So that's why Harrington is still around. Okay then.

Still think they'll try to trade a forward, but they'll have more time now.

Plus we could always trade Robidas + a forward for Raymond? That's not that bad of an idea. Even if Raymond doesn't get to play all that much this year, he has another year so we can just give him ice time then and move him next year.

According to James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still reluctant to send Stephane Robidas to the minors. Toronto has effectively converted the Marlies into a youth-only group, with hardly anyone on the roster over 25 years old, never mind 38. The organization wants the AHL team to be a development factory, with young players getting the bulk of the ice time and experience. Robidas would take away from that if he were given a regular spot on the blueline.

The Toronto Maple Leafs can place Robidas on injured reserve long enough for rookie Scott Harrington to get a look in his first games since arriving via the Phil Kessel trade with Pittsburgh. The Leafs can also explore the possibility of moving Robidas, perhaps by retaining half of his salary.

Under the NHL’s previous collective bargaining agreement, NHL general managers facing huge contractual blunders could effectively hide them in the minors. Wade Redden, Sheldon Souray and Jeff Finger all had their deals wiped from the cap in that fashion.

Under the new agreement adopted in 2012, the cap savings for demoting someone like MacDonald are a max of $950,000, meaning the Flyers will have almost 6 per cent of their cap dedicated to thin air.

What makes Robidas different is the Leafs are still reluctant to send him to the minors.

So this opportune injury will now allow the Leafs some time to sort through their options. Robidas can be placed on injured reserve long enough for rookie Scott Harrington to get a look in his first games since arriving via the Phil Kessel trade with Pittsburgh. The Leafs can also explore the possibility of moving Robidas, perhaps by retaining half of his salary. Even then, they’re likely in tough to find a taker. The NHL as a whole is getting younger and faster, with players right out of junior on cheap entry-level deals offered more of a chance than ever. Combine that with a salary cap that has been stalled by the sinking Canadian dollar, and there’s immense pressure on salaries for veterans. That’s why there have been so many on camp tryouts and – when they’re lucky – signing bargain basement contracts, such as the $700,000, two-way deal Scottie Upshall landed with the Blues on Monday.

no hint of injury was ever suggested by robidas or the team at any point. Yet when the leafs announced those roster cuts robidas was said to be injured.

According to leafs general manager lou lamoriello, robidas strained his knee on the morning of the team's final exhibition game – oct. 3 – which led to a subsequent groin injury. It was the same knee that robidas broke previously.

"we had a pretty good skate," lamoriello said, "and that's when it acted up.

"he had a pretty extensive injury, rehabbed it quite a bit, and when that happens, in that injury, you can put strain on the groin from just the way you do things. And it moves up into that area."

pat brisson, the agent for robidas, said last week that his client was in "a lot of pain" during camp, adding that such pain became "unbearable".

Lamoriello, though, suggested there were no issues or concerns previously with regard to the knee or groin. "no, weren't worried about that, no," he said.

The timing of his injury is somewhat fortuitous for both club and player, though his situation and future with the leafs remains murky.

A long-time dallas star, robidas struggled in his first year with the club and appeared in real jeopardy of not making the team this fall. Add in a contract that still carries two more years (including this one) as well as a cap hit of $3 million, and his nhl future appeared to be in doubt.

The leafs looked to be in a difficult spot. The club would have been forced to either keep robidas on the roster or waive him and assign him to the marlies, neither option being ideal.

Permanently on the LTIR, but his probably healthy as a rock. Woah how much cap space will the leafs command next season. Nearly 2/3rds of their roster will likely be gone.

Yep lets get our pitchforks and torches out and go after Shanny.

Why is this fanbase always seemingly obsessed with trying to point a figure at someone and blaming them?

I see what the media are doing regarding Robidas. They're stoking the fires of a cap circumvention accusation. Why should any of them care? Only the Leafs' competition should care about this.

1. write story about how the Leafs are circumventing the cap
-NHL investigates
2. write story about how NHL is investigating Leafs
-NHL makes decision on validity of the move
3. write story about NHL's decision

The media is basically hoping that this story will lead to 2 additional stories, which are pretty much the same as the initial story. Basically, they're doing some original work now, in hopes that they won't have to do any original work for a little while afterwards. Also, your point only holds if the media actually supports the team they write about.

So Leafs pick up $3M of cap space this year which they can use in trade negotiations.

3 more questions:1. what happens next season and following season with LTIR if he recovers from his injury this year? 2. Does this have to be a medical doctor who gives this clearance in LTIR? 3. how much cap space do Leafs have now in 2015? Thanks

1. Next season the same thing happens, The following season he is an UFA. If he recovers he comes off I.R. and his $3,000,000 is added back onto the cap.
2. Yes
3. $9,300,835 with the 3 players on I.R. ( Granberg, Robidas and Horton )

Sensationalism. Nothing happening on the pitbull front lately, Rob Ford no longer the mayor and no shark, alligator or killer bee attacks in Southern Ontario so how else to sell newspapers?

With all the injury problems he has had, when he was with the Stars, I'm not as sure as everyone else, that this is not the truth.

Doesn't he have to pass medical tests, to qualify for insurance and to be put on the LTIR?

Horton had to pass a medical to be put on the LTIR for sure.
