If were to sign one of Penner/Hayes ($925 k) + one of Carcillo/Carter (~$650 k) and let Miller, Lombardi & Lindberg battle it out for the 3 C spot (or 4 C and D Moore moves up) we would get a cap compliant team with better depth, grit & size than moving up all the kids. We would get some usable assets further down the road as well.
50 SPCs
One callup still possible from Hartford too capwise

Rangers have probably 4 of the best 5 undrafted players in the league right now. Just noticed that.

If Brodie can't be traded for then, what would a good package be for Staal that returns us a replacement and a prospect?

I should add that I mean for an extended Staal rather than as a rental

I'm not sure Who or what team.. but what about some kind of trade for Staal + a forward for a better replacement forward and a defenseman that's not as great as Staal, but able to play 2nd line minutes.

something like Staal/Hagelin for ?/?.. Wonder what kind of deal we could do then.. not that I want to trade Hagelin, but spit ballin here, I think he will still be pretty cheap next year.

Im sure teams are chomping at the bit to trade a Staal replacement + a prospect for 1 year of Staal.

Perhaps Sather could work collaboratively with Staal to get him traded to a team he would sign an extension with and give them a 72 hour period to work on an extension.

Getting Staal for many years should increase the package we get in return and help the team getting Staal cope better with losing what they are giving us.

Who knows. I'm much more reserved about trading Staal now, especially since Stralman is gone.

Boyle leaves a lot to be desired on the defensive end.

Hagelin will be arbitration eligible and a long-term contract will include group 3 years. He is one year away from group 3. He will get a raise. Stepan will get a raise. He will be two years away from group 3.

I'm hoping the Rangers sign a couple more NHL forwards to cheap deals.

Players I would key in on:

Penner
Carter
Carcillo
Leino
Tootoo
Galiardi

What happens if Glass goes down with an injury? Do the Rangers then have to go out and trade for another Carcillo? Why? Just sign Carcillo or Tootoo and you have free insurance. Grab guy like Leino or Galiardi and let them bounce between the AHL/NHL. Depth.

I wanted to get Winnik on that 1 year deal. Winnik @ 1.3 is a great steal. Would have been a great Boyle replacement... and still cheaper than Glass.

I would have rather had Winnik as well but the main point is, outside of Glass who can drop the gloves? Those guys get hurt. Dorsett got hurt last year. Prust was hurt. Boogaard got hurt. Brashear got hurt. Orr was hurt at times.

My whole point is, why not sign someone who could be the 13th or 14th forward with a minimal NHL contract ($550k) like Carcillo or Tootoo who could come in and fill in for Glass or give him some competition for that spot? Play them both if you think a game may get out of control (which there will be some).

I doubt it happens. What will most likely happen is the Rangers will wait until he gets hurt and then have to trade another 7th rounder for a half of a year of a Carcillo-like player.

I'm not asking for a goon. No point. I am asking for someone who can be good insurance/depth so that they can keep their picks.

Who in Hartford could replace Glass in the ability to drop their gloves at forward? I don't see anyone.

Kantor, if need be, I guess.

There are also cheap deals to be had. Conditional 7th for Carcillo. I'm sure there will be plenty of guys available this year that fit that bill. I'm not worried about that position.

At this point, I'd love to allow our prospects the chance to win spots out of camp.

Kantor didn't have a point in the AHL last year. I like him as a possibility down the road but not now. Why give that pick up though? There are guys who can fill the role for cheap who you can most likely stash in the minors if need be.

I would rather have a guy like Carcillo and not need him and who knows, maybe another team trades a conditional 7th TO the Rangers as opposed to them giving one up for a change.

Penner-not a bad option, brings size and chip in 15 goals, but laziness and character are an issue
Carter- would be a good 4th line option, but hes a former devil: ugh
Carcillo- would love carcillo back, dont know why sather doesnt just re-sign him
Leino- Hell no, this guy absolutely sucks
Tootoo- hell no again, guy sucks, also has character issues
Galiardi- would be a good pickup on 4th line

they probably sign someone or invite one to camp, Meuller is better in the AHL so they could use a cheap spare. Ideally Carcillo at 700K

that is 49 contracts though, they wont go to 50 so no Hayes

Zuccarello Awesome*

It'd be pretty awesome if Duclair somehow forces his way onto the team and forces AV to find a spot for him.

Perhaps Stempniak gets bumped to the fourth line.

Kreider Stepan St. Louis
Nash Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Miller Duclair
Glass Moore Stempniak

would be pretty sick.

what happens to Skejl if Staal is signed long term?.. sure he might take Moore's spot on the 3rd pairing, but isn't he much better than a 3rd pairing LHD?.. Yeah I know, he might never be as good as Staal, I'm just making conversation.. what would happen with him then?

There will always be room for kids who prove they can earn the spot. I suspect if Staal is re-signed, he won't have a NMC on top of it.
Everything below here is a joke
But in reality, we really just need to move McD to the right-side. He owned it in the Olympics.

2016-2017 NYR Defense.

Staal - McD
Skjei - Girardi
Allen - McIlrath

I did forget that Mcdonagh tore it up on the right side in Sochi, but that's a bigger ice, will it be the same success in the NHL? I'd rather not have to find out.
