We seem to go for Americans with intriguing skillsets that lack hockey sense or footspeed or size. Hopefully we see more Nygren type picks for guys who put it all together later that most. At worst you get a good AHL player for a late round pick instead of our usual not even a contract offer. We haven't struck gold even once in two decades going for a 17 year old with obvious flaws we hope we can fix. Craig Conroy being one of the only successful guys we got from this tactic and even he was 18/19 twenty four years ago. Sean Hill too, drafted in 1988. Seems like this tactic isn't working so great anymore if those are the names that get brought up.

Yep, the type of pick we love to have, as you take a guy who is at maybe the start of the development, and which you will take the whole 4 years to see if he'll ever be ready to jump to the next level. But if true, I wonder why Evans compared to a guy like Robert Carpenter. Of course, they have their reason. But if you want to try to hit the homerun, go with a good player with nice bloodlines. Carpenter is seen as a Mr. Do-it-All that needs time to perfect all of his skills. And is going to a great school next year in Boston University. In this draft year, didn't play a whole lot of games in the USHS but ended up with almost as many goals as games they played, though obviously a really weak league. But then had 9 games series at the end of the USHL year and finished with 9 points in 9 games. And he's really young as he was 1 month shy from being drafted in 2015. I think that's a nice profile for a 7th rounder as well.

Obviously the Habs don't seem to be that into the whole Euro homerun swing late round as a Detroit/Toronto but I think their lack of success is more due to preference. A lot of the late round steals from round 7 are Euros/Euro leaguers.

2011 - Ondrej Palat
2010 - Frederik Andersen
2009 - Erik Haula
2008 - Anders Lindback
2007 - Carl Gunnarsson

You conviniently forgot a few players to prove your point. Jason Demers being the most noteworthy, but the list also includes Braun, Condra, Dorsett, Nolan and Bartkowsky. And the good late 6th round picks were mostly North Americans too.

And btw Palat and Haula were both playing in NA the year they were drafted.

Demers was entering the draft for the third time. He wasn't a project, he was an overager.
