The MB is toxic. I really can't take any more of the, "The Leafs would like some of the better players in the league from your team even though you have no interest in trading them. Here's what they are worth to the Leafs. Let's call it a deal and don't argue with me" threads.
How about this one?
"We want your elite young players but we don't want to give up our elite young players. Any thoughts?"
I think Kase is the heir apparent to Cogliano. Speedy undersized wing who is surprisingly good on the forecheck but has trouble finishing. I think he'd be a good fit on that line (if not this year, next).
I don't really see a Cogliano comparison in Kase. Cogliano plays a complimentary style game in the offensive zone, garnering most of his points by getting to the dirty areas. He uses his superb conditioning, speed, and defensive stick to play a big part in what is one of the most lethal forechecking lines in the NHL, and those things also allow him to be a great PKer. Doesn't have great hands. His shot isn't anything to marvel at and he's no playmaker, either. He gets around this with solid offensive positioning but he doesn't drive play in the offensive zone on his own. As I said, a complimentary player.
There are some similar attributes -- both play feisty and both are speedy, but that's where the comparison ends.
Kase is a playmaker. His most notable assets are his vision and passing ability; he also possesses a good set of wheels as well as solid puckhandling. He, like Cogliano, plays feisty and has no qualms about getting his hands dirty, but unlike Cogliano, he has neither the upper body strength nor the defensive stick to make himself a presence in that regard -- he is as a consequence weak along the boards and on the forecheck and loses too many puck battles for my liking. Still has a lot of filling out to do on his 6 foot frame. His shot needs a lot of work and his offensive positioning could use some refining. A lot of his deficiencies can be fixed by him simply adding strength -- hopefully this is something he works on over the offseason.
If we have a heir apparent to Cogliano in our system, it's Max Jones. He's fast, strong on the forecheck, and is good on the PK, and brings some more offensive upside to the position Cogliano occupies in trade for the level of conditioning and stamina Cogliano has, and I would also consider Cogliano the far superior "glue guy".
