There were a couple of category shifts this time. In the OUA West, Western Ontario trades places with Windsor (in C+ and C categories) and in the AUS, St. Mary's finally drops from A to B.

This was also the end of inter-conference play, at least until the quarter-finals of the U-Cup.

With some shifting happening, I publish again the supplementary charts. First, here are the “AOA” charts, with last week's ranking indicated:

OHT35-180121.avg1.png

OHT35-180121.avg2.png

The “average-of-averages” pretty much summarizes things. One exception is that Calgary leads MRU in the CW rankings by any other measure, but would now fall beneath them in the “AOA” measure. For now, Ryerson and Calgary will stay in B and the group of C+ teams in blue will also stay put. Fortunate that Calgary and MRU face one another in the coming week.

It might just be time to resign ourselves to the fact that no OUA West team is consistent enough to be a B team. For now, Ryerson clings to B just ahead of Calgary.

SMU was hanging onto the A level for a while now. But their numbers clearly fit better with the B level. This gives the AUS a more “normal” skew and reverberates throughout the AUS rankings. They still don't have a C+ team, and I doubt that will change unless UPEI catches fire.

With RMC losing to Army in their annual game, the inter-conference play is now over for another year. Here is the final chart:

And here is the current skew:

No teams changed ranking levels this week, but there is a traffic jam between B and C+ which could easily cause some shifting in the final 2 weekends of the regular season. This week's table adds a column, the “AOA”.

So, about that traffic jam between B and C+. Calgary ranks ahead of MRU and UBC by comparative records within the CW. By the AOA, they also rank behind Carleton, Queen's, and Ryerson. Meanwhile, MRU and UBC rank ahead of York. So that's how the whole lot get ranked. Now, if one domino should fall those teams could all shift about and there could be loads of shifting between B and C+.

At the other end, the only team remaining at C- is Moncton. Strange to see Moncton down so low.

The promoted teams (in green) are McGill and UBC. No teams are in red (for those suffering a fall). The blue “bubble teams” are few in number. Ryerson clings to the B level, and Lethbridge could easily fall to C level either as a one-way shift, or perhaps to be replaced by Toronto or Windsor.

With McGill and UBC moving up, the “AOA” numbers are skewed for many teams, owing to small sample sizes in some segments. So in four segments of the rankings (in purple) there was a departure from the AOA rankings. In those cases teams were better ranked using simple comparative records and strength-of-schedule within their division. In the CW, Sask stays in A and Manitoba in B with a slightly better AOA. In the B rankings, Concordia slips in between Queen's and Carleton. In C+ Ottawa slips behind UQTR in the OUA East while in the OUA West Brock slips down and UWO slips up in between Guelph and Laurier in a 4-team virtual dead heat.

In a final note, UPEI and Dalhousie have been showing an ability to beat the good teams in the AUS. Maybe one of them could fill that empty C+ part of the AUS rankings.

THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 35 #15
to Feb 10/18 (end of regular season)

Being the final ranking of the regular season, it was necessary to re-evaluate a lot of results and move teams to their final resting place. Two teams went up a level, and four moved down. The race for 1st was as close as possible. And most teams wound up being ranked as called for by the average of averages (“AOA”) ranking.

Lethbridge tumbled from C+ to C and this change had reverberations throughout the CW, and caused UBC to tumble from B to C+. Also dropping from B to C+ were Ryerson and Queen's. Those dropping teams are in red. The promoted teams (in green) are Ottawa and UPEI.

There are a few notable exceptions to the AOA rankings. Concordia, Carleton, and Ottawa get knocked down a bit in the OUA East. Guelph makes a major jump and Brock takes a tumble in the OUA west. The AUS and CW, with balanced schedules, generally get a reasonable internal ranking by the AOA calculation.
