears. What's to prevent signing 20 or more?
This past year there were 5 players who started the year on an AHL contract, and ended up with an NHL contract - that's 2% of AHL contracts signed. To me, it makes sense for a big market team like Toronto or Philly or NY etc. to increase their odds by signing and developing the best available. If you could play these numbers year over year an NHL team could farm a new player for their top 50 contracts almost every year.
