TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have entered into a one-year affiliation agreement with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL today, the team announced. Kalamazoo will serve as the Lightning’s primary ECHL affiliate starting with the 2016-17 season. "We are very happy to welcome the Kalamazoo Wings to the Lightning organization today,” Lightning assistant general manager Julien BriseBois said. “The Wings have maintained a strong commitment to success and we are proud to partner with them. We look forward to furthering the development of our prospects in the ECHL while helping the K-Wings win the Kelly Cup next season.”

Established in 1974, the Kalamazoo Wings hockey club, also known as the "K-Wings", have established a strong winning culture at the 5,113-seat Wings Event Center while playing in the IHL, UHL and ECHL. Two-time winners of the Turner Cup (IHL) and the 2006 Champions of the Colonial Cup (UHL), the K-Wings are currently members of the ECHL's North Division and have won four divisional titles since 2010. Since joining the ECHL in 2009, Kalamazoo has produced 11 players who have appeared in the NHL, including four who made their debuts during the 2015-16 season.

Tampa Bay previously had secondary affiliations with Florida (Estero), Augusta (Georgia), Mississippi (Biloxi), Pensacola (Florida), Johnstown (Pennsylvania), Toledo (Ohio), Chesapeake (Virginia), Nashville (Tennessee) and Knoxville (Tennessee) of the ECHL. The Lightning’s top minor league affiliate remains the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.

Great news - was wondering where all our draft picks were going to play. Its a one year deal - probably both organizations feeling each other out before longer term commitment.

How far is Kalamazoo from Syracuse? Seems like a quick little plane ride to shuttle players back and forth easily.

It's hard to do a roster projection this early but who do you expect to not make the Crunch and be in Kalamazoo next year?
I got Ikonen-Darcy-Hart
Dotchin or Thomas whoever loses that battle.

This should be good for the Lightning. Their guys got squeezed for minutes having to compete for spots with the Rangers guys in Greenville.

Its an 8 to 9 hour drive. Detroit and Chicago both have daily flights into Syracuse 1.5 hours plus another hour at the airport plus drive time 2.5 hours to both Detroit or Chicago from Kalamazoo. So you are looking at:

8 or 9 hours Drive or 5 hours flight for about $200 one-way tix. Other ECHL franchises without affiliation are Alaska, Colorado, and Wichita - so this is probably best out of the remaining cities. Maybe there is some affiliate re-shuffling next year and some other more attractive affiliations ending with current teams - maybe that's why one year deal.

With regards to roster sec let me look at spreadsheet.

Too hard to predict at the moment with all the unsigned AHL level UFAs and RFAs. My best prediction starts with Stamkos and Marchessault walking as UFAs. Carle gets traded or bought out. Koekkoek grabs Carle's spot - Nesterov gets #7D duties. So two roster spots open. Blunden gets 13th Forward - everyone else needing contracts gets re-signed (killorn/brown/vladdy/paquette/kuch). We go 13F/7D/2G - one open roster spot @ NHL level.

Killorn / Johnson / Kuch
Killorn / Vladdy / Drouin
Brown / Filp / Cally
Paq / Boyle / Condra
Blunden

Heddy/Strals
Garry/Sustr
Koekkoek/Coburn
Nesterov

Bish/Vasi

Masin takes Koekkoek's roster spot down in the A. Point takes Marchessaults' spot in the A. Now we have 3 UFAs - Tambellini, McGinn, and Angelidis all re-signed. Paradis, Broll, Gourde are all RFAs all come back and we add Tammela to roster as well as a 19 year old as he got a contract to come over as he already played against grown men. We need a leader on Defense and Witko comes back plus Taormina who performed very well both as UFAs this summer. Roster looks like:

McGinn / Richard / Gourde
Tambellini / Peca / Erne
Paradis/ Point / Vermin
Broll / Angelidis / Tammela

Taormina / Blujus
Masin / DeAngelo
Walcott / Witko

Wilcox / Gudlevskis

Under contract on the bubble - Dotchin, Hart, Ikonen. Prospecst needing contract and a place to play - Imama, Digiacinto. Next year Stephens, Yan, Cirelli, Joseph, and Matt Spencer need a place to play.

A lot of balls still up in the air. Lots of decisions to be made. And we still have 9 draft picks in this Summer's draft.
